Friday practice update

Jonathan Quick will get the start in goal tomorrow night against Detroit, and Terry Murray said he intends to start the game with the same lines that he used at the start of last night’s game. Brayden Schenn was in the locker room, wearing shorts and flip-flops — probably for the last time for a while — and expressed his disappointment about returning to junior but said he will play in the World Juniors. I’ll have more on that, and other notes and quotes, to come…

    What about Loktionov? Is he going to get another shot soon? I really liked his play style when he was here.

    @The Acacia Strain,

    Probably not. The team is determined to develop him as a center, and we’re pretty set in the position.

    John Quick starting? Shocker. Wonder what ever happened to that goalie prospect named Jon Bernier? I heard he was pretty good as well.

    GBOI Reply:

    @puck73, schedule isn’t hectic right now so Murray said he’ll likely stick with Bernier until next set of back to back. Not for at least another week I think.

    @GBOI, Ummm… could I love how you mention the lack of games, not the fact that Bernier has been AWFUL. Which he has. I and liked him, and was hoping for big things this year, but he’s a liability right now, and shouldn’t play until he is ready to stop pucks.

    @puck73,

    Not sure. Haven’t seen him all season.

    @puck73, He met goalie coach Bill Ranford and has been in a steady decline ever since, Quick got an independent goalie coach and is 3rd in the NHL in Goals Against, and 5th in the NHL in Save Percentage.

    I’m sure Schenn is disppointed, but hopefully he goes back with a better understanding of what he needs to do to stick in the NHL next season.

    Lets be honest guys..Schenn really wasnt quite ready..Even though he will dominate in juniors and possibly learn nothing but bad habits, its the NHL, you have to be ready!

    Not to mention, The B Wheat Kings are bad this season, so hopefully after they miss the playoffs he can go with Manch. Lokti deserves another chance, and i think he will do it. He has great numbers right now in Manch, hopefully he can light the lamp a little more. Hes my favorite!

    @Michael_DD8,
    I think he’ll have a specific agenda of things he’ll have to work on (like his skating). World Jr.s is a no joke tournament either. Being sent down with a taste from the big club will be a major motivation for him.

    As is, he’s probably good enough to compete in the AHL. Next year when he’s ready to make that jump, he might be developed beyond the AHL, and ready for the NHL full time.

    I hope to see him become the home grown sniper we have all wanted, but he’s not there right now. Being sent down’s not all bad. I think it could be a positive for Schenn, and the future of this franchise.

    I still say we go and get Kessel and Kaberle from the Leafs. I’m sure we can get them even though it would cost us Schenn and a couple of prospects or picks. Those two would elevate us to yet another level of play. And if you could add Sturm…..

    Jay GoLAKings Reply:

    @boxtime17,
    I remember that day when the Kings picked Schenn, Brian Burke was so pissed. lol

    He would give alot to the Kings to pick up Brayden Schenn.

    @Jay GoLAKings,

    Agreed! here’s my lines with those guys..

    Sturm Kopitar Kessel
    Smyth/Poni Stoll Williams
    Brown Handzus Simmonds
    Clifford/Westgarth Lewis/Zeiler Richardson

    Doughty Mitchell
    Kaberle Scuderi
    Johnson Greene

    @boxtime17, Burke is in a dealing mood I’ve heard, but we’ll see.

    boxtime17 Reply:

    @KC23,
    exactly! And we know he wants Schenn…AND we know there’s disappointment with Kessel of late.
    We have the prospects AND the cap space that they need to reduce as well. As much as I like Schenn, we could really REALLY improve with the likes of those two players. Then if we end up with Sturm on the left side of Kopi and Kessel on the right? Wow…..I wish we’d look at something along those lines…

    [Reply]

    crashin' da net Reply:

    @boxtime17, We should pursue this heavily. We actually have some leverage in this one as Burke wants Schenn. We can use some of his current assets.

    Boxtime17 Reply:

    @crashin’ da net,

    I know…. I’ve been hoping to see something come up soon in regards to this type of deal..
    I know these two guys from the Leafs and if we can pick up Sturm (if he’s healthy) for the left side….I don’t think we should wait until they are gone…if we can make it happen sooner then they can get some chemistry going in time for the playoffs…DL are you out there?

  7. I'm Just Saying" says:

    Is there a reason we did not play Schenn that extra game before sending him down. If he allowed 9 games why play him 8? Now if he gets traded can he play that 1 extra game for a new team before their decision is made? Just wondering
