Jack Johnson’s postgame thoughts…
(on the timetable of agreeing to his contract extension…)
JOHNSON: “I think the end of October. We would meet periodically. It was actually kind of fun. It wasn’t any kind of burden at all. It was just going out and playing hockey every night, and trying to play well, and letting everything else take care of itself.”
(on committing to the Kings for seven more years…)
JOHNSON: “We had talked about numerous options and situations. I have no problem committing that long. We were just trying to find something that was reasonable and fair for both sides. I think we’re both very happy.”
(on the game…)
JOHNSON: “I think a lot of guys played well tonight. We definitely needed that win. Even though, at times, it was kind of ugly, we’ll take it any way we can get it. A win’s a win.”
first?? yay
JJ for seven years!! go kings go

@Steve S., I wish more players would work out their contracts without agents.Guys like Grossman are only hurting pro sports

At $3.5m for the next three years, he makes as much as Niklas Hjalmarsson. I don’t care how many mistakes JJ makes, he’s leaps and bounds better than Hjalmarsson. $3.5m until 2013 and $5m until 2018 is a steal.

@cjms, agreed. i guess all the speculation about him being a malcontent and a cancer were wrong. good signing all the way around

I hope this ends all the speculation that JJ wants to leave, or that he doesn’t like DL.

@Dominick, I agree! Some people just need to rant about a player when things aren’t going well. That’s why we’re on the outside looking in. Congrats, JJ.

Congrats JJ and Thanks! GKG!

This is a very good contract extension for the Kings. It locks up one of their key defensemen for a long time. Now Lombardi needs to get Doughty locked down as well. And ge goes out and celebrates by playing a strong game and picks up three points.
On another note, I am starting to wonder if Jonathan Quick has Steve Sax syndrome. Many years ago the Dodgers had a second baseman named Steve Sax who inexplicably developed an issue with being able to make the short throw from second base to first base accurately. Quick has the hockey goal equivalent in his inexplicably being able to play pucks around his net accurately. I attribute three of the four goals that the Blue Jackets to Quick’s “shakiness” with handling the puck around his net sometime and his inability to keep his feet on one of Nash’s goal.
And I wish Doughty would develop a wrist shot that he had confidence in using. That windup he seems to need to take to get a shot off gives the opposing team’s defense just that extra split they need to get in the way of his shot.

@Forum67, Maybe a half swing like Luc Robitaille would help.

@Dominick, You are probably right about the Steve Sax syndrome. The Kings will have to play this one strategically and not put Quick into situations where he has to throw to first base.

@uknojata,
I disagree. I think a $4.3 cap hit is fair, especially over this length of deal. To me, he’s just starting to become the player he will be.

@Action,
I agree 100%. Fair money for a great D-man who will only get better. He’s skilled and durable – a bargain. Great signing for the Kings.

@uknojata, Not really that steep at all. At least it didn’t go the way of Brian Campbell’s contract.

@uknojata, Kyle Quincey got a 2 year 6.25 million deal,
3 million for Quincey is a dumb deal, JJ is twice the player
Quincey is…

@uknojata, wow glad your not a GM, with him and doughty at their prime, the Kings will have the best one-two defensemen in the league, they will have nicknames, they will be feared, and LA fans will love it
[Reply]
I feel bad for all of the fans who wanted to trade him for a 3rd, or whatever nonsense was being shoveled around.

Any speculation on how much Doughty will demand now? It might be a blessing in disguise that he’s in a bit of a slump right now…. no way he can demand 6M per year with his current numbers, is there?

Doughty will ask for a good deal more. If we could lock him in for $6 mil I’d think we made the deal of the young century.

I gotta agree. Getting Dewey for $6M per would be much better than the deal for Jack.

@DBKing, Unless he really wants to sacrifice for the team, it looks like his next deal might be short term. Just like the extention Johnson signed.

@mrbrett7, What do you think he is worth bud? He’s projected to score 4 goals this year.

Wow, what a great deal for JMFJ and the Kings. He’s my favorite player and I’m thrilled that he will be with the Kings for quite a while. And he doesn’t have to pay any agent fees. Very smart JMFJ!
[Reply]
Probably a very good deal. JJ needs to step up to his potential. He played a great game tonight. He should concentrate on his D first and practice his passing and attacking down the center at times. He can also play physical when he wants (he did tonight) and should do it more often.
Be all you can be JJ! Welcome for the long haul!
