To break things up a little, here’s one of Dustin Brown’s videos that he shoots on his BlackBerry and posts online. In this case, it’s the walk up from the bus to the rink level at Madison Square Garden. (If you look closely, you can see Brown — showing himself to be a professional athlete — easing past me and Bob Miller. For some context, since it’s not clearly apparent just from the video, Madison Square Garden is highly unique. In almost every arena, the ice level is “sunken,” meaning it is below ground level. In New York, it’s actually a couple stories above ground, because the arena was build above Penn Station…
That was pretty tight, thanks DB!

@Timbo from Canada,
If I’m reading the rules right, they cannot call him back up until his junior season is complete. Also, if they were to do that it would burn a year of his contract, since Schenn has played 9 NHL games. In a nut-shell, this ain’t happenin’.

Dominick Reply:

@xeropoint, Exactly right. The Kings wouldn’t want to burn a year of Schenns rookie status for a month of play, and maybe the playoffs. It’s different with Lokt because Lokti has already played past the 10 game mark, and his contract doesn’t have as high a cap hit as Schens does.
I’m not so sure Lokti gets the call though, if Sturm can hold out with solid play and Parse comes back soon, things could be much improved (instead of looking to fill a left wing position with a rookie right wing/center). Also DL might be looking to add a peice to the puzzle further plugging up an already shrinking hole for Lokti.

Prediction: Sturm will not be in game shape this season. Same holds true for Parse.
The narrow opening the exists to enter the playoffs will close quickly with Parse and Sturm back in the lineup. Hopefully this will end next week when the roster expands and both Harrold, Drewiske (remember him?) and maybe Westgarth are sent down and Loktionov is recalled.

I will look for the quote (video) I posted it here a while ago. I love JJ, I am higher on him than Doughty. In today’s NHL having 2 puck moving d-men may be redundant because of the cap. @Naturallawyer, To actually obtain a player that would help at a fair price is one thing.
To spout off something in a newspaper column without giving the full story is something else again.
And that includes stating how great a deal the Pens made before they’ve played any significant amount of Hockey since obtaining the player.
Don’t forget: DL’s job is to put the best team on the ice he can.
Her job is to sell newspapers.

@Naturallawyer, it’s obvious that Helene isn’t saying the Kings should’ve gotten Neal as much as she is saying that DL *never* seems to land a big fish. Speaking for myself, I don’t think the Stars would want to send Neal to the Kings either. I doubt Helene is so dumb that she doesn’t know that. Her column isn’t calling him out for failing to get Neal, it’s calling him out for failing to get anybody of significance, and she basically says she doesn’t expect anything more than a lame fill-in kind of trade. I (and we all) hope she’s wrong. We’ll see…

Dominick Reply:

@Naturallawyer,
She does have a point about not landing the big one. The only issue that I have is that she doesn’t offer up any solutions. Their really isn’t much outside of Penner(if available) and a few other left wingers, who would cost a fortune to pry away. I’m starving for a trade, but I’m also not looking at every single trade out there and saying why didn’t the Kings do that? There is really only 1 hole to fill.
[Reply]
Naturallawyer Reply:
February 21st, 2011 at 9:31 pm
@Dominick, I agree, there is only one big hole to fill (LW1). However, we have no idea what is “available.” Who knew Colorado’s Stewart was available, or St. Louis’ Eric Johnson? These players become available when you make a good offer. Has DL made good offers for other LWs out there who we don’t know are “available”? Maybe, maybe not, but we don’t have much to show that he tries to pull those kinds of trades off. Williams was decent, even though he was a hospital patient when DL first acquired him. Williams is not a big fish, but I’d be satisfied if DL found the LW equivalent of Williams.

@Naturallawyer, I don’t fault her, her job is to write interesting articles and get people passionate (one way or another) about what the organization is doing (or not doing).
It’s just that if TM refuses to part with JJ, DD or Schenn to get a Goal scorer “rent-a-player” (or even someone they can sign), I don’t see that as a bad thing.
I know many people here disagree with that. But not everyone…….

Naturallawyer Reply:
February 21st, 2011 at 9:25 pm
@HockeyNerd, I agree with you for the most part, but I’m very skeptical that every possible good deal requires trading DD, JJ, or Schenn. There’s no GM out there who knows Voynov is an all-star who won the fastest-skater competition at the AHL ASG? Nobody wants a 1st round pick, or Martinez, or Muzzin, or Forbort, or Hickey, or Teubert? Obviously you can’t trade all those guys, but DL can certainly afford to trade two of them for a proven scorer. The Kings aren’t ever going to suit up 9 defensemen in one game. Trade some while they have value.

Left Wingers traded since Febuary 9th
Aaron Voros, No where close to a 1rst line left winger.
Jarko Ruutu, See Voros comment.
James Neal, Probably the closest to what we could of used, but would have cost us DD, or JJ.
That’s it.
At least look at the deals that we could of done to fill the hole DL identified last season.

Naturallawyer Reply:

@Dominick, the St. Louis/Colorado trade proved that just about everybody is available if the GMs are creative and convincing. That trade was gutsy on both sides, and it’s highly doubtful either team was “shopping” those players. Still, the GMs found a creative deal that helped their teams. DL has a bazillion assets to work with, but he hasn’t made that kind of deal. You can’t rest on looking at which LWs have been traded or which ones are reportedly available. It’s up to DL to make rain.
FTR, I definitely do NOT want him to make a trade just to make a trade. That’s worse than doing nothing. But I do want him to improve the team, and I don’t believe that that’s impossible when it seems that plenty of other GMs (with less assets) know how to improve their teams.

@Naturallawyer, I agree, but we are only talking about 1 position on the team, as far as needs. I think the thing that gets lost here is the focus on buying a plug vs building an entire team from the ground up with only 1 real flaw that DL would like to buy without tearing apart all his efforts. All those other trades aren’t 1rst line left wingers who could play with Kopi.

@wavesinair,
It’s funny, Halpern cost us Purcell and a 3rd Rounder, and Modin was free.
Should have been the other way around, after their performances.
Add in the Sturm “trade,” and it’s typical DL buying off the clearance rack.
Honestly though.. What if he does catch lightning in a bottle on any of those?
If he did, he can win GM of the Year, and we all sing a different tune.
My gut tells he wants to make a pretty big deal, especially by his own standards. He “kind of” missed out on Kovalchuk, but I’m happy as heck we didn’t get stuck with that contract. I was initially bummed we didn’t get Hossa two Summers ago when we didn’t give him enough years, and he wound up with Chicago, but I got over that quicker than I did with Kovalchuk, because of the length. But, here’s the deal. The Kings are in a position that VERY FEW teams are in. And that is a position of major strength. Each huge contract that DL chooses not to give out, gives us another opportunity for another (possibly better) player. We are in a position to make a HUGE deal for a HUGE player any day. It may not happen before the trade deadline, but maybe over the Summer. Our budget is so carefully strewn across the team that we can re-sign RFA’s AND make a huge splash at the deadline, or Free Agency. Any day.
DL wants a big-time forward. Yes, Hemsky/Penner are probably available, but those are B-level wingers, compared to the magnitude of player DL is after. (This is with all due respect to Hemsky, who is one of my favorite players to watch- amazing skill). I think DL wants a big fish, bigger than Hemsky or Penner. He went pretty hard after Kovalchuk, dangling him in front of Kopitar, only to have it not work out. I can’t see him just throwing in the towel on getting that big sidekick for Kopitar, and constantly going with B-level (Ok, B+ level) players. I really think he is holding out for maybe another team to fall out of the race this week and get a major offensive talent, or TWO.
If I know DL (which I don’t), I don’t think he is the type to listen to critics, journalists, and bloggers and say to himself, “Yeah, I do make too many minor deals and I am a cheapo. I need to grow a pair and make a real man’s trade.” He is a very confident GM, and confident in what he’s doing. And I do see him making a big move for the Kings in the near future. He stockpiled these assets for a reason. To put himself in this position of strength, where he can strike when it’s time. Stay as patient as you want DL, and let’s make sure we get that right player.
The rumors for what Edmonton is asking for Hemsky/Penner are just sickening. That should be what GM’s ask from us for much better players.
We should feel fortunate we have DL as our GM, he is SMART. IF, and anybody who says DL should be fired is nuts, he were to be fired, which he won’t, imagine the position a new GM would be in to move the team forward. TONS of young assets, LOTS of cap space, solid young core to build around, etc.. Yeah, that would be because DL put the team in that position.

@Scot, I empathize with your position. Beyond the will and desire there is also timing for big trades.
The big question; are the remaining 20ish players on this roster ready to make a cup run this year?
Even if DL does pull off a nice trade for picks and prospects, are we still going to be just a playoff contender or a cup contender?
I think it is the former until Lokti & Schenn make the big club for good and we loose some dead weight. That won’t happen until next year.
DL has the option of waiting out for a deal, and I believe it is a good option.

Was that on just before you posted this? I’ve had Home Ice on for an hour so and haven’t heard any Kings talk. Interesting, i’m listening at Sirius online.

@hockeyfanB4gretzky,
I don’t think so and I’m not so convinced that Chris Higgins is that great.

@hockeyfanB4gretzky,
… also, what the heck would Florida do with Poni? His contract is up at the end of this year and the Panthers aren’t going anywhere this year.

Just saying that Higgens would be an upgrade.

Rich,
Wife and I were in NYC on vacation and I got some tickets to the game. We were there representin LA Kings in our jerseys! We got some much crap from the fans but it was an amazing experience. The overall noise level – I’m talking throughout the entire game, not just a goal – blows away Staples Center. Their fans are vicious creatures but very down to earth once you start talking hockey with them. Here are a few pictures from the game:

I encourage every Kings fan to check out other arenas around the league to see how loud these places really are. I’m sure once a Cup comes to LA we’ll blow those arenas out of the water.

@wavesinair, I guess he got irritated with some of the people on this site, kinda of like @HBkingsfan got mad at me, then preceeded to get himself moderated like many of us have who have lost their cool from time to time. I was really hoping to meet him at a Kings game, or at the next Rich Hammond Kings event.

@KH, Who Knows, maybe with Voynov being the fastest skater in hockey, and the fact that he is producing at Manchester maybe Martinez is expendable ?

@puck73, Puck moving defensemen are in high demand. Trading them as prospects brings back much less than after they have a full season.

@KH, I didn’t go to practice today, but I’m guessing KH was there. It was at 10am and still no update, so perhaps there’s something going down… damn, I wish I went!

@KH, Doubt it. He is at practice paired with Drewski. TM probably want a more physical (slower) lineup for wednesday night

Sorry. I mean to say Drewiske is paired with Harrold.

Capitals 31-19-10 If GM George McPhee can add a defenseman and a center before the Feb. 28 trade deadline, I’d like this team a lot more.
I copied the above from ESPN power rankings. It’s a pity that Alexander Semin only has a one year extension and for too much money. Could have been a good fit with the Kings in terms of what they say the Caps need. But, c’est la vie.
Just theorizing. Is that the word? Yes, I suppose so…. theorizing.
