As was posted this morning, there is not a completed trade between the Kings and Boston for Marco Sturm. There have been talks, for days, but a trade has not been completed, and it’s increasingly unlikely that one will be completed. Dean Lombardi’s only comment is a general one, that there is “no trade.” As I posted earlier, Sturm’s medical history probably comes into play here. I’ll post more if anything else comes to light…
FINALLY nothing big still waiting for that big trade during the trade deadline maybe we can use Sturm in it but this can hold up and fill in that left wing hole till thnen….i HOPE

I think DL is waiting the 2 weeks to see his recovery before signing the dotted line. If DEAN is any bit skeptical about his recovery, then he should, by all means, wait.

Once “real trade rumors” become live, DL will not pull the trigger.

@Harry,
yeah…well, do you want a sturm with one knee? he may be a great skater. but try that on one leg.
can’t we all just agree that it might be smart to consider this without the knee-jerk (get it?) reaction?

If Sturm going to play like Handzus did in his first season with the Kings because of the injury Sturm suffered is similar to that of Handzus. What ever happened to Corey Elkins?

@THEROCKNROLL80S,
Elkins is in Manchester, tied for second on the team in points. Im guessing he’s playing 2nd line center. He’s got 16pts in 22 games and he’s a +10.

It would be a waste of precious cap space if Sturm just ends up sitting. I agree with waiting.

@tornado12, Sturm wouldn’t count against the Kings’ cap since he’s on LTIR…

Well he would prob be activated before he were to “fail” again.

@deadcatbounce, My response was to the assertion that he would be wasting cap space. If the Kings were to trade for him as-is, then he would not count against the cap due to the fact he’s on Long-Term Injury Reserve.
However, I wonder if the NHL does not allow players on LTIR to be traded, thus the issue with completing the deal. If this is the case, Boston cannot trade him since they would have to clear an equivalent amount of cap space just to activate him. Seeing as how they activated Savard, they’re not going to move ~$3 million to activate Sturm. At this point, their only option would be to waive him.

@Carey, even if he passes his physical and is reactivated, but plays poorly and ends up being a healthy scratch, he would count against the cap. Just too risky and DL is anything but.

@tornado12, A lot of assumptions here. Lombardi clearly is willing to take the “risk.” It’s a conditional 5th round pick. That is not a big risk.

Carey Reply:
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:05 pm
@ashykins, It is the last year of his contract. It’s not a big risk for the Kings at all. If he comes in a plays well, they give up somewhere around a 2nd or 3rd pick. If he comes in and sucks, gets hurt again, etc., they only gave up a 5th round pick.
Carey Reply:
December 2nd, 2010 at 5:06 pm
@tornado12, Also, keep in mind that with the Kings sending Schenn down, they cleared another $3 million in cap space. They have plenty of room to make another move if need-be.

How would that impact Bostons activating Savard ? Is that on hold as well ?

Michael_DD8 Reply:

@Jim In CM,
No, Sturm is on LTIR, so they have space for Savard, just they cant activate Sturm.

Thanks for clearing up my confusion…but what happens if there is “no deal” and sturm remains a bruin? Stays on LTIR ?
again, thanks

@Jim In CM,
Yes, he still as 2 weeks or so until he is ready to come off. Bruins are in the situation where they ‘must’ move someone.
TSN is rarely wrong, and they have it up as the headline story and say that the trade will be official today. Since DL has been known to keep the truth to himself until the trade is official, i’m going to have to believe TSN….again.

To be fair, everybody was throwing out conflicting stories. Not one single source got it right, with regards to the Kovalschmuck saga.

@LomitaKingsFan,
I don’t think TSN ever said exactly where he would end up, they made assumptions, but never clearly said where he was going. Today they are making it clear with the Sturm trade. If they are this convinced, saying it’ll get done tonight, then they obvioiusly know something.

@Stuart, Same here. Does that mean they progressed to the point of having him examined and the exam didn’t go well? Did another team up their offer?
How depressing, he wasn’t going to be a game breaker, but would have been a nice addition.

@Stuart,
He probably means, as with any trade, the longer it’s taking to get a deal done the more likely a deal has a chance of falling apart. No trade was going to happen until he passed the physical by team doctors, so if the physical hasn’t happened yet then it’s all just speculation. Hell, it’s all just speculation anyhow until the trade is made official or it’s announced that the two teams are no longer in trade discussions for Sturm.

I wonder if we’ll see one of those “conditioning” assigments to their AHL affiliate first. At least DL is being cautious and prudent even if it is as rumored to be just for future considerations.
[Reply]
DL can jump off a cliff. He needs to make a splash now and not when we sink to the bottom of the Western Conference. There are major holes to fill with the Kings and by adding Marco Sturm isn’t going to help. Come on Dean, your track record won’t be too impressive if you make the playoffs one year and fail to make it the next. All these Insider fans can’t be wrong if we are all saying basically the same thing. Go on Dean, shake it up a bit, I dare you!!!

I like this move. Has a ton of upside, and really, no risk. I’m not of the opinion that we should be in a panic mode and need to make something big happen NOW! The season is young, there is time. DL is shrewd, he sees what’s going on around the league and buys his time. Right now, Toronto is being blown out 5-0 by Edmonton in their own barn! Calgary is circling the drain. These two teams made drastic changes in the off season and it’s not working. There’s the possibility of a big shake up, and I’m coinfident DL will make the right moves. The sky is not falling, our record isn’t terrible. If we came to the current record with more of a balance in the win/loss column, instead of a big win, then loss streak, I don’t think there would be as many comments calling for drastic changes. I think it’s time to step back, and take a breath. I’m confident things will get back on track very soon.
