A power-play goal gave the Kings a 3-0 lead with 1.1 seconds remaining in the second period. After a battle behind the Colorado net, Anze Kopitar pushed the puck up to the blue line, and Drew Doughty’s shot got through traffic. Elliott made the stop, but the puck trickled behind him and over the line. Ryan Smyth also got an assist, the 400th of his NHL career.
Through two periods, the Kings are outshooting the Avalanche 30-10.
Way to go Smittie!

That was pretty stupid of Colorado to only take one penalty. Opposing teams should automatically commit another penalty to get us on our impotent 5-on-3.

@BringBackTheShieldJersey, Kinda like the old basketball days of Hack-a-Shaq knowing he can’t make freethrows. Yeah, I’ve been hard on the Kings powerplay, with good reason, I think…but hey, way to get one, boys!

@BringBackTheShieldJersey, I think the league should allow 5 on 2′s just to see if the Kings could score on those!

Remaining in 2nd period there Rich. Finially pp goal.

All of a sudden… Doughty with 10 goals. After his super-slow-mo start to the year, is there an outside chance he can match his career high of 16 this year?? 6 goals with 20 games left… sounds doable.

@xeropoint, great to see, he’s the biggest key to how far we go, just his added threat to score opens it up for everyone on the ice. KEEP IT GOING DD!!

Psst.
Still perfect when leading after two.

what has Clifford done to be moved to the 4th line. Com’on TM what are you watching, this kid gives it every night.
Clifford made the 2nd goal happen, why, he moved his feet again and kept it low,…..
Clifford has got a big wing span when he is protecting the puck for sure….

@neil, easy Neil….he’s better then Poni by far, the only difference between them is Poni’s contract the embarassment with what he makes, Kings should be ashamed to get him, a Leaf choke…

Weird but Jim’s comment about the Kings needing to score a PP goal after already being up 2-0 was correct. The sheer number of missed PP chances including two significant chunks of time on a 5 on 3 could have quickly changed momentum if the Avs would have scored the next goal.

@SHUCHUCK, I thought he started making a commitment to skating a few games before.

Are the Kings being coached to stand still on power plays? All year long they’ve had aboslutely NO movement on the PP, and the shots come from the same places over and over. It is that difficult of a concept to get the 3 guys in the umbrella moving in unison? I guarantee this would generate some more exiting scoring chances…

HappyLappy Reply:

@DY, Yes, you see in practice Kompon puts cones on the ice, they represent the offense, our pp unit then stands next to the cones so they can pass to the cones next to the cones. It’s a very complicated system.

@DY, Yeah, the whole point of the umbrella is to spread the PK out, isolate one player in a 2 on 1, then attack the seam you create. Can’t execute without some dynamic movement. We’re basically conceding that we don’t have enough skill to do it, and have to rely totally on point shots and tips / rebounds. Sure, that can be effective, but everything is more effective with variety, when you force the opponent to defend more space and different types of attack.

@jess, I feel u man, it’s getting the 2 pts. first, the ….out second.
Failed twice in 5-on-3 PP is unacceptable. Too predictable, too stationary. No team has been successful in the playoffs if they couldn’t take advantage on it. Enough is enough. It’s time to make a change. The lamest power play in the league. That’s what I’m seeing.

@goldielocks, Goldie, falling on deaf ears I’m afraid. We have no need to acquire a a 1st LW nor improve our PPP. As long as we can keep squeeking out those 1-0 and 2-1 games when our Dmen show up, we are golden.

Is Sturm starting for Washington tonight? No one’s made that clear. I just want to turn on the game and see him scoring in another uniform. I’m sure these past two days have been hard on him. DL probably assured him no one was gonna pick him up and he most likely got his hopes up.
