Kings try to get power play going again

The Kings’ power play is back on a downswing. In a six-game span from Dec. 29-Jan. 8, the Kings were 7-for-20 on the power play — an outstanding success rate, but in their last five games, they are 0-for-13 with the man advantage and have fallen to 19th in the NHL in power-play efficiency, after rising as high as 12th. A significant part of Wednesday’s practice was dedicated to special-teams work,

MURRAY: “We’ve got to find a way, here, to get some results on the power play. It can make the difference in the game. It could have won us several of the last few games. No results, so we’ll give it some attention whenever we can.”

There will be at least one change tonight, as Andrei Loktionov will play a role in the power-play unit.

MURRAY: “That was the area that we really enjoyed watching him on, in the early part of the season. His puck skills are tremendous, and he has the composure and sees the ice very well and can make some plays. The one thing, as I mentioned, is that his puck skills are so good that he can calm, settle things down just by getting away from that pressure, forcing the penalty killers to back off through strong play, a strong move, to evade that man that is coming at him. Because that’s the key guy. If he makes contact or gets the puck, everybody is going. So if you have one guy who can get away from that first man, now their reads are, `OK, I’ve got to settle, I’ve got to stay back,’ and now it opens things up to make plays, and he’s very strong in those areas.”

    wasnt our PP even worse when Loki was on it??? And with Loki having only one practice it seems even more stupid….

    These coaches are completely hopeless. You do the same thing over and over again and expect different results! That’s a wonderful way to get things going. Here’s a thought How about you try something different? How about getting one guy in the slot or another guy down low? That really lame umbrella isn’t fooling or scaring anyone. Makes me wonder what you guys do in practice. PP = No Balls

    It would for sure make a difference if their was more creativity on the power play, but Kopi and Doughty are the most creative players out there, and neither are put in a situation where they maximize their creativity.

    The problem with the Powerplay is there is a lot of creativity and no finishers. Lokti is a creative player yes, but he is not a finisher either.

    @puck73,
    right on! I’ve been saying that for a long time. I like dustin browns effort, but the guy doesn’t finish. It’s a art, luc was a finisher. not the best skater, but the guy burried the puck.

    @puck73, The PP is the only time I can see Lokti being effective, too small and soft for 5 on 5, but will help the PP. What kills us on the PP is Doughty and Stoll are set up for shots and neither can hit the net. Drew has got to stop with the big wind up, wrist it on net like JJ. Stoll couldn’t hit the side of a barn.

    @jason, This power play is Murrays system. Firing Kompon won’t change that system.

    @LAPD line, Pretty sure its Kompon running the pp… Stevens takes care of the defensive pairings…

    You can’t score if we don’t shoot, way too many passes and big windups so every defending knows EXACTLY when you’re going to shoot, for an easy block. It seems like our shots get blocked much more than many other teams. Predictability has been a huge Achilles heel. Have fun, make plays, be a pro and work HARDER Kings. Please don’t give up yet, most fans haven’t. Yet.

    Go Kings Go!

    here’s a power play the kings need, tm needs to get upset and start throwing sticks when we lose again tonight. he needs to scream at each player as they leave the ice and show some emotion. this is the hockey season, not getting a burger with something on it you didn’t order. if the leader of the team roars like a lion, maybe the team will wake up, but when you just sit there and dont do S&#T, thats what you get!

    @scumline,

    something is definitely wrong with this team right now…and it’s hard to put one’s finger on it. I guess there has been some talk on Versus about Murray being on the hot seat in terms of job expectancy–and that doesn’t surprise me.

    When there don’t seem to be any obvious explanations for this precipitous decline–I mean, these are the same players that dominated Detroit and San Jose–where does the blame fall for non-performance? If the goalie gets pulled when his team doesn’t perform well in front of him…well, maybe at some point the coach gets handed his hat….

    Murry, you suck. Obviously playing boggle with the lines, placing great players on the 4th line or players just brought up to NHL level on the 1st line is not working. How about rewarding great players with first line & power play positions? PS u suck & I’ll be shocked if u don’t get fired by the end of the season.
