Scouting the Flames

Which team is going to party like it’s 2005? The Kings haven’t won in Calgary since Dec. 2005, and the Flames are looking for the first seven-game winning streak since Nov. 2005. The Kings got their power play going a bit Wednesday at Edmonton, with two goals, but now the Kings face a Calgary penalty-kill unit that has been 19-for-20 during the Flames’ six-game winning streak. Here’s the latest on the Flames, following their morning skate, from the Calgary Herald, followed by the expected lineups for the Flames and Kings…

Cmon Kings! There line up is nothing compare to ours. The break down..

    Alex Tanguay-Brendan Morrison-Jarome Iginla < Loktionov-Kopitar-Brown

    Rene Bourque-Olli Jokinen-David Moss < Smyth-Stoll-Williams

    Curtis Glencross-Matt Stajan-Tim Jackman = Ponikarovsky-Handzus-Simmonds

    Lance Bouma-Mikael Backlund-Tom Kostopoulos < Clifford-Lewis-Richardson

So you can see our lines are clearly better. GO KINGS GO!

@kingme81, …and you even completely left out the Goaltending and D, LOL

@kingme81, Yes, but that is paper. We need to win the battles. The Flames usually go after the kids, so Lokti needs to keep his head up. I can’t wait for this one.

@kingme81, Not to be Debbie Downer, but do you know how many goals Kopitar and Brown have scored in the last 18 games? 2! Right now, pretty much any line is better than theirs.

@kingme81, I don’t know about that. Calgary looks pretty good on paper. The only place we might have an even slight advantage, would be on D.

Regardless, should be a fun game!

5 on 5 and power play should be the focus for the Kings. Beat them in these areas and everything else will work its self out.

    KC23 Reply:

@Dominick, You realize that is pretty much 92-96% of any game. You beat any team in those areas and pretty much can’t help but win.

    Dominick Reply:

@KC23, 5 on 5 has been our cryptonite since last season. The power play scored 2 the other night, but went 1 for 20 something before that, so I’d say we need to focus a little in those areas.

@Dominick, I think the key tonight is going to be the physical battles. Everytime we play Calgary it’s very hard hitting.

@Dominick, With all due respect, that’s like a baseball manager saying “As long as we have good pitching, we get 3-4 clutch hits, and solid fielding, everything else should work itself out”. What exactly IS “everything else”?

@HockeyNerd, if we can outscore them…we will win….remember this stat…The Kings have NEVER lost after leading after 3 periods!!!!

    HockeyNerd Reply:

@neil, You usually DO win if you outscore a team, LOL

    Dominick Reply:

Let me rephrase. Pay more attention to 5 on 5 offense since we had no 5 on 5 goals against Minnasota, and one 5 on 5 goal against Edmonton. :)

Hey, this is not a rumor, but I am just throwing it out there. If the Oilers get the #1 pick and there are no defencemen worth of a top 5 pick, should we trade a d prospect to select Landeskog (sp)? He is DLs type of player and fits our needs.

    [Reply]

    xeropoint Reply:

@jet, The Oilers aren’t going to trade their first round pick, unless a name like Doughty is going the other way. Even if it were to happen, DL doesn’t draft based on current need but goes with best player available. See Forbort, Derek.

    Token Reply:

@jet, Son, to get the Oilers first round pick the Kings would have to trade Kopi, Quick, Doughty or Schenn.

    Ain’t neva’ gonna happen.

@Token, Yeah, I guess you’re right. Maybe we could ship Westgarth to the Pens for Crosby instead?

So I checked out this Bouma kid on YouTube.

He’s a dirty little turnip. Hits guys when they’re down and just a dirty fighter.

    He needs a good beatdown.

This is an entirely different hockey club than the oilers. Hope the boys will be all business tonight cause CGY is gonna bring it. Huge game in the mental department.

  7. Shakes says:

Whoa, this game is on Hockey Night in Canada…so maybe we’ll get some Kings in the extended postgame interviews on CBC (although unlikely since they’ll probably hit the road right away)
