After he praised goalie Jonathan Quick last night, assistant captain Matt Greene made a point of singling out rookie winger Kyle Clifford for giving the team a lift through his first-period fight with Boston’s Shawn Thornton. Greene referred to Cliiford as “one bad dude,” and it’s tough to argue. Today, I asked Greene to elaborate on last night’s thoughts, particularly in terms of how Clifford’s play has the ability to lift his teammates…
GREENE: “It’s just a guy making the ultimate sacrifice. They’re trying to get the momentum going, and it’s the hardest job in hockey, for sure. He’s a guy who came in here, and both he and Westie [Kevin Westgarth] have done a great job for us this year. I think it’s lost on a lot of people, some of the guys he’s fighting. Thornton, I don’t even know how old he is, but he’s 12, 13 older than him, and there’s no fear. The way he goes about what he does, it’s amazing. It’s amazing to all of us, and you just want to let guys like that know that they’re appreciated and how valuable they are to a team.”
Answer: So that’s palpable on the bench, right? I see you guys banging your sticks on the boards, that sort of thing…
GREENE: “It’s huge. He’s got everybody’s respect in this room. At the same time, you can just tell from the way he approaches the game and the way he battles, that he will do anything for us. I know that I, and I’m sure everybody else in this room, would do the same thing for him, too. It’s amazing to watch him go out there and do it every night, him and Westie. It’s a tough job, and you just want them to know they’re appreciated.”
I do really love Clifford. Quick question, Rich. Do the Kings have an award going to the most hardworking player after each game? Like the Penguins and Caps have (the shovel and hard hat) and was shown on 24/7.

Broke into the league as a thug/brawler, left a lot of that behind yet carried the respect, and began to put up offensive numbers and be a leader of men out on the ice. Shanny is my call.

@VanKingsFan, No chance on Cam Neely. Cam is in a class of his own (almost).. Not many can combine that kind of toughness with that kind of skill. Cam might have scored 600 goals if not for injuries. Also, I don’t see Kyle Clifford in an acting role anytime soon. If Clifford can perfect his shot, and gain confidence on the puck control side of the game, he would be similar to Cal Clutterbuck in Minny. Dude is fearless, fights, hits, and has an amazingly pure shot. A lot of his goals are absolute snipes.

@mcsorleyfan, watch film of Greene trying to fight; anytime his gloves hit the ice he’s right behind them. Westgarth can fight; he’s the best the team has. Would you have preferred to see Clifford’s face squashed by Scott? Greene’s a far more well rounded player, and tough as nails. He’s just not a fighter, though he is game as hell and will try his best. To be a deterrent an enforcer must have a prayer of winning.
John Reply:
January 26th, 2011 at 1:00 pm
@mcsorleyfan,
I respectively disagree. Westgarth is not our best fighter – that honor goes to Clifford, followed closely by Simmonds. Since Westgarth can ONLY fight, he shouldn’t play on this team until he can contribute something else as well. I mean, when was the last time we badly needed a momentum change & he went out and fought somebody? He simply doesn’t understand his role & is no good at it.
mcsorleyfan Reply:
January 26th, 2011 at 5:29 pm
@John, Actually, within his weight class, I would agree. I misspoke myself there. Westy DOES need to build a skill set; no arguement there. Westy is the only one on the team ready to stand in against Scott and Boogie and Chara, currently. If I saw Clifford take on Scott and not get destroyed, I’d be ready to agree that KW is superfluous. Clifford is not someone I’d want to see out due to a fight injury either. If the promise of Westy being able to take on any heavy in the NHL while producing numbers like Richardson ever comes true, I’m all there for it; frankly, I’m starting to wonder how long you give the guy, myself. I’ve been defending Westgarth all season, and am starting to get impatient with the guy myself- but I will stand by my original statement- pick any 10 scraps from Greene and they all go the same- gloves drop, they grab on, Greene throws, loses balance, falls down. What’s worse is the scrap Matt had when he tried taking on Crombeen and wound up on the IR. I’d really REALLY not like to see another lost-time injury to a D-man this season; we can’t afford it, and that’s where I was coming from. No disrespect intended in your direction; just want to see us actually make the playoffs.

Other players are learning that when Clifford gets the “crazy eyes” that they should skate the other way. I can only recall two instances where he didn’t come out on top (one being against that giant in Chicago). Even when he lost those, he gained respect by be willing to take on those guys and when he lost, paying proper respects in a humble manner. The best part about Clifford is that you can actually see his hockey skills and overall game improving every night. I like Westie, but as long as you have Clifford and Simmonds in there, you get the best of both worlds – guys with speed wand skill who won’t let their team get pushed around.

@DesertKing, I agree entirely with the overall sentiment of your post, but actually that fight against the “giant in Chicago” (John Scott) was Westgarth, who got absolutely pummeled the first time they squared off, and merely beaten the second time. Clifford (according to hockeyfights.com), is 7-1-3 on the season. His one loss was to Theo Peckham of Edmonton.
Simmonds is 3-0-2. Westgarth? 3-4-0.
Also, the Kings are 16-19-1 when Westgarth dresses. When he does not, the Kings are 10-3-0. Hmmm.

Let’s face it, when two players square off its usually to establish momentum in a game or to right a wrong. In the case when its for momentum I’ll take Clifford over Westgarth everytime. I’ve watched Westgarth lose too many fights that were momentum changers this year, and Clifford’s “hockey” skills are far superior to Westgarth’s. The only real “hockey” play that Westgarth has made this year that I can recall was taking two Sharks with him on Richardson’s goal in that big game in SJ. Nothing against Westgarth, but I would much rather him not be in the lineup.

I was hunting around for predraft info on Clifford. At the time of the draft a lot of people thought that we could have had him later on than the second round. But I found these comments from USA Today’s hockey analyst:
Clifford didn’t bloom until the second half of his second season in the OHL, but he’s blossomed into a power winger who can skate, drop the gloves and pop the occasional goal. He’s a legitimate tough guy who skates quite well for a big man and has enough skill to play a regular shift. Lots of teams are laying in the weeds on this kid and somebody will get an itchy trigger finger early in the second round for fear that another club will jump up and grab him.
Glad we did.

Picture him protecting line mate Brayden Schenn?? Or anyother player. If I’m Simmonds and Lewis I skate around like I personally rented the ice and order people to do things and take every liberty I can knowing the “freight train” is right there to solve my issues.

This is something that CAN be worked on with the other guys. I hated seeing him injured by Crombeen while attempting something he had little chance of accomplishing to begin with. Greene’s game as hell; he has the heart and the willingness to engage, but he could sure benefit from an upgraded skills package. Next question; if I’m Westgarth, do I help Greene to render me obsolete??

This was the reason Brayden Schenn just didn’t have a spot on the roster this season. Clifford being a wing helps, however the Kings had Clifford slotted to be a 3rd line wing in the next few years, but he worked so hard last season, and in camp, he was recognized as being one of the Top Defensive forwards, and hardest workers in the OHL.
In response to his shy or maybe uncomfortable personality, he’s very humble and once he gets to know you a little, then he opens up. He’s reportedly very vocal on the bench, not that way outside of the rink however.
I met him at FanFest when he was walking out to go to lunch. He was a little surprised I recognized him, since he at the time was not someone people were very familiar with. We spoke, and after the ackward introduction he lit up in terms of a smile and was very talkative, even asked what number he should use on the index card I had him sign.
Harty is from the same neighborhood literally, and in the beginning of the season at Tip A King, after speaking to Harty, I went to Kyle first at Tip A King, asked him a few questions and had a great time telling him how excited people were here in LA to have him playing for the Kings.
At the Edmonton Legends night, I was speaking with Scott Oake and Kevin Weekes, but I had given my friend some of Kyle’ Upper Deck rookie cards to give to Kyle as they came off the ice from warmups. Most of the time players ignore you, and you really aren’t supposed to lean over or try to have things signed. My friend got his attention, showed him the cards, and he came over and took them and smiled.
