FINAL: Islanders 3, Kings 0

The Kings ended their six-game road trip on a low note, as they were shut out for the fifth time this season and had their point streak ended at 11 games. Despite the loss, the Kings will remain in the top eight in the Western Conference for at least one more day, as neither Calgary nor Minnesota plays today. More from the locker room to come…

    If Terry is worried about players being exposed he needs to take a good look at Doughty. Someone put this kid on a leash. Time to send him a clear message by cutting some of ice time. DesertKing Reply:

    @KingsFanFTW,

    Clue #1 that your PP sucks – You give up the winning goal as a shorthander in the first 4 minutes of the game. You can only depend on your great defense and goaltending for so long and the offense needs to cover when they are not playing up to snuff. Please DL, find us another offensive threat and find a replacement for Kompon.

  13. Ryan says:

    Capt Jam Reply:

    @Ryan,

    The road trip is bookended by shutouts – but two entirely different kinds of shutouts. Our only saving grace may be that ANA has completely abandoned and forgotten the defensive side of hockey. They’ve given up another 6 goals tonight in a little more than half a game. So much for the Beauchemin trade.

    @Capt Jam, Yeah and our bubble gum kiddie offense. Noitce the caliber of the shot, opportunities, and goals compared to us. Now, how can people say it the quantity of shots and not the quality of shots that matter? yeah, let’s just keep throwing it on net formthe points and get our 30 shot quota. Never mind where they come from and if we are set up for nice passes and tips (which we seldom are). And notice how they always seemed to have someone coming down the middle looking for the pass while we have guys always trailing looking for the drop pass so they can start the “wash, rinse, lose the puck cycle”.

    Well, if nothing else this HAS to get them to fire the PP coach. I have never seen a PP so pathetic as it’s been over the past month, and why why WHY is Handzus out on the #1 PP? or any PP? I am tired of saying it but he’s a complete zero offensively now and hes always behind the play coming back. He should be 4th line and PK ONLY. They need a whole new PP system… completely trash this one.

    As always, a team with speed bufuddles the Kings. Even tho the ice is opened up a bit because the other team is trying quick counters the Kings insist on continuing to cycle along the boards and behind the net and they never make passes to players finding space in the offensive zone. They always shoot the puck directly into the numbers of the goalie, its frustrating to watch. They MUST make a move, they need someone with offensive instincts badly.

I love it when a guy like Simmer or Clifford get into it with someone in the heat of battle or as retribution. Not to mention it takes the skill element away from the skill players. I find the Kings system rather insulting. As I stated in another post, the Kings play a system that would befit an expansion team with a total lack of offensive ability. I think this team is capable of more.

The PP was not good last year and is still not good. DL and the coaching staff identified that we needed a top 6 LW and tried to sign the best one available. The Kings looked absolutely lost the entire game. the PP is getting more and more painful to watch. see how the isles used creative ways to carry the puck into the zone without having to dump it in every time? maybe the coaching staff can watch videos of other teams bringing it into the zone on PP’s for a change. hate to say it but this is probably the start of another slide and this late in the season ain’t gonna be pretty.

    @Hat trick, Totally agree. And of course sitting Ersberg on the bench for most of the season totally burned Quick out. Or how bout shoving an overrated Randy Jones down our throats ? Or how bout constantly playing centers as wingers ? Ya know.. I really like TM personally, but I have seen enough of him and Kompon already…enough is enough Dean.

    @KingsFanFTW, It’s cause of his D first system. Look what he did with Teddy, Boyle and Molson. He had them so worried about playing d. That they were so worried about not make the right d play, or be benched. He has made Kopi into a 6 million dollar 3rd line shut down center. He’s so worried about Moller and Loki not play d, that he doesn’t play them. All those guys are goal scorers. We need goal scores. We have 9 grinders, Williams, Kopi and an enforcer. And yet we drink the kool aid that its balance scoring. Stanley cup teams have sniper and playmaker on their top 6. and the bottom 6 are grinders and PK players. And personally I think Kopi should put this team on his shoulders and carry the offensive load. 6 million dollar players get paid to score goals, and drive to the net.

    Seems most people argree sitting Loktionov when the team was rolling was a bad move. Do the Ducks play anyone before the Kings, cause after the spanking they are getting tonight they might be tough to play against the next game. On another note, Richardson should be on the top line ever, he was scratched for a reason, but even at his best is not a top six forward. Kings have tried that over and over again with the same results.

    So both team will be at its fullest but the Duck will not have Hiller i think that how u spell his name,,, can be good for the Kings but to me doesnt matter what goalie u have as long as he can save the puck can be good against the Kings

    Kings have no scorer at all

We need a fast LW. Some to add some spark to Kopi because lately, he’s starting to look like a 3rd liner. And I think that’s more DL’s fault than Kopi’s.

    Don’t know how else to say it anymore. I’ve tried, and I’ve tried, but I have never been able to get anywhere. Maybe the definition of madness is me complaining about the power play and expecting different results. Maybe it’s functioning properly and I’m the one on the brink of insanity. Is everyone happy with telegraphed shots from the point? I know the Islanders sure were tonight, the way they kept picking them off. I even tried to point out unused lanes backdoor that could be used for onetimers, and yet, not even 1 attempt backdoor yet. Not even an attempted onetimer from the slot.

    Am I crazy? Should I not be asking for these things? Does it take a genious to figure out these things? I’m losing it.

    [Reply]

    Hat trick Reply:

    @Dominick, I agree with you it’s beyond pathetic. Maybe i’m not seeing the lanes open up but it looked like there were at least a couple of backdoor opportunities but it’s always a hesitation that stops it.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @Hat trick,
    Someone needs to tell Kompon that it’s the same distance from low to high as it is from dot to dot. Even less distance from dot to the middle of the ice for a onetimer. I get so frustrated I want to smash my TV sometimes.

    @Dominick,

    Only one thing to tell Kompon – “Your fired”

    Harsh – yes, but so is our PP and offense.

    Osaka Reply:

    @Dominick, PP! TM said he looked at all goals scored in the NHL and the majority are scored from going low to high. So all he wants the Kings to do on offense is the same predictable low to high that teams know how to shut down. What he has done is oversimplified the offense trying to get the end result without looking at the reason low to high could work. Maybe you do need east to west passes down low. Maybe you do need guys trying to get open in the slot for a quick shot. Maybe you need to have guys break to the net backdoor for a quick pass/shot attempt. Other teams couldn’t cheat their forwards up high in the shooting lanes. Even if a backdoor play is a low percentage scoring chance ( in his opinion) it keeps the other team honest. Take what is given.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @Osaka, That is exactly what I’ve been complaining about since November. If yu don’t at least attepmt those plays the other team will never respect them, leaving them in position to cheat towards the plays you do make. Exactly my take on this whole power play mess.

    Bkrs-Bud Reply:

    @Dominick, If you fail to mix things up your P.P. is way to predictable and easy to defend.

    LW Anybody? Reply:

    @Dominick, I know I’ve given up asking. TM and Kompon aren’t going anywhere, DL won’t pony up enough to trade for anyone significant, we won’t sign any top UFA’s this summer, and we’ll draft another defenseman. On the bright side, we’ll still be within the league lead of lowest shots against.

    The opening power play pretty much set the tone for the game. Kings looked like they were hoping to score all night. Too many low percentage plays. Lotki needs to be back in the line up or somebody else to bring some life up front.

    [Reply]

  64. Kenny44 says:

    I will always object to playing Westgarth. But benching Lokti tonight, of all nights, made zero sense. TM said Lokti was getting exposed physically. OK, use the day off Friday and talk to him about that. Don’t just scratch him without giving him a chance to figure things out.
    LOOK at the Isles’ centers – only Konopka would have a good chance pushing Lokti off the puck. Give Lokti a chance to redeem himself against that speed lineup, and if he doesn’t improve, sit him against the Ducks who do play a much more “heavy” style (even their smaller forwards).
    You hear coaches all the time talk about putting young players in a position to succeed to get their confidence going. Letting Lokti go against the Isles and, if needed, then sitting him against a tougher Ducks team would seem to be a better way to do that.
    Does anyone else notice that after the Kings have a full practice they get so position focused that they fail to challenge the puck carrier in our zone and fail to attack the net in the offensive zone.

    i’d like to personally thank Terry Murray for his brilliant decision to bench Loktionov and play Westgarth those three very important minutes he played and for sticking up for Kopitar when he was hit with that cheap shot. glad we needed to be more “heavy” against a fast team and sit our offensive catalyst.
    so thanks TM, hopefully those two points won’t cost us a playoff spot.

  66. oscar says:

    My take on Bernier is this: I feel he is an average goalie, with average skills. He wins because the Kings defense is awesome and he looses when the defense or offense falters. The difference between he and Quick IMO, is that Quick will win when the defense and offense falters and will on more occassions than not, win or steal these games. I do not believe that Bernier has that skill. Quick has excelled in shootouts. Bernier looks terrible, somewhat laughable. My point is that if a team is interested in him and they have something to offer …. Trade him. And in final, I believe that if Kopitar can bring skill, trade him. I believe he is streaky and does not play to his potential more times than not. I understand that he leads our Kings, but we can do better with a skilled player who might have less production, but with more consistant production and compasion for this game. That is just my take

    @oscar, there’s something to be said about chemistry with kopi also. he and smyth and he and williams have some chemistry together, you don’t want to mess with that. that being said, he played best to get his contract, and also in bouts this year and last year. he is streaky, i will give you that. but he brings chemistry and stability to the offense, too

    I have come to the realization that nothing wull ever change with the Murray D first system. The results speak for themselves. Murray wants a team of grinders who play dump and chase and have not had a successful PP all season. But the PP coach (Kompon) is still here and collecting a salary for incompetence.
    Brownie and Kopi should be scoring big as they are both capable of doing, but their creativity has been squelched by a coach who adheres to a system he used in the past but is ineffective against fast skating teams who go in low and down the middle. The Kings mostly seem to shoot from the point…into traffic. Nothing is going to change while DL keeps his buddies from Philly on the payroll. I for one am tired of Flyers rejects ,San Jose rejects and the Kings becoming the rehab center of the NHL. Kudos to the breakout boys, Boyle and Moulson who are allowed to play offense first instead of defense. To top it all off, the Kings now want us to renew season seats by Mar 21. It used to be in June. I am faced with a dilemma..do I renew if Murray and Kompon are still here next season and I have to watch the same old crap or do I give up my seats…
