Bernier postgame quotes

Jonathan Bernier’s postgame thoughts…

(on the game…)
BERNIER: “The guys really battled hard. Back to back, it’s never easy, and we found a way to go into the shootout and we were playing from behind twice in the game. It was a great effort by the team, that’s for sure.”

(on the Rangers’ second shootout goal…)
BERNIER: “He got me right there. He made a nice move, and I just kind of tried to throw my stick out there. I hit his skate. I’ve got to be better, that’s for sure. The second (regulation) goal, I lost it in the stands and I didn’t know where it was. That’s the kind of goal, especially at the end of the season, when you’re battling for a playoff spot, you can’t give up those goals, that’s for sure.”

    I’m not mad at Bernie, Quick is the proven SO goalie but you cant be mad at the kid. He’s got a lot of pressure on his shoulders and in the end he got us the point tonight.

    @TheRussianKing, Typical for all NHL back up goalies not to be super sharp. Pretty much played as one would expect for a back up goalie. Hey we got another point on this killer roadie. I’m very happy about it.

    @TheRussianKing, i agree but when the team can possibly with with Quick it sucks to lose with a backup.. Who cares about sympathy for bernier.. He is good and he will be great, he had a tough game…happens..

    That being said.. Quick had a little slump but besides that he gives the kings a chance to win every game. Quick is basically perfect from 3rd period through shootouts.. I would not have any other goalie..

    Berns had a good game. The team battled hard tonight. There’s no shame in taking away one point from a team that has our former players and knows our system. Only down side is Clifford didn’t get ahold of Avery. Even knowing the outcome of the game I still would have played Bernier tonight. The islanders have been lighting the lamp, Quick needs to shut it down. Hopefully Boston put some hurt on them tonight with that win leaving us to walk in and continue the trend.

    His weren’t the only sloppy plays tonight. He’s being a bit gracious in calling it a “great effort.” They played too loose, playing into the hands of a team that needs to use their speed to score goals. I wouldn’t call that a great effort. They played hard, not smart.

    Bernier didn’t have his best game tonight, but he is our back-up, and a rookie. We, the blog commenters, need to understand that he’s playing well considering his inexperience at the NHL level. Also he is not used to playing so little, about once a week, this is probably a big adjustment for him. We just need to give him time to develope into an elite back-up goalie. JMO

    @goldielocks, Nothing like that, there was dead time and they just needed something to say, while the camera was on Bernier kneeling in front of the bench. Then they showed Quick on the bench, who was talking to Scuderi, and Fox said that usually goalies tend to focus when they are waiting for the shootouts and not talk to each other.

    I am so sick of hearing ” I feel bad for Bernier” or “Don’t be mad at Berns… It’s not all his fault”. “He needs more support”. That is BS. He is a paid, professional goaltender in the NHL. Some netminders have what it takes to win and secure points for their team… Some don’t. Right now, Bernier doesn’t have it. He needs to elevate his game or move aside for someone who can.

    @danny, None of this has been in a vacuum, but look at save percentage, gaa, win percentage, or whatever, and the difference RIGHT NOW is obvious.

    DLB Reply:

    @RyanSD, on that theory no rookie goalie would ever develop.

    Least of all Quick, who let us down in the stretch run last year and massively in the playoffs.

    The alternative is to put it all in perspective and not throw someone who’s early in their career under the bus!

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @DLB, Yup, and people like you kept saying Bernier should be the starter. Tonight we saw a sample of how senseless that sentiment is. Some players have bad nights sometimes. This was one of those nights, not just for one, but for several players.

    [Reply]

    DLB Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, if Quick is the starter every game, he gets worn out. We’ve seen it before. And the Ducks’ goalie is literally in the IR for exhaustion.

    Why not play Bernier in back to backs? Isn’t that helping keep Quick fresh?

    danny Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, i honeslty say if quick went down and bernier got to be the man he would be just as good as quick. i know you wont agree but thats fine.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @DLB, I never suggested starting Quick in back-to-backs. In fact, see how I pointed out that starting him in back-to-backs is a BAD idea.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @Danny, There’s no reason to think he *can’t* be as good as Quick. I thought he’d probably be better than Quick at the start of this season, but he probably wan’t. At this point in time, he’s not. I’m for seeing it that objectively.

    RyanSD Reply:

    @DLB, I admit it… I am very critical of Bernier. Maybe to much so. I’m just frustrated with what seems like a lack of development with him. I don’t buy the rookie “excuse” for 1 second. He’s been playing a professional level of hockey for several years. He’s been around the NHL coming up on 2 years now. Quick was able to take advantage of his opportunity and become an “elite” goaltender. Bernier is slow at best to develop. His rebound control is still terrible, mediocre positioning, poor puck control, and an overall “uncomfortable” look on the ice. It shows every night. It’s the same mistakes every night. If I made the same mistakes on a daily basis in my line of work… I’d be fired.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

    @RyanSD, That might be a little hard on him. He usually plays the puck better than Quick, in my opinion, but recently, he’s been inconsistent. It’s not like Quick hasn’t. He had that one game where he literally gave the other team two goals.

    Tonight, however, Bernier didn’t play consistently, and there is a group who would not only point that out if it were Quick, but they’d go so far as to say that Bernier should be starting, etc., etc.

    I, for one, hope, and half expect Bernier to play as well in his next opportunity as he did in his last couple.

    RyanSD Reply:

    @What’s the frequency, Kenneth?,
    I hope you’re right. I don’t mean to bash him. It’s another one of those situations where you go into a building and put up 3 goals. You hope to walk away with 2 points. When it doesn’t happen, you look at the soft goals and….. ???

    LW Anybody? Reply:

    @RyanSD, I would take the middle ground here. Bernier is a decent goalie, and had an off night. The reason this sticks out though, is cause of all the man-love on here for Bernier. I don’t get why a lot of people on here are so high on him. Like I said, I don’t think he’s terrible, but we’ve seen quite enough between this year and last, and I’m not seeing the “Heir to the goaltending throne” that some on here see. He’s kind of small for a goalie these days, plays too deep in his crease, has poor rebound control, and is not nearly as athletic or as strong down low as Quick. So, yeah, I don’t wanna see Quick get burned out like last year, so I’m okay with Bernier getting his feet wet and doing what he can, just kind of tired of hearing people talk about how great he is. Just isn’t so.

    RyanSD Reply:

    @LW Anybody,
    Well said. That’s was my point from the beginning. I’m tired of the excuses and the “don’t worry, he’ll come around” attitude. There’s no room for that. We are not rebuilding. We have a playoff camber team and need wins, not practice and development time.

    RyanSD Reply:

    @RyanSD, ^^^^^^^^^ playoff caliber. Love spellcheck.

    bfstyle33 Reply:

    @RyanSD,

    You are way too critical of JB. It’s not maybe….YOU ARE!!! Lack of development?? Really… You don’t buy the rookie “excuse”….He’s been playing pro hockey for severals years now. He’s been around the NHL coming up on 2 yrs now. REALLY!!!! Bernier has a whopping 23 total NHL hockey experience. That’s not even half of a full season. You have no clue what your talking about regarding the goalie position.

    AHL experience is totally different from the NHL. The game at the NHL level is much faster, plays develop faster, and pretty much everyone can shoot better. As a goalie, the challenge is reading the plays develop in front of you, the teams tendencies, screens, plays etc… On the other side, is that your teammates need to also learn from you and your tendencies as a goalie. Tendencies like how far you challenge shooters, what you want your dmen to do when there’s a rush etc….For a guy that played the majority of the games in the AHL…to be asked to play once a week or more is a lot harder than you think. Let me tell you, its not hard physically but mentally it is tougher. How are you going to get into a rhythm only playing every 7, 10 or 14 days? It’s an adjustment. Quick was able to take advantage of his opportunity because he had a chance to play on a continual basis. Night in and night out and therefore found his rhythm. Also, each goalies have a different learning curve. JB is slow to develop because that is the plan of the coaches and management…..to bring him along slow and steady.

    I’ll give you the rebound control…Quick has the same problem too. “uncomfortable look” Really??? JB looks calm and collected to a fault even that sometimes he looks like he is not trying. Positioning is good and could be better…but the one thing he needs to work on more is his save selection in tight situations and in traffic. He needs to work on battling more in finding the puck when there’s plenty of traffic in front of him.

    Honestly…JQ is a little ahead in the development than JB. Quick has played more regular season games and has a playoff series experience as well. Don’t give up on JB just because of what you said above….Look at Price in Montreal. Price shared the netminding duties with Halak…Price struggled and lost the starting job to Halak. montreal trades Halak and now it’s all up to Price and …look at how well he is doing now…playing regularly. The only difference is Price is playing continuously getting a chance to find his rhythm. Like night and day!!!

    @RyanSD, I know what you mean. I agree on the soft goals, but the D was bad too. Bernier DID make some big stops in the 2nd. I think it was a bad game defensively all the way round, including Bernier. He seemed pretty sheepish in his comments. It is what it is, and he’s the backup. Remember the troubles Quick had this late last season. He’ll probably pull a boner or two over the next 30 games (if they get that far) too.

    As for “how great he is,” I hear you. I guess my vociferous response to that attitude got me on moderation again.
