Afternoon reading: Sturm feature

Marco Sturm made his Kings debut last night, and was credited with one shot on goal and one hit in 11 minutes, 42 seconds, of ice time (all of which was at even strength). Want to learn more about Sturm? He’s the subject of my LAKings.com feature for this week, which takes a look at Sturm’s background. Drafted in 1996, Sturm became of the first German born-and-raised players to make a real impact in the NHL. How did he do it? Who did he look up to. Sturm talks about that, and more, in the feature. Thanks for reading…

@MOSH, Greene is practicing with the team as I type. Wearing the same jersey as the rest of the D. Apparently full contact is allowed.

@BrokeKingsFan, Last summer I went took my daughter to a King’s practise. Been a King’s fan since 1970 and it was the first time I ever checked it out. For me it was worth it. You get a very close look at the drills and such and it does give one a broader perspective on the life of an NHL’er.

I liked what i saw from Sturm last night. he was a little tentative at first trying to get the feel of the game but shift after shift he seemed to be more comfortable and willing to chip in! He almost had a goal or a grade A scoring chance on a rush to the net, he was just a little off. It will come though i have faith Marco, keep it up!

    @BrokeKingsFan,

Couldn’t agree more! He was in the right place just a fraction off of the right time 3 times last night.. Playing a great F3 role in the O zone. I liked what I saw last night as well… A Few more games and I think he’ll break the shell.

@BrokeKingsFan, I thought he looked pretty tenitive, but he definately can skate. He reminds me a lot of JW. Coming from Boston’s defense first system he should fit in perfectly with our style. I just have my doubts he’ll be up to speed after a 2nd nasty knee injury at the age of 32. Time will tell.

Rich, any idea what happens to the roster when Parse returns?

    BrokeKingsFan Reply:

@MR King, i would say thats anybody’s guess at this point.

    Kevco Reply:

@MR King, Parse will not be a factor this season, unless we go to conf finals. And even then, he will not be ‘game ready’, total non-impact for this season. maybe 2011/2012 will be his season to be our first line LW. Or we could get that Russian guy in a trade who’s wife wanted to move here, what was his name?

“Sturm has 234 points and 232 assists in 855 career NHL games.”

Jeez, 232 assists and only 2 goals in his career..what a playmaker..

once again a great job on your feature Rich…thanks…I’m guessing that was a lot of research with all of those German stats.

Sturm will be a great addition when he gets his legs underneath him. GKG

Nice article, Rich. I think Sturm will get his groove back soon and start lighting the lamp. I’m very optimistic about the rest of the season!

Schenn lost his #10, What does this mean?

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Saltcrust, It means he’s playing for another team, so Sturm, who’s playing for THIS team, gets to keep his number.

    KC23 Reply:

@Saltcrust, Absolutely nothing. Sturm is a free agent after this season. We have no better chance of signing him than any other team in the NHL.

    Good article Rich.

Not to be picky about the nuance of details, but as a journalist I would think you’d want to be careful of your wording.

“Germany — or, at least, West Germany until the 1990 reunification — has had its own professional hockey league since 1957, but Germany has won only two medals in Olympic men’s hockey, in 1936 (when it was a four-team tournament) and in 1976.”

Due to the political structure of the GDR, ‘professional’ leagues never existed. Just as in other former Eastern Bloc nations as well as the Soviet Union, club teams existed for nearly the entire life of the country. The first GDR club team goes back to 1951 — Dynamo Berlin, which was managed by the Stasi (East German secret police).
