According to Mike Brophy of Sportsnet, Dean Lombardi apologized to NHL vice president Mike Murphy for his comments last night, in which he essentially accused Murphy of being personally biased against the Kings in goal-review calls.
“I called Mike Murphy and apologized first thing this morning,” Lombardi told Brophy. “He was very professional and a bigger man than me.”
The full story can be read by clicking here. The league has yet to announce what punishment Lombardi might receive for his comments.
Meant it at the time, and deep down does still mean it. Gotta think of the bigger picture here, and in the end, these guys do MAKE and BREAK some games ( as weve seen before )so we cant stay on there bad side haha.

@Jstin, Well, because his comments were stupid and insulting. Remember when Canucks fans were crying conspiracy in the playoffs (hilariously because they thought that Mike Murphy was a Kings stooge!)? That was absurd, and so is this. Just because it is coming from someone on our side doesn’t make it any less childish. They blew the call. End of story. No black helicopters needed.

Who cares? The Kings gave up another goal right after the blown call. That goal was enough to win the game.
If Dean wants to call someone out publicly, it should be his coach and the lack of effort of his players. He should also call himself out for failing to address the ONE need the Kings had during the offseason.
The system doesn’t work, the Kings are regressing, the players give the same lame excuses for losing, etc. Barring some miracle, this season is over for the Kings and I’m guessing this will be the last that we see of Terry Murray on the bench.

Sorry but u r wrong! The “system is very defensive to start, TM started letting loose and letting the forwards play and not worry about D zone responsability as much. But what happened? We gave up 13 goals in 2 games. Then he put the clamps down. We havent scored goals since. This info is from a good source, too close to the team to reveal. Thats why when we have all our D-men healthy we score, with all of them in the line-up he gives the forwords less D zone responsibility. The sooner TM is gone the better

How am i wrong? what you just said is a player problem, not a system problem. Havent you heard of 2 way play? To be able to go on the attack, get back, and break up a play in your zone, get it out, dump and change. The kings have to find there medium as a team. Use there players to there strengths. Its not the systems fault, that the puck couldn’t beat bryz last night.

@NOT IMPRESSED, The majority of the shots the Kings had were easy saves. There were a few that Bryzgalov didnt see but with basic positioning, the pucks hit him. I didnt really count that many scoring opportunities for the Kings, so who cares it they were credited for 50 shots or whatever, all that matters is scoring, and they didnt do it. Yes, the effort was there, but there was no creativity, no cross ice passes to get the goalie moving side to side. everything the kings did was completely predictable and this is the reason they did not score a single goal in 60 minutes.

@Sebastian,
There was no creativity because the Kings don’t have creative forwards. It’s really no more complicated than that. They have some good forwards, but creative isn’t the first word that would come to mind.
Kopitar is another issue. He is very gifted and creative. But that’s it. It’s my opinion that the way the nhl is these days is built around creativity and speed.
It’s like the nfl. The nfl used to be a run first league. Now it’s a pass first league.

@Sebastian, I’m not ready to give up on the season yet as so many people seem to be ready to do. There’s 35 games left, 5 points behind a playoff spot. Yes, there is a long road stretch in February but considering the way the Kings have played at home lately, this might be an advantage.
Yes, the Kings offense is way too predictable. Dump, chase, battle along the boards. Part of it is because of the defensive game plan, part of it is the lack of enough skilled players. The Kings are very strong defensively so you have to give TM his due there. But right now, they need some offensive spark.
However, I’m very critical of his lineup decisions. Its full of contradictions, especially with regards to lines. Why does he keep sending virtually the same PP units out there, even after going 0 for January it seems like? Doughty and Kopitar do not have to play on the same unit. Williams can play on the first unit as well. Subtle changes is sometimes all you need. On the other hand, he likes to make frequent changes to his forward pairings. The demotion of Handzus to the 4th line was a bit of a head scratcher to me. If he’s going to do that, he should get even more drastic. Brown is not a bona fide first line player, yet the majority of the season he and Kopitar have been paired together. With so many different first line combinations already used, why not think really outside the box:
Loktionov-Kopitar-Simmonds
Brown-Handzus-Clifford
Williams-Stoll-Smyth
Richardson-Lewis-Ponikorovsky

@Katy Perry,
Yeay Katy, that is a fact. BUT… If the goal was not allowed then we are taking a face off in our zone and not at center ice. Different personnel are on the ice, we are in a different situation all together. Down low you determine a left handed face off or right hand depending what side your on. Center ice you go with the strong face off man pulling to his strength. So that comment about giving up another goal can be taken right out of the equation if the first goal was not allowed. if not allowed everything is different. The Game may have gone to OT where we at least would have come out with a point if we lost in a SO. This all stems from the FIRST goal, you can throw everything out after that…

At this point missing the playoffs, in my opinion, will be the ebst thing for the Kings. We are not going to go anywhere without a true scoring threat and if we miss the playoffs and get a high pick we should package that along with some other assets for a bonafide scoring winger. I dont see us getting anyone from UFA and frankly I dont think Semin is a good fit for this team. Also, it doesnt matter if its a RW or a LW, because Dustin is not a true 1st line winger and if he moves down to the 2nd line that is fine by me. You dont need 3 stars on one line but at least 2 All-Stars, so Kopi and the player we get will be good. Then we fill in with role players. Schenn will be the 2nd or 3rd line Center and one of Handzus or Stoll will be 2nd or 3rd line Center. Also, I was impressed with Lokti, he needs to get faster and work on his Stamina, got tired too quickly, if he gets that going he can be a difference maker. He has the skill and smarts package that our grinders dont have. There was one play on the PP when he didnt do the same old ring around the boards and stopped it and we had a great scoring chance, in the first period. Also, for a 20 year old he made stick to stick passes that our vets cant seem to make.

Last night I saw a few plays where he was out of gas, there was even one shift where he motioned to get off as Phoenix was going on the offensive and the bench made him stay because you are supposed to skate back and play Defense then change after. So as the play went on I see he did indeed stay on the ice and came back to finally change when the puck went in deep. He is young and I agree they want to keep his shifts short, but in no way is he on the same level of conditioning as Brown and Kopi, and he weighs a lot less. If he can get that up and keep up with them from the start until the end of a shift then we have something there.

@Bobo, Love Loktionov. He brings creativity and skill, two things the Kings are fairly short on. Even with the PP futility, I think Loktionov made some plays that were deceptive and effective. I can see him developing chemistry with Kopitar, unless of course they decide to make him strictly a center.
Not sure about the conditioning part. Shifts were short, but he probably was instructed to do so. There was one play where he got taken out because of his size but speed wise he is fine and will probably get faster as his body develops.
His stick work and offensive sense look to be there. He is opportunistic and moves around on the PP instead of just standing around all the time, waiting for a pass. I truly hope he gets an extended look, not just one or two games. He seems to have learned something after being sent down to Manchester.

Biased against the Kings or not they have blown two calls against the Kings so far.
the league had arenas install a camera above the goals to determine pucks that cross the line or not, why not install cameras at crossbar height behind both goals to determine high sticks? with the current broadcast camera angles, all they will ever say is that it was inconclusive because it does not really show relation between sticks and crossbars, so the call on the ice will always stand.
If the Kings dont start winning, that “Playoff Priority” ad is just insulting to the fans. Specially since the players all think that they are playing fine and the need to stick with it.

Dean’s comments were injudicious. He was right to apologize for his comments.
But Lombardi’s comments does not justify the egregious and game-changing error by the NHL Toronto officials. The call was so obviously wrong, Mike Murphy should be ashamed of himself. The highly unjust failure to overturn a plainly wrong call by the NHL officials in Toronto damages the entire NHL. The integrity of the league is in question.
Mike Murphy should apologize to all NHL fans. The NHL should review its operations.

Talk about working hard, doing what your coaches want, and not getting rewarded. Instead, it comes back to you. Once the real rosters got formed after 15 games the Kings stared getting obliterated.
Though it may speak well of our prospects, I have no idea how the fluke 12-3 run became the Holy Grail yard stick of this teams expectations.
We simply do not have the talent on the current roster to make a playoff run.
The big question is if we are going to waive a few ineffective veterans to give our prospects some NHL ice time, or are we going to perpetuate a delusion and continue to play the has-been squad.

There are clearly three issues here:
1): Kings can’t score to save their lives;
2): NHL Video Review did not have the photograph now widely disseminated proving (with the on-ice video) the puck was hit above crossbar with a high stick. The calls of ALL on-ice official were CLEARLY incorrect;
3): Dean Lombardi’s train came off the tracks last night with his criticism of Mike Murphy.
Each of these issues need to be addressed separately.
1): Kings blow cheese offensively; Dean Lombardi–FIX IT!
2): Perhaps photographs should be acceptable if sent quickly to the Video Review booth. This is emerging technology that should be explored. At first, only staff photos should be accepted, but these could be sent digitally and wirelessly to Toronto. Even I have a camera with adequate resolution to be of help. Place a photographer at each end of the rink plus on each side of the goal line, and let them snap away…
3): DL is in major trouble. The ENTIRE NHL ESTABLISHMENT has declared a major foul. The NHL Home Ice people had them on, multiple announcers, multiple officials, all declaring DL’s words offensive. There will be a major fine; can’t suspend a GM, can you?
Note this: DL is directly involved with 2 of three issues…

Remember DL had similar insenitive remarks about JMFJ’s alma mater. DL apologized then, sincerely, and it worked out ok (with JJ signing a long term contract). Let DL keep letting us know how he feels. If he crosses the line, so be it – let him be a little human once in a while.

All I can think about is DL can’t trade the whole team, so unfortunately I think TM will lose his job if they don’t start winning within the next 10 games. TM was great when he first came here, but I think he has lost the ability to reach the players. Is that his fault – no. I just feel this team needs a major shake up – whatever it is.

The angle that is best to see the stick above the crossbar does not show the stick hitting the puck yet you can see the stick after the puck is hit and where its at. There are different angles for different reasons and that is to give a perspective of things from one angle that you can not see from another, in other words, a 3D effect. If the War Room cant use different angles to tell something that they can not see from the “conclusive” angle then the video review is useless and should be abolished.

It’s not too late for the Murray brothers to get a little classier. Remember the video of Bryan Murray cursing at Jim Fox because he didn’t like his color commentary? And every time Terry Murray sees a call he doesn’t like, he’s yelling “F-off” to the refs. Why do you think they don’t come near you for an explanation? If you want to have sway, demonstrate some respect, they’ll lend you an ear, and you’ll get to put a thought in their head that might affect a future call. But, if you keep yelling F-bombs at them, you’re right, they won’t come near you.
It’s not like I’m some puritan, but also helps the players stay focused, instead of rousing emotions at the officials who aren’t the opponents. It’s called good leadership.
No question the war room in Toronto has missed at least 3 video review calls against the Kings this season, but it’s more important how you handle it… like a survivor, not a victim.

Everyone is jumping down quicks throat about the loss. First off , we all know that only one of those goals should have been allowed. So a 0-1 loss is now quicks fault? BAH! Shame on all of you that think this way. Either blame Murray or all the forwards who cant find the back of the net. BTW Doughty played an amazing game last night.

Cant believe im saying this..but i actually miss the “win song” in the locker room after games.
Remember the vids we got to watch? OF them going into the locker room, with swagger? What happened?

@T Contreras, Feels like this all started when WESTY got beat up. Seems he lost HIS swagger and everyone else followed. Even Cliffy slowed down since his loss.

Glad he apologized. He needed to. Not for saying the call was asinine, but for making it personal, implying a conspiracy, etc.

Murphy should call Lombardi to apologize instead. I am sure they know they made a mistake.

@zdfun,
But maybe they (in Toronto) are incompetent. Maybe they’re isolating what’s happening on a given stick or goal line without the context of the flow of play and logic. I don’t know how else they can come to their conclusions unless they are truly against us.
