All was normal at practice today, with only one change, one that actually took place during yesterday’s game. Alexei Ponikarovsky skates on the third line, with Michal Handzus and Justin Williams, while Trevor Lewis centers Kyle Clifford and Kevin Westgarth. Terry Murray had solid praise for Ponikarovsky’s recent effort. Jonathan Quick will start in goal tomorrow night against Detroit. More notes and quotes to come…

When everything is on the line, suddenly there’s no room for an enforcer.
And yet when I express the opinion that fighting has no place in Hockey, I get a 5000 word lecture that without (insert your team’s enforcer here) the cheap shots would be intolerable, and I do not understand the finer points of the game.
I just don’t get it…..

@HockeyNerd, It’s just an arms race and the coaches looking out for their players. When the other team dresses a large fighter who looks for fights, you either dress one of your own or watch one of your players get beat up by someone 4-5 inches taller and 30-50lbs of muscle heavier. Just like when one country builds up its military….
Anyone remember Warren Rychal? That guy has some serious guts but–back in the day he was the Kings “enforcer” at maybe 180-190 lbs– I used to dread it when he took one for the team by fighting some huge dude. He had some serious guts because he repeatedly fought (and lost sometimes badly) against guys who were mean and way bigger then him. And Rychal kept at it, showing courage. At Robaitaille’s on ice party, Rychal was one of the guys Luke/the King’s brought back to honor. I’m sure Rychal’s teammates appreciated his efforts; I hope Rychal got well paid because he paid in blood for whatever it was. That year the Kings needed some guy like Westgarth or Ivanans.
Hopefully TM dresses some better skilled player against Detroit. They play without an enforcer and do just fine. Clifford can handle any scraps, if the RW’s are dumb enough to start one.

Poni has been playing a real strong game of late….hopefully he can chip in with a few goals down the line but I love the way he is hitting and love his defensive play!
Regarding trade rumors….do we really need to make a move? We have a top 3 defense in the league! Our problem is the PP which if turns around will net us another .5 goals per game. It has under performed all year and is the most predictable PP in the league. We have 2 solid PP units with the personnel in place. We don’t need to over pay for Hemsky, Penner or Richards. All of which would cost us the likes of Schenn or Simmonds or Clifford or, god forbid, all of them. I might be in a very small minority that thinks we should stand pat unless we can get a Kovalev type player for the same price the Penguins did.

@seems a good fellow, We don’t NEED to make a move (1 regulation loss in the last 15 after all) but if we can add a forward or 2 that actually CAN score goals at the cost of a couple of prospects (NOT Schenn) it would help a lot.
The problem with the PP is NOT entirely the coaching. It BADLY needs someone who can make creative plays or has a strong, accurate shot or both.
BTW DL probably didn’t pick up Kovalev because the guy never skates inside his own blue line….

With JQ in Goal, the defensemen that we have and EVERY forward backchecking on any given night (or yes, series) there is a fairly decent chance we will give up fewer goals than our pathetic offense scores.

@seems a good fellow, they need a goal scorer going into the playoffs if they are to have an opportunity to advance. Should they overpay? No! But I don’t thing Simmonds for a proven scorer is overpaying. I like Wayne but there is just a pervailing overlike for him by some on this blog. I understand his hustle, fan type favorite player thing, but I want this “team” to have its best chance to compete for a Cup, this yearn and years to follow. I would not trade Clifford unless it was in a huge package, which I don’t think is going to happen, but yes, I could see Simmonds going for a proven scorer and again, I would be ok with that. I like this teams chemistry and if they could add a goal scorer without giving up a roster player or a top 5 team prospect then great! But that’s probably not going to happen, so Simmonds makes the most sense to go. Sorry just my opinion.

HockeyNerd Reply:

@Shotongoal, I agree. Simmonds has a lot of upside, but he is just forward #10 who backchecks a lot and doesn’t belong on a second line, let alone a first.
For a Penner, that seems to be a reasonable price.
Unfortunately, Edmonton and apparently every other team is not offering a reasonable price….
[Reply]
Seems A Good Fellow Reply:
February 27th, 2011 at 2:34 pm
@Shotongoal,
I’m not saying this team couldn’t use the help on the goal scoring front. And out of the 3 players I mentioned, which I figure are the 3 players that are on Edmonton and Dallas’ radar, I would feel the most comfortable trading Simmonds. But Simmonds alone will not get us Hemsky or Penner. And if the asking price from the Rangers for Richards is what I hear (I’ll try and find the link), Dubinsky, Marc Staal and D. Stepan, we’d have to anti up the likes of Schenn, Simmonds/Clifford and maybe a JJ. Obviously there is no way in Hell we do that deal.
To me Booth makes the most sense if we can get him for our 1st rounder and a lesser prospect.
But for anyone to say we cannot win The Cup this year, with this team we have RIGHT NOW, is insane. Against the best team in each division (San Jose, Vancouver, Detroit, Philly, Boston and Washington/Tampa), we are 11-3! This team can beat anyone, home or away, in a 7 game series with the defense alone.

@Seems A Good Fellow, I’m sorry but the regular season is not the playoffs and its my belief that the Kings can beat any team in the regular season, they have, but in the playoffs, I don’t think so. This team right now is no better than last years team. Yes, Quick will probably be stronger going into these playoffs, but they are no deeper, not more talented, only a year more experienced. Listen, I really like this team. Not many teams can match their D, goasltending and PK. But come playoff time they are going to be exposed without more scoring help, both 5 on 5 and obviously on the PP.
I would be more than happy if they grabbed a Hejduk, Elias, even Zherdev if it only costs them a late round pick or a lower type prospect, but I don’t know if that will happen. And I DO NOT want them to mortgage the present or the future unless its for Parise or Nash, or any other superstar. And no, I don’t think that’s going to happen either.

[Reply]
How about Van Reimsdyk.
Just saw he was sent down.
Young, big, left wing.
We have too many centers and too many D.
You just can’t play them all.
I’d much rather see us get a young guy with future potential than a cog that will be short term.
As we saw with Halpern and Modin, these guys seemed to add depth, but didn’t add much and were gone in the summer.
We don’t fit well with any of the names so far mentioned – Hemsky, Richards, Penner – except maybe Booth, but his brain has been rattled and I really don’t have too much familiarity with him.
Van R, or Kulemin would seem to me to be better fits here with the leadership we have.
What would they fetch their teams in return? I don’t know, but Voynov, Hickey, Jones, Moller, and even Lokti are maybe never going to fit as long as TM is here.
Unfortunately for us, our defensive system lowers our players numbers and that hurts their trade value – guys like Richardson, Poni, Lewis, and Simmonds would probably have bigger numbers in a different system. Also, Harrold.
Harrold would be more attractive in trade talks if he were ever played consistently. He’d have the potential to fetch a significant rental because offensive defensemen are hard to come by in this era.
One further idea. Would trading Schenn for a guy like Brent Burns be a horrible idea?
We have a lot of redundancy at center and acquiring a Burns would make our Blue-Line probably the best in the NHL for ages to come. Burns would also help our Kompon-impaired PP.

@Scot, yeah but there was no clear view of the puck actually over the line. And this points to a larger problem with replay. Replay has it’s hands tied by the amount or lack thereof of video evidence. This is where the NHL seems like a 2nd rate league in that the replay is not fair and equal in every single game. There is only one TV crew covering this game today so the NHL has only a few angles to see the play. Yet when the Kings play Detroit tomorrow there will be an over abundance of cameras and therefore more angles to review replays. How can this be fair ? I think the NHL needs to mandate that there are an equal and fair amount of cameras to review plays in every and all situations not just the games that are highly televised.
