The Kings have acquired Dustin Penner from Edmonton for two draft picks and defenseman Colten Teubert. Details to come…

@mrhapa, That’s not a steep price at all. The Kings don’t need any more picks. They need players. Teubert was one of a lot of defensemen the Kings had waiting in the wings. I’d say its the perfect deal. The Kings dealt what they had a dearth of and got what they needed. Its a good, even hockey deal. Especially if Penner produces, he’s only 28.

Capt Jam Reply:

@Brent, I think with his size and strength Teubert, if he fills his potential, is going to be one of those beast NHL defenseman that can move anyone out of the crease ala Rod Langway. IMO, Teubert basically lost a year of development when he tried to fight his way onto the NHL roster (Lombardi reportedly told him “we didn’t draft you 13th overall to be a goon.”) and probably lost another 1/2 year with broken hand bones. I’d also not totally hold either against the kid…
Interesting that Edmonton chose Teubert over other seemingly more NHL ready players like Muzzin and Voynov. Or maybe “chose” is not the right word because surely I do not know who was offered. Curious though. Solid LW for prospects. Good deal for the Kings I’d say.

TSN says the Kings overpaid. Maybe so, but that draft pick might turn into a 20th-25th overall pick. And Teubert may not develop into anything substantial. Anyway, you gotta pay the price at the deadline and I think we did pretty well holding on to our more valuable assets.

At the reception, guests danced to songs spun by DJ Yo-C.
Welch was previously married to NHL player Richard Zednik.

Teubert became expendable with the emergence of AMart and Voynov. Also the drafting of Forbort last year hurt his stock a bit so its basically a mid round 1st rounder and hopefully a late 2nd rounder next year. Good trade for both sides, a hockey trade.

I love Dean Lombardi, I love Dustin Penner, and I love Rich Hammond.

Seriously – this is about as good of a trade for both sides as could be. Kings get their Top 6 winger, and don’t lose anyone off the roster or “untouchable” prospects. Edmonton gets another 1st rounder and a really good D prospect. This is why you stockpile assets. Well done, Deano!

Two 1st rounders (Tuebert was a 1st) + a conditional for Penner. Maybe a slight overpayment. I would have liked to keep Tuebert & traded Voynov instead. Not that I don’t like Voynov – I do. But I don’t see any space for him on the Kings. We already have 3 offensive d (Doughty, JJ, AM). I think Tuebert would have a better chance filling a need on the Kings.

great deal, Tuebert wasn’t in the Kings plans (just not nhl caliber) and we already have enough prospects. It won’t hurt us at all to give up a #1 pick for a year
[Reply]
I’m not THRILLED with Penner, BUT:
1. He should help the PP.
2. He is at a position of dire need as a LW.
3. The price is indeed high, HOWEVER, when you look at it, it wasn’t as high as you think. 1st round pick sucks, but Tuebert simply was not panning out. He may eventually, but as of now, he is not.
I’ve been saying for quite some time, if you want someone, you must pay for someone. Lombardi paid. In reality, he probably paid a bit too much, but, with all of the prospects within the system, and yes, the Kings ARE loaded, this was a deal he could swing and still be just fine. It’s now up to the scouts to be on their game this year and make sure to find some gems in the later rounds. They will take time to develop, but this is how the top organizations have done it for years.
If the Kings go deep in the playoffs, the conditional third turns into a 2nd, and I have no problem with that, so long as it comes with a cup.
[Reply]

I don’t think so. But sure, if he fails to score and has a hard time adapting to the Kings system, then yeah maybe it’s overpayed.

If this team goes deep, I intend to be there for at least some of it. I was lucky enough to see Game 5 against Vancouver in ’93, and I’ll be in the stands at least once again if the kings make a run.
I like it and here’s why…
If the Kings were going to sacrifice a prospect, I’d have wanted it to be Teubert or Hickey. Never have been totally sold on those guys. Plus we’re stacked on D for years to come. So well done there.
Then, if you’re ever going to sacrifice a 1st rounder, do it in a year where you’re good and the pick is low AND in a year where there’s a weak draft. Done and done.
Good job Dean.

@Bickleton Wigglesworth III,
No move makes all of ANY team’s worries go away. Look at the Canucks. They’re so hysterical to patch up holes in their squad they’re dealing in their sleep.
Dustin Penner may not win us any Cups — and I agree that he has some of Fro’s erratic behavior — but if you can add that much beef to a team that’s already feared around the league for its size, do it without costing yourself a roster player, get him for another year at a set price and not as a rental, and only give up assets that you’re already soaking in, I’d call that a GOOD deal.
My only fear is how well Penner works in the locker-room.
Can’t say I’m surprised it was Penner, but coming down so close to the wire, I’m a little surprised it actually happened. I would have been pretty bummed if they’d made non deal after pushing Sturm out the door. Let’s hope this works as planned.

There was almost no urgency to make a move, even after the injury to Lokti and the loss of Sturm, and he got a terrific value for what was given… the team NEEDED this jolt, showing that the Kings are buyers is good for the fan base and it a sign that the organization is ready to step up to the next level.

@pucktime,
Fantastic. Every single one of those lines is COMPLETE and has lots of potential to be dominant.
Although we might’ve overpaid, it’s time to tap the revolver. We’ve only overpaid if he’s a bust. This team is on the cusp, and our stock is rising radpily. If this works the way we want it to, it’ll be absolutely spectacular.

@UglyinLA, not sure how they feel about Westy now, but management used to think of Westy as Richardson with fighting skills, so yeah, they’ll trade off. Last I heard, Westgarth is still expected to put up 25 points a year at some point. Hopefully he gets his skill level up before Clifford becomes too valuable on the ice to have in the box.

@wavesinair, I agree. Teubert has had serious attitude issues, not to mention a healthy scrath on various occasions. Years before this guy ever sees the light of day in the NHL. A very low 1st and a conditional ’12 pick. That’s a great deal for LA.
Another big body up front for this club. This team is going to be even tougher to play against.

hopefully TM won’t move him to other line when he can’t score in the first game. Stick him with Kopi please.

i am sooooo happy with this trade, CT if he even makes the NHL will prob be 5-6 Dman at best. so we Got Penner for a first and second rounder.Plus we get to keep Simmer. this was a great move by Deano.
[Reply]
HOLY BITCHIN TRADE BATMAN! Nice work Deano! Keep the core intact, use the cards to get the quality SCORER with size to boot. Pener can be hot and cold, but the reason why I like this deal:
1. We made a deal for SCORING.
2. Penner WANTS to be in SoCal.
3. Affordable contract with only one year to deal with incase it does not go well, essentialy Penner starts his contract year TODAY.
4. Size and hands up front with Kopi.
5. NO CORE GUYS GIVEN UP! You stack cards for a reason. DL stuck to his word and delivered.
Kudos to DL and his entire staff for this move. It was big in a lot of ways, for the fans as well. I hope we can get him in tonight.
It’s a GREAT day for Kings fans…

Ok. I am Lombardi’s biggest critic, but this was a great move.
Not that they didn’t pay the price, but they didn’t give away any core, or Schenn. Forbert will be a nice stay at home defensement, a pick is a pick, and whatever the conditioanl is..big deal.
Not to mention Penner is a natural Left wing.

Not a bad deal, Deano got the true left winger he needed. Gave up a 1st, which they had to use to get anyone good without giving up a roster player, a 2nd in 2 years and Teubert (who is isn’t the Kings top D prospect) Kings added a 20+ goal scorer for playoff = good deal!!!

@puddle, Where do you put him?
You can’t have two rookie centers if you want to contend for the Cup. You need to keep Stoll or Zeus and since Zeus contract ends after this season and Stoll (solid 3rd line checking center with more offensive upside than Zeus) has one more year left, makes sense to free up Zeus and his $$$ towards extending Penner and DD.

sid the kid Reply:

@Barry’s Mullet, your logic makes good sense to me
Both TSN and Yahoo are summarizing the deal as the Kings “paid a big price” and that Edmonton got the better end of the deal. It takes 2 teams to trade and as much as the Oilers got younger and invested in their future, the Kings got offense got bolstered and invested in the now. (Penner is in his early 30′s with a lot more hockey to play) So they both made. That being said, don’t know if I would have given up the #1 pick but that would but a memory if the Kings go deep in the playoffs…

Newf Reply:

@SaveByCechmanek, Penner is only 28. and ths TSN i’m watching are saying that LA has the better of the deal as Teubert might not even be an NHL defenseman, and the 1st round pick will be in the 20-25 range, and the other pick is a 3rd taht can only improve to a 2nd. so i don’t see how they got the better end of the deal. lol

3 picks is very good for Penner. How much did Oilers have to give the Ducks when they signed him? On top of that they paid him a ton. We have him for 1 year plus and he has to show what he´s got or else we can either trade him or just let him walk. Good trade.

This is the good news that we didn’t get in the summer! This deal is exactly what this team needed right now. I’m not a huge Penner fan, but he makes them better on the #1 line and the PP. Those weaknesses are now addressed. You would think that coming back to SoCal will be a big motivating factor for him. There are no powerhouse teams in either conference, and with the D, PK, and outstanding goaltending the Kings have, if they can now stay healthy, name me any better team in the conference? Does anyone think that DL waited to pull the trigger so no other West team would have time to do anything? Just wondering….
