The view from Edmonton

As of this morning, both of last night’s Kings power-play goals still belong to Ryan Smyth. The Kings intended to leave the decision up to the NHL chief statistician, to determine whether Smyth or Drew Doughty should get credit for one or both of the goals. It was a good night for former Oilers Matt Greene and Jarret Stoll, who improved to 5-0-0 in Edmonton since being traded to the Kings. Here’s a sampling of how last night’s Kings-Oilers game was presented by the Edmonton media…

Oilers lacking on the blue-line (Edmonton Journal)

Oilers cut to the Quick (Edmonton Sun)

    wow, great picture. i didnt realize how annoying that hanging oil rig looks to someone not watching on TV.

    @Sebastian, You’re right about that oil rig…definitely distracting!

    @Sebastian, I’m surprised that NHL rules allow such a hanging hazard like that. Wonder if pucks ever deflect off that or it’s just the picture’s perspective making it look so intrusive?

    Sebastian Reply:

    @Ari, im sure the Jumbotron weighs a lot more than the oil rig. just seems like it would obstruct the view of the fans in the nose bleeds. maybe not though.

    @kennynakamoto, haha…that one’s not so bad, but the one in Anaheim has to be the worst in the league.

    @Sebastian, Is THAT what it is? Wow. I would hate to watch a game there.

    @Keeper, yeah, im not a big fan of the castle entrance at staples center, but at least it doesnt interfere with anything.

    its the scoreboard at the new Cowboys stadium all over again… apparently the presence of oil and gaudiness are linked.. oh wait, i always knew that.

    Quick peek at the standings shows us tied for 8th with Chicago. It also seems we have a game at hand on Phoenix and Anaheim and are only 3 points out of 4th. If we do well on this road trip I don’t see how we don’t make it in.

    It’s hilarious how the Canadian media don’t really want to discuss Smyth’s quote about not thinking he scored either one.

    Loved your opening paragraph by contrast, Rich!

    Looking at the Kings players stats on NHL.com shows Smyth with 19 goals and Drew with 6 (game log shows him with two goals last night). Either it’s changed and hasn’t been announced yet, or the guy updating stats took it upon himself!

    @Matt R,

    I see smyth with 21 and Drew with 4.

    Not sure where you’re looking. Also says 19 for Smyth and 6 for Drew on the Kings website.

    But his recent games has him at 6? Maybe it was changed back.. haha

    Maybe Rich will clarify soon :/

    @Matt R, Interesting.

    Michael_DD8 Reply:

    If you go under stats, it has Drew at 6, but his lifetime points, it has him at 4 and smyth at 21. It would be nice to see them give it to Drew. Do they go back and change goals even a day later though?

    What stood out to me most was that in one of the articles from the Edmonton paper, they were drooling and foaming at the mouth over the 2 L.A bluechip defensemen Doughty and Johnson, who they said absolutely have absolutely ruined the Oilers in the 3 games we have played them. WAIT A MINUTE ! Are these the same 2 that a lot of people on this site at one time or another have wanted shipped outta here? Tell ya what…The Oilers no Doubt will gladly take them off our hands ! lol

    [Reply]

    RabidZiggy Reply:

    @puck73, Lol those guys are going NO WHERE! I love when people on this site freak out and want them gone whenever we hit a bad stretch. Those guys are beasts!

    [Reply]

    Dan H. Reply:

    @puck73,

    DD is going nowhere and JMFJ just signed a long term deal. They can foam all they want but for their own health get over calling for these two to be shipped. Ain’t gonna happen.

    either way…the Kings PP won the game last night. Finally Drew got a good setup pass because he was set up for a one timer on the left side, rather than on the right like he usually has been. Murray is finally coming around.

    puck73 Reply:

    @Sebastian, I hope you are right about him and Kompon because I have wanted these 2 canned weeks ago. It seems to take these 2 guys a long time to figure things out. Of course, Murray could still upset momentum by putting Westgarth in the lineup, or making yet another line change ! lol

    I thought an underrated part of last night’s win was Zeus’s work on the faceoffs. If I remember correctly, Doughty’s second goal (yeah, yeah, Smyth’s, blah, blah) came pretty much right off yet another Zeus faceoff win. Overall, it was the best game he’s had in a while, I thought.

    LA KING BOBchi Reply:

    @puddle, Edmonton had to had the record last night for being tossed out of the circle so many times..

    @LA KING BOBchi, Hahaha, you’re so right. That was crazy. I almost thought they were doing it on purpose after a while!

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @puddle, Since the Phoenix game at Staples the team is being allowed to play a more offensive brand of hockey, and Zeus has really bared down and contributed as much as anyone…Good ta see !

    @puddle,

    I think its just all messed up. I think it will go in the books as smyth’s goals. Maybe not though, Drew deserves 1..

    In the middle, it shows Doughty as the leader in goals with 2. On the left, under the Kings stats, it shows him as having 2 assists. It’s really weird.
