Afternoon reading: no goalie rivalry

My LAKings.com feature for this week takes a look at goalies Jonathan Quick (left) and Jonathan Bernier (right), focusing on the lack of internal rivalry among the two young goalies. Thanks for reading…

    The enemy of my enemy. Awsome to see the character that breeds winning being instilled in these 2. Playing your role free of ego will make both of these guys top goalies for decades.

    wavesinair Reply:

    @Dominick,

    Free from ego? Hardly.

    This is all well and nicey-nice right now but I have no problem with fierce competition between players vying for a single position. Does that mean automatic acrimony? Of course not.

    But if both players have no ego and simply don’t care if they start or the other guy starts “just as long as the team wins” then there is a problem. Both guys, I’m sure (despite this article), want very much to start every game they can. That, my friend, is ego.

    Each one must believe they will give the team the best chance at winning or they are not competing. It’s really that simple. I truly believe there is no reason you can’t be professional, be a team player, be humble…and want to be the starter. Want to be the guy.

    The enemy of my enemy…sure…but when push comes to shove and one goalie is starting in the Stanley Cup finals, the other guy will be wishing he was the one in the limelight. And that’s how it should be.

    @wavesinair,
    I want the copetition, but that’s farther down the road (at least 2 summers from now). Right now having them understand their roles on the team and doing everything to make sure they both remain sharp can be more of a benefit than having both of them trying to sabotage each others chances of succeeding. When it does come time for them to compete I hope they have developed a relationship that brings out the best in both, and an honest effort that’s worthy of the prize.

    A few years back I watched 2 boxers(true story) who were offered the chance of a lifetime to box against each other in a match that was covered nationally. Although best of friends and making the trip together, they both wanted to win. When they met in the ring it was one of the best boxing matches I ever saw. Absolutely Epic. Tyson faught in the main event and set a record for fastest knock out ever, but all the media could talk about was that fight between the 2 undercards.

  6. Stone says:

    Both of these guys are gonna be top-tier goaltenders for years to come. While Bernier may be content as a backup for a year or two, sooner or later he’s gonna wanna be a starter… Some where. good news is, we have both of these guys for a few years. Plenty of time to decide which one we wanna keep for the long term. And possibly get something in return for the other?

    [Reply]

    fsd1 Reply:

    @Stone, or, just have them each play 41 games a year?

    [Reply]

    Stone Reply:

    @fsd1, you think they’d both be happy with just 41 games every year? and how much would we eventually have to be paying to keep both?

    [Reply]

    fsd1 Reply:

    @Stone, I doubt they would, but I like to dream sometimes……

    I have always liked Quick, but reading stuff like this just makes me even prouder he is on our team. Just to hear that kind of professionalism and unselfish attitude is really refreshing in this day and age. Quick has really stepped up and to see how mature he is beyond his years is amazing.

    Can’t wait for tonight! Keep it up Kings!!!

    Time to stir things up… guys at “the 4th period” are spreading rumors about Hemsky and the Kings again.. Teubert with Simmonds mentioned..any thoughts on this? Like it? Hate it?

    [Reply]

    Token Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, Total, utter, complete fabrication.

    We need another right winger like we need a root canal.

    There are not the droids you’re looking for.

    [Reply]

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

    @Token,

    Personally I’d hate to see Simmers go, I could definitely see Teubert as a good trade piece though, with the way Martinez has been stepping up his game.

    I do agree with the right wing assessment

    [Reply]

    Shotongoal Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, wait so you’re saying you would rather have Simmonds at right wing for the remainder or this season, including playoffs, over Hemsky? Because Hemsky would take over Simmonds RW spot on the team. I would much rather have that known scoring depth for the rest of the season and playoffs. Remember again, gotta give up something to get something! Check out Hemsky’s playoff numbers….not bad!!

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings,

    Well if you look down you’ll see I realized Simmers would be replaced as a RW. Completely overlooked that haha

    BigMikeonD Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, Teubert I am okay with, but not Simmer. Just say no. Why are we getting another Center? Penner is the only Oiler I want, well only one who might be available.

    BigMikeonD Reply:

    @BigMikeonD, Check that, Right winger. No, no, no. Picks only is what I want to give up.

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

    @BigMikeonD,

    Side note…not that I’m for this..but trading Simmers DOES open a RW position

    wavesinair Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, I hate that you’re spreading the rumors that are being spread.

    [Reply]

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

    @wavesinair,

    Not spreading, just asking opinions. Wondering what other fans (those who actually watch the Kings) think of this. Instead of all these “reporters” who aren’t fully aware of our needs.

    [Reply]

    wavesinair Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, High scoring left winger. Everyone knows that. End of story.

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings,

    I’m aware of the needs here, just asking questions for the fun of it is all…

    Have any suggestions as to what you would do before the deadline?

    Jesse Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, I would not trade Wayne. He has done a very good job on topline. I’m thinking why trade a player that fits our topline. It’s not easy find players who are topline wingers. Infact for searching for one. Just keep Wayne to stay on topline and make a trade to up grade on LW and see what happens. We don’t want to trade a young player that can put up some numbers and look bad in few years when comes to his prime.

    [Reply]

    kingsxstevenxkings Reply:

    @Jesse,

    It’s a hard decision here, because I don’t want to be over optimistic when it comes to Simmers (especially being a King’s fan it hard not to). At the same time you don’t want to undervalue a young player

    It’s hard to have a rivalry, when one is a top NHL goalie, and the other is lucky to have a backup job.

    He has a .903 SV% and 2.72 GAA

    Turco .897 3.08
    Gigure .898 2.88
    Ellis .888 2.97

    Martin Brodeur has a lower SV% @ .898

    Where is Bernier lucky to be a back up?

    [Reply]

    oldthunder Reply:

    @kingsxstevenxkings, Bernier only has played 3 statistically miserable games of 16 this year, the remaining 13 have been quite good statistically. Take away those three bad beatings and Bernier is posting a 0.929 save %, which in my opinion is darn good to be a starter for most teams let alone being “lucky” to be a backup as you put it. I think early in the year Bernier was adjusting to the game and a new role as a backup, he will only continue to get better as will Quick. I can only imagine both next year with more experience and a potentially stronger Kings team in front of them.

    Its amaing we have two great goal’es.Other teams are praying to find just one with a rookie back up. Its a little scary though to think in acouple of years how much money the two will want????????

    [Reply]

    shorthanded Reply:

    @gene, I will tell you what will happen…..when their contracts get close to an end we will extend one contract and trade the other goalie away. Who that will be is TBD, but JQ will be a UFA and JB will be an RFA so that might play in. The return we will get for JB or JQ should be pretty high, so its just a waiting game.

    I just can’t wait to see who we get……its gonna be a game changer I recon.

  12. Jesse says:

    Kings now are presenting their goalies in this order. Number 1 is Quick and number two is Bernier, and don’t forget Jones. Jones a very good goalie as well. The system doesn’t allow Kings goalies to show case their skills. Preety easy saves most of the night. Quick has stole two games for Kings. Red Wings and Flyers, and has given away Wilds game. Only the coaches know who fit the number one role many years to come.
