More on the Penner trade

In addition to defenseman Colten Teubert and the Kings’ 2011 first-round pick, the Kings’ 2012 third-round pick is also in play as part of the trade with Edmonton, but that will depend on the Kings’ ability to make, and advance in, the playoffs this season. In exchange, the Kings get Dustin Penner, a 28-year-old winger who has 21 goals and 18 assists in 62 games this season and is a four-time 20-goal scorer, with a high of 32 goals last season. Penner is under contract for next season as well, with a salary-cap hit of $4.25 million.

Going back the other way is Teubert, who has been a bit of a lightning rod since the Kings took him with the No. 13 overall pick in 2008. After a rough stretch, that included an ECHL assignment, Teubert seemed to be figuring out things at the AHL level this season and had two goals and eight assists in 39 games. His size — he’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 195 pounds — and physical play is his calling card, but clearly the Kings had enough defensive prospects in order to make a move. I’m heading back to El Segundo, so there will be some comment from Dean Lombardi shortly after the deadline, and we’ll see when Penner might be able to make it to Los Angeles…
