Anze Kopitar’s postgame thoughts… (on the video-replay calls…) KOPITAR: “Those types of things will happen throughout the course of the year, throughout the course of the game. We have to fight through those non-calls, calls, whatever the case may be. Unfortunately for us, it went that way.” (on whether he thought Smyth had a high [...]
Smyth postgame quotes
Ryan Smyth’s postgame thoughts… (on his late non-goal…) SMYTH: “We shot ourselves in the foot early on. We had chances early on that we should have buried, so it shouldn’t have come down to that. Give them credit. They battled hard, kept in it and found ways and Spezza scored a nice goal.” (on whether [...]
Postgame response on review
Mike Murphy, the NHL’s senior vice president of hockey operations, told Jim Fox that video-replays officials had “no view available that would allow them to change the call on the ice,” which is why the no-goal, called on the ice with three seconds left, held up. Neither Ryan Smyth nor Terry Murray aggressively contested the [...]
FINAL: Senators 3, Kings 2
The Kings appeared to have tied the game with three seconds remaining, but after a lengthy video review, officials determined that Ryan Smyth knocked in the puck with a high stick. The Kings outshot the Senators 30-19 but lost for the fourth time in five games. More from the locker room to come..
Senators 3, Kings 2
Jason Spezza gave the Senators a 3-2 lead with 8:41 remaining in the third period. Spezza carried the puck, with speed, up the left side of the Kings’ zone, made a move around defenseman Matt Greene and beat Quick from a tight angle with a wrist shot.
End of second: 2-2
Shots are 19-15 in favor of the Kings through two periods. The Kings will be on the power play for the first 1:50 of the third period.
Kings 2, Senators 2
Ottawa tied the game with 56 seconds remaining in the second period. Daniel Alfredsson stripped the puck from Jack Johnson in the Kings’ zone and took it behind the net. Alfredsson centered to Milan Michalek, who beat Quick from close range to make it 2-2.
Kings 2, Senators 1
The Kings’ first power-play goal in three games gave them a 2-1 lead, 7:52 into the second period. Justin Williams skated in and took a sharp wrist shot from the high slot, and Ryan Smyth, running traffic in front of Leclaire, tipped the puck into the net.
End of first: 1-1
The Kings nearly scored a go-ahead goal in the final minute, but officials ruled that the post had been dislodged before Wayne Simmonds shot the puck into the net. (It also appeared that Matt Carkner deliberately pulled the post away) Shots were 12-8 in favor of the Kings in the first period.
Kings 1, Senators 1
The Kings tied the game with 3:43 remaining in the first period. Ottawa’s Jason Spezza attempted to pass the puck out of the Senators’ zone, but Anze Kopitar picked off the pass, took a couple strides and beat Leclaire with a high wrist shot from the middle of the right circle to tie the game [...]
Senators 1, Kings 0
Four seconds after a Kings power play ended, the Senators went on the power play and took advantage. The Senators won an offensive-zone faceoff and the puck reached Kovalev in the right circle. He broke his stick on the shot, which beat Quick at the 10-minute mark with something of a knuckleball shot to give [...]
Scouting the Senators

Don’t let it slip away
The power play is an issue, and top-line scoring and defensive scoring can be discussed, but those are things that tend to ebb and flow. One eye-raising trend, though, during the Kings’ recent wobble, has been their tendency to lose leads. The Kings are 7-0-0 this season when leading after two periods, which is nothing [...]
Canada’s favorite son
Every time the Kings play in Canada, the scene is repeated. The local media — often including a half-dozen camera crews — jockey for position in front of Drew Doughty’s locker before Doughty is even off the ice. Doughty is certainly a favorite son, not only because of his NHL success but because of his [...]
Bernier: hometown hero?
About that goalie plan… Terry Murray had announced, a few days ago, that Jonathan Bernier would start in goal Wednesday, near his hometown of Montreal. Then, after Jonathan Quick’s outstanding effort in Saturday’s shootout victory over Boston, Murray indicated that he would be open to altering the goalie plan that he had he put in [...]
Murray vs. Murray
As mentioned yesterday, it’s Murray vs. Murray tonight, as Kings coach Terry Murray “opposes” his older brother, Ottawa general manager Bryan Murray. The brothers grew up in Shawville, Quebec, which is approximately a 75-minute drive from Ottawa, and there will be some Murray family and friends in the arena tonight. They won’t include the Murray’s [...]
Restoring the power?
The Kings enter tonight’s game having been blanked on the power play in back-to-back games. They have failed to score on any of their last 12 power plays. It’s similar to the late-November power-play dip the Kings had last season, in which they went four consecutive games without a power-play goal. They responded to that [...]
Monday skate update
The Kings won’t make any lineup changes tonight, Terry Murray said after the morning skate. Jonathan Quick will start in goal against Pascal Leclaire. Murray talked about the Kings’ need to simplify the power play and get shots from the blue line. A highlight of the morning was the appearance of Marcel Dionne. I talked [...]
Morning in Ottawa
Sort of makes me wish I had brought golf clubs (and that I knew how to play golf). The morning skate will be underway in just about 90 minutes…
Manchester Monarchs update
The Manchester Monarchs, the Kings’ AHL affiliate, had their four-game winning streak ended today in a 4-1 loss to Providence. Oscar Moller’s first-period power-play goal — with assists from Brayden Schenn and Andrei Loktionov — tied the game 1-1, but Monarchs goalie Jeff Zatkoff was pulled from the game after the Monarchs fell behind 4-1 [...]
