ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun has learned that Kings winger Marco Sturm is among the players who was placed on waivers this morning. Teams would have a 24-hour period, starting a few minutes ago, to put in claims for Sturm, after which the Kings can decide what to do, starting with “absolutely nothing” and then getting more significant from there, in terms of making a roster spot available. Sturm was one of five NHL players put on waivers today. I’ll pass along any more info as it might be available…
Really odd, making cap room for a trade?

@Dorian, You gotta joking, didn’t see it coming?? You should have seen it from the time they began speaking about acquiring The Cripple. Remember how we didn’t want to get him before he was set to come off the disabled list in Boston. Remember, DL was going to save some bucks by waiting for him to be activated in Boston before he sent the King’s meat truck to pick him up?? If you didn’t know that this guy was going to spend more time on the disabled list then on the ice from the get go, then you need to stop commenting. This was DL’s big move this year, a proven scorer acquired (with the knees of a 60 year old) How long will it be before Cheechoo is in the lineup?? DL’s a joke. Anyone who thinks that he’s still going to do something wonderful before the deadline is crazy. Who’s left that would make a difference? And if there is someone else, why is it he’s waited so long to get them? We’ve needed a LW since October and before. DL’s a joke. Keeping saving those Wunderkids, Deano, we don’t want to compete for the Cup this year, or next, anyway. Freaking idiot.

If u were a GM of the Kings then this team would be one crapy team u would trade all our future players because u want a cup this year
when u could have one tough team in the future that will be able to get one
U have to play ur Cards right to not mess up the team at all..if u play a dumb one then its going to jack up ur team completely
So i think Dean trying to get a guy without trading Schenn Kopi Doughty Lokti or any good players we have that they trying to get

@Bob Bobson, Respectfully disagree. Creating space for a trade that has been (maybe?) agreed to for a winger. The trade may have to wait until Sturm clears (or not). Let the speculation begin (Booth, Hemsky?). By waiving Sturm it looks like more bodies coming in than going out. It may just be guys from Manchester + futures for one player.

@Kings Fan Vancouver, WA, I hope it is for a trade too but I just don’t see Dean making a big splash given his trade history. Also, it seems like most teams are looking for roster players more than prospects or picks just b/c of the ridiculous number of teams still in the playoff hunt. I shudder to think about the roster players they want like Simmonds, Johnson or Bernier.
I pass on Booth and his concussion history and salary. I also pass on Penner and his inconsistent effort. If we thought Frolov and Poni were bad….

@Bob Bobson,
Don’t forget Justin Williams everyone…even better example, Sturm plays a lot like him when healthy.
This was a bad pick up in the first place because anyone can tell you surgically repaired knee is really an entire season to get 100%.
So if DL made that move actually thinking he could help this year, completely stupid. I am glad Sturm is on waivers, no offense to him, super nice fella.
But Kings have potential to make second round if we can add that offensive piece as our D is very solid and playoffs is defensive hockey.
Bob Bobson Reply:

@Bobson, I think the risk was understated. Sure, on paper it was fine. But the amount of time by staff trying to get the guy ready and the uncertainty at what he was going to delivery ended up being a distraction. Not a huge risk, but more than most people give credence to.

He did actually look better last night, I feelfor the guy. This is definitely a roster space move. But it might be good because if it means we needed to make space for someone in a trade, then we aren’t giving up anything else on the roster (unless its a blockbuster multiplayer deal of some sort). Of course, if that means we moved someone like Schenn, that could be really bad (depending on what comes back).

The only reason I can see for Sturm being waived is cuz they don’t want him no more.
If they just needed a roster spot, they could have sent Martinez to the Ontario Reign for two days. He’s sitting in the press box anyway.
There was also the conditioning assignment option they used with Schenn earlier this year.
So unless we are getting two or more roster players for picks and prospects (yeah, right), the brass is pretty much done with Sturm.
Too bad, I like Sturm and I think he would have fit real nice on the second line once fully recovered.

Trade of prospects/picks for a player and if Sturm clears waivers they will call him up after the trade deadline. I don’t believe DL gave up on Sturm, but he is the best chance of clearing the waivers and they will probably bring a LW otherwise it would make no sense waiving a LW.
[Reply]
Im a little surprised…but I guess the Kings were / are looking for a first line LW and Sturm is not the answer. I suppose if he didnt fit on the top line, then there was no room for him. Well, we will see and yes 2nd line wingers are easy. You can slide any C over, Richardson, Lewis can wing. Lotki, Schenn (which won’t happen.)
And just my opinion but Wayne at his absolute best is maybe a 20 goal season, he reminds me of Frolov, I see him play great a couple games this year, then where is he for a week? And I don’t see him flying around hitting people like he did last year.

I want to believe this was done simply to make cap space for a bigger deal. otherwise, waiving Sturm at this point is just plain dumb. Which means it was probably at TM’s request. Murray prob wants DL to trade for another slug in his lineup like a Zach Stortini. Hell, Sturm already had almost half as many points as Simmonds while playing only a handful of games on one leg. I have no doubt that this is to free up cap space. If it was for a roster spot, it would have been Harrold being waved with an eye towards getting him to Manchester. That tells me that they are about to sign a pretty big fish.
Conspiracy theory follows; I believe that Dean Lombardi had this one in his pocket last night and I also believe that Jim Fox knows what is going on. Fox kept mentioning that Lombardi wasn’t on the phone last night while he was non-stop the night before. Something tells me that this teal was done on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. My guess is Brad Richards (he’s skating again) for Simmonds and a first round pick. Either that or someone so big that nobody has been talking about it. It would have to be a big cap hit.

I believe he just didn’t fit or compliment the team as they hoped, but if he clears – they’ll take him over what they currently have. TM obviously didn’t favor him.
They are battling to hold that playoff spot, and if they strike gold and get a great player, an upgrade to Sturm – well that wont be hard to do – no offense (pun intended) to Marco.
Look at Langenbrunner – since he left NJ and came to Dallas. NJ has been on fire, and Dallas has tanked. It’s a risk either way.
I can’t see him getting picked up by anyone, but it’s a low risk move – I mean Zherdev was put on waivers by Philly and he didn’t get picked up. Sure his contract is muy $$ But he’s like what 26?

@Bryan B,
Absorb Iginla’s contract and sign DD? Don’t know if that can happen. Iginla definitely likes playing at Staples.

@sparky, Then Westgarth for Nash!

I think they want him to work his game out in Manchester rather tjan in LA where we can’t afford to take that kind of chance… I do think another rental winger will be acquired, with Sturm as a backup plan for the playoffs

Nothing will happen. Like it usually does.

I’m more inclined to believe this than anything else, given the Kings’ history.

By putting Sturm on waivers. You know another team will pick him up. Anaheim for one is really interested since they lost out to the Kings when he was traded here.
[Reply]
In fact I just heard that there has been at least one claim already put on for Sturm. This just in.
[Reply]
I sense a trade by the end of the day. I totally had to reread this to make sure I wasn’t seeing things. Feel bad for Sturm, just imagine what this team would look like if we would have given up on Handzus.

@Seattle757, Agree. I like Sturm as well and I believe he would be a very effective 2nd or 3rd line player next season with the Kings for next season. I say that because I believe he is going thru what Williams went thru last season…it takes a while to get back in game shape after major surgery…good post.

HNiC yesterday… ‘L.A. has been talking with Edmonton about Loki Shenn and Clifford for Hemski, L.A. counterd with prospect(forgot name) prospect(forgot name) and Clifford.’
That was all that was said.

@Jamesonafterawin,
Loki, Schenn, and Clifford for Hemsky? Why not throw in Quick and Kopitar while we’re at it? That’s nuts. (not aimed at you, i know you’re just writing something you heard).

@Jamesonafterawin,
the Brown/Simmonds/Clifford type of player is what EDM needs. that said, i dont any of them moving.

You don’t want to get rid off Clifford. He well needed. He is the enforcer for the team.

Someone above mentioned a rumor involving Iginla
I don’t believe any rumors period.
BUT Iginla is the perfect LW compliment to Kopitar. I don’t know how the contract would effect the Kings cap space and ability to sign their own (Quisp would be the man for this!)
But all things being equal if you’re not breaking up the team, he would be the only guy that if the Kings got, would excite the hell out of me.
His style of play would be a seamless fit with the way the Kings play.
It’s just my opinion, but if we’re one player away from a true cup run, he’d be that player.

@nykingfan, He’d be great and seems to be “the piece” that we’ve been looking for. He would bump us from just being playoff contenders to legit cup contenders. Still, I don’t think it’ll happen, but man that would be sweet!!!

@nykingfan,
As long as Calgary is in the hunt, I don’t think Iginla is moved.
Also, Iginla is a RW, not a LW so I’m not sure he’s the right fit right now.
That said, if Iginla did get traded to the Kings, I’d be pretty pleased.

@Luke M,
He is a RW and not LW?
thanks, didn’t realize that.
I love Iginla, but that doesn’t solve the immediate problem.

Brayden Schenn will not be dealt. To valuable of a player. He will most likely be on the opening night roster again next year and will most likely stay the whole season.

@Bryan B, I agree. I predict he will either be our 2nd or 3rd line center.
[Reply]
I think Sturm on waivers is a cap move..and may also be related to the “conditional draft” clause of the agreement. He’s done decently on few games, but with injury history and time away, it creates line shuffling and distraction. Also he’s moving bodies around. Would hate to lose Simmonds–good guy and emotionally not smart–he and DD are roommates and are tight. DD is finally back in better sync. Even though I like Trevor Lewis–I’d be faster to move him..and draft choices. Keep the chemistry strong on the club. Don’t want to see us trade Smyth to Edmonton for Hemsky or Penner. Smyth has the rare talent of being on the right side of the puck and is bar none the best deflection guy and man in front of the goalie. Despite his age, he works like a dog.

Of the names that have been floated I think Booth makes the most sense. LW and manageable cap hit of 4.25.

@MarkA, Yeah I proped Booth’s name on the board about a month ago and got laughed at.
I figure Florida as sellers and celler dwellers like always, and Dean’s gambling with cuncusion players, Booth would be perfect. On and he’s a LW.

I just looked at the standings..
Interesting idea is that Edmonton SHOULD trade someone so they score less goals the rest of the way, and lock in worst league record for draft.

@Jamesonafterawin, easy..
Weak defense, eratic goaltending, inexperience of youth, lack of leadership.
Does not mean a few players would be useful to trade for.

Maybe Bob Berry is gonna lace em up again.

My Colorado buddy keeps saying that the Avs are extremely interested in Berneir. With Quick playing well and a good kid in the minors maybe they will look to sell high on a relativley NHL un-proven Bernier.
Avs are in DESPARATE need for a goalie, and he has had a lot of hype in the league. Maybe a small package (considering Bernier gets paid in peanuts and won’t hurt another team’s cap) can get a Stasny or Duchesne in LA. Makes sense on paper to me…

Dean doesnt really trade for much but hey i could be wrong

Whatever the reason we will be happy to see Sturm in Manchester if he gets sent down because all of us are Bruins fans too. On the upside we will likely get to see Lokti play more in LA were he belongs but on the downside we will miss him sorely in the playoffs. Lokti is a great kid, he was our waiter last year for the At Your Service Dinner/Fundraiser, he is a laugh a minute like a Russian Don Rickles – REALLY.
