    @Garrett,

I understand your point, but I also think it is tough to be taken seriously in any ranking after the real tough stretch the kings had gone through. For those who do not watch the Kings every night, it is tough to get a true idea on which team they are. Is it the one that started out on fire, or the one that could not win a game, or the team that currently looks strong again? I think 10th is pretty fair, given the up and down year so far. It is real tough to overcome the tough streaks when it comes to rankings.

@scvking, I agree with your logic, but I don’t think that’s what is factoring in here. How the hell are the Capitals ahead of us at #8?? They are 3-4-3!!! Burnside offers terrible analysis, his rankings are more of a popularity contest…

    Today is… 27 December, 2010.

The playoffs begin on 13 April, 2011.

That’s fifteen more weeks of rankings, 107 days.

No need to hold our breaths over this week’s ranking… Hey, on SiriusXM Radio HomeIce Channel 204, one of the hosts today went out on a limb and picked…

    (wait for it, wait…)
    –The Vancouver Canucks!

    I couldn’t stop laughing, for five minutes…

Unless one has a time machine, no one has even a remote clue. The major rankings changer is injury. Unless we are on the doorstep of the playoffs, rankings are only worth the laughs they invariably produce.

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, Rankings dont mean much to me look at what happened to the red wings the year they set the record for wins in a season something like 63 wins and they lost when it counted the playoffs.

    Garrett Reply:

@BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy, I understand your point and it’s valid. I also like the Canucks for a deep run… However, this is about THIS WEEKS power rankings, where the teams are right now, and right now, we’re better than 10th. Posting it was just a way of saying that LA still gets over looked – which I guess we deserve.

NHL Network played the Kings vs. Rangers regarding the first outdoor game since the 30′s in Las Vegas. There was a time (all be it when we had Gretz, Kurri, Sandstrom, Granato, Robinson, Luc and Blake) when we were considered for big events and a major market.

We were a better team last year in the regular season than that team I just mentioned record wise and yet, no love.

    Just saying….

Aactually, I’m trying to keep my calendar updated now, so I’ll know. When I had Center Ice, I used to schedule about a week’s games at a time on my DVR.

(@Rich Hammond) What would be really cool–and maybe this is too much to ask–is if the Kings site had the (legitimate) online game sources, such as Y!, listed where they have the TV listings, such as on the game schedule.

Live isn’t AS bad as Topanga, but it’s still pretty bad.

@Steve, i really hope this is a joke? first off there will only be one winter classic and it will always be in the east, and involve eastern conference teams. second the kings already have a yearly tradition of frozen fury. it’s very successful, always sells out, and there’s really no point in changing it. anyway the nhl wants to feature their best teams or rivalries during the winter classic, and somehow i don’t see the kings as being part of that

One thing that I’m sick of hearing from these PRO’s is ice condition. I know it’s important, but as an athlete, you should NEVER forget your roots and where you come from. The WORST conditions at any stadium in the league is better than 90 % of the rest of the world. You never complained about playing in your back yard, or the local garbage league’s ice, so don’t complain now. It’s really too bad that PRO’s get too used to the best equipment/conditions, because they really do lose a lot of their credibility. You NEVER see football or soccer players complaining about field conditions, they suck it up, and play with whatever elements they are givin.

    [Reply]

    pr0cess Reply:

@Drew Is Better Than You, word, and to be honest ive seen plenty of places with “good ice” have more bounces then staples. Its really only canada that thinks there ice is made of gods tears lol

    KC23 Reply:

@Drew Is Better Than You, How they can defend anything with “ice condictions” is beyond me. Both teams have to play on it so ffs, what the heck are they talking about it for?

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Drew Is Better Than You, Um…the ice conditions they grew up on playing in their backyard WERE better than what they are playing on at Staples right now.

Oh, and you ALWAYS here football and soccer and baseball players complaining constantly about field conditions. They can also do something about it. Longer cleats, etc., whereas hockey players have zero control over the soft ice surface causing the puck to bounce.

You haven’t ever played, have you?

    [Reply]

Drew Is Better Than You Reply:

@mrbrett7, I respectfully disagree. And yes, I do play, I play a lot actually. I play at both El Segundo and Panorama Ice. The ice conditions are completely different between both those places, with El Segundo being a LOT better, but still, I’m not a pro, so I don’t complain about ice conditions when I have a bad game or two, I blame other areas of my game, where as these PRO’s should be focusing on their game more and NOT the ice. Also, of course baseball players complain about the weather, because you CAN’T play that game in harsh weather. (I played baseball for 15 years). Actually, it’s not even them complaining, it’s the league that ends their games or postpones them. Soccer players…I’ll give you them, but football players DO NOT complain, and NEVER blame weather on a loss, they deal with the elements.

    [Reply]

    mrbrett7 Reply:

@Drew Is Better Than You, I guess then when the entire Vikings team complained about the field conditions prior to their game at the University of Minnesota last week, they didn’t complain. Kickers never complain about the footing or the wind for the reason they miss a field goal, or quarterbacks never speak of the weather conditions in regards to poor passes. Ted Ginn wore sleeves yesterday after stating that the last time he did due to cold weather, he funbled, he wore sleaves and fumbled, but I guess he never did complain.

What I’m saying is…they all complain. NY Ranger players complain year around about the ice surfce in NY, as it’s widely known as the worst in the NHL. Edmonton’s only saving grace is that they have the best in the NHL due to the fact they are one of the few arena’s that the only thing going on there IS hockey.

I’ve played at both Panorama and El Segundo, and the ice surface at El Segundo is not only better than Panorama (a gravel pit is better than Panoram), it’s better than Staples most days.

If your having difficulty completing a simple pass BECAUSE the ice is so bad, I have no issue whatsoever with a player pointing that out. It isn’t complaining, it isn’t making excuses, it’s a fact. Every year, the players rate the best and worst ice surfaces in the NHL, and every year, Staples is rated as one of the worst. It absolutely effects the game.

    Naturallawyer Reply:

@Drew Is Better Than You, did you see the uprising from NFL players about having to play outdoor in Minnesota on an unheated field (after the Vikings’ roof imploded)? They complained that it would be like getting tackled on cement. Must be rough. Wonder what it’s like to take a higher-speed collision and fall onto hard ice? But those NFL guys have to play a whole 16 games, and one of those is on hard *grass*!

    [Reply]

    sid the kid Reply:

@Drew Is Better Than You, you know what i was just going to point out the minnesota game that naturallawyer just mentioned, and the big uproar that the players were making about that. furthermore, they are pro’s, they are used to professional conditions, and there’s no reason why there shouldn’t be top notch ice everywhere they play. the guys doing the ice at staples have had 10 years to get it right. and they are getting paid big bucks to do it. this isn’t your local ice rink.

Hmmmm, the PP improves, We score at least 1 PP goal per game and our record goes to 8-2-1. I don’t think that is just coincidence. Let’s keep it going in SJ tonight and GKG!

    [Reply]

    kevin Reply:

@DesertKing, PP an PK two of the most important thing to have in the NHL for these reasons. 1. If the power play sucks the other team is less worries about taking those chances where a call might be made due to the fact you cant make them pay for it. 2. You can take those chances for the same reason as above they cant make you pay. These save many goals the only other thing I think is as important is face offs. You loose a face off on the power play easy 20 seconds of the power play and vise versa also face offs allow you to control the game lines changes on the road if need and allows you to set uop in th offensive zone.

IMO, this incident is just as bad as stomping on someone or elbowing the head.

No surprise the refs missed it. That “kneeing” penalty on Simmonds appears to be plenty of evidence that NHL officials just don’t know what they are doing.
