Given a night of reflection, it seems Terry Murray did indeed see the need to move around forwards. Here’s how the Kings are skating this morning…
Brown-Kopitar-Williams
Smyth-Stoll-Lewis
Clifford-Handzus-Simmonds
Richardson-Zeiler-Westgarth
King/Schenn
Matt Greene is not on the ice, so we’ll have to see if it’s a “rest day” or something more than that.
Oh thank god, Kopi’s got someone skillful.

He’s a 1st line momentum KILLER and now I’m afraid AK feels he needs to shoot everytime he gets the puck because he knows his linemate will not give it back…it’s hard to play any sport with someone you feel doesn’t play a good TEAM game. I would bet that to his closest friends, AK complains about being on a line with DB. To all of you who are going to say “how do you know how AK feels about…blahblahblah” I say STFU!

I think Murray’s idea is, Brown and Kopitar need help in the worst way, so let’s put the Kings’ MVP, Williams, on the line; meanwhile, in order to keep the second line “together,” put Lewis in Williams’ spot and hope he can do a good Williams impression. Their abilities have a lot of overlap, and Lewis has been playing well.

We think to highly of the talent we have in our system right now. we have read one to many press clippings on how good our young kids are and that may be true one day but right now we are floundering and dont have the kids in the pipeline right now to fill those needs. So the qestion is what are we doing? Do we wait another couple years for devolpment or do we try and win every year like every team should. Last nights performance should have set off red flags , fire alarms and dogs barking. We lost (Correct that) we got shut out by a very questionable defensive team. I just dont understand why Murray says we played a good 60 min. We could of won this game. TM has the style to keep every game close, but losing by 1 or 4 goals is still the same in books…A LOSS…

Ill tell you why… if we put smyth/kopi/williams all on 1 line. we have 1 scoring line, and 3 lines all of which would seriously lack skill.
atleast with smyth on line 2, you can count on him and stoll playing their hardest for each other. Think the lewis move to RW line2 will have the same energy and explosivenets as it has with williams at RW. Just going to have to count on stoll and smyth being the finishers on that line.

Also with williams on RW, you can expect to see the puck on williams/kopitar’s stick into the zone, instead of brown’s careless play.
Brown IMO can be best used for that 1st line being a smyth type player…. planting his ass infront of the net, and cleaning up the trash… let kopi/williams handle the puck moving and perimeter play.

The most telling thing of Rich’s post is the last line: King/Schenn. Holding these two on the roster speaks directly to Lombardi. King just doesn’t belong up here. Nothing personal, but he’s not good enough right now. Schenn? You better figure it out Dean. He stays or he goes. Keeping him around for pro practices and no game time does him or the team little good. This team, the one that plays on Staples Ice, needs to feel like you are going to support them. You brought King up but won’t let Schenn play? Time to put on your man pants Mr. GM.

@VanKingsFan,
Keep him in the lineup and take out the 4th line center. He can still take faceoffs when needed. It’s not perfect but what is? I mean the guys are in a goal scoring draught. Schenn is supposed to be the 2nd or 1st line center of the future and is a scoring threat.
Right now that’s what’s needed in the lineup. I give Stoll a lot of credit for his run early but nobody on that line is doing much.
Again…not perfect but lets see what Schenn can really do and he has one more game before they have to make the choice.

Bill M. Reply:
November 30th, 2010 at 12:18 pm
@VanKingsFan, Actually, I would move him to the third line. Stoll is relatively solid defensively, and Handzus this year suddenly looks like he has been Glued, Stapled, Duct Taped, and Welded to the ice. Handzus is in a contract year and he is not impressing. Since he is our oldest center, he is showing his age, and his contract is up, and they are LOADED at center far more than wing, I can’t see Handzus getting resigned, in which case, might as well trade him and get some value out of him rather than lose him as a UFA.
Stoll will be on the Hot seat next year…but by the time he is gone, they should have both Lokti and Schenn ready to go.
The only problem with Stoll is faceoffs. He’s our only good faceoff man. But that’s a coaching problem. TM needs to get the rest of the team decent in the faceoff circle. It’s true that Stoll is a genius in the dots, but we shouldnt rely on one guy being good at faceoffs, and we definitely won’t win that way. The solution to the faceoff problem is not Stoll, it is a team effort to get better in the dots. Case and point – half the power play goals allowed in the slump, came off set plays on botched faceoffs in the defensive zone. Take away the PP goals scored off faceoffs, and we probably would have picked up a point or two during this slump.

@Bill M., I disagree with all of you about Hanz. Seems like everyone who wants to call out a player for not Scoring goals or making plays, really don’t understand all the roles in the NHL. Hanz is a shutdown player, who has been doing a really good job with two rookies on each side of him. Manner of fact, the Hanz line has been our best line in this slump. They are keeping the play in the offensive zone creating chances and most importantly, keeping the other teams skilled players off the score sheet. Also Hanz is teaching Clifford and doing a great job at it. Heck it seems like Hanz is teaching the younsters more that TM.
Calling out Hanz is crazy.. His job isn’t to score goals, it’s to shutdown other teams players! Call out the top 2 lines if you want… Call out doughty, Johnson, Kopi, Smyth, Brown….
I disagree with the Hanz comment. Hanz is way better at shutdowning players than Stoll. Look at last night Stoll’s line couldn’t do anything against Selanne line…

The revolving door from “within” will continue because no matter what DL wants to do, he will do nothing, because AEG will NOT allow him to trade for a bigger contract. It may be true that the team is 12 mil under the cap, and that’s about where they will stay because AEG will not spend the money. Contender status is good enough for ownership. They have sold out about every home game so far and that’s all ownership cares about. I drank the kool aid too this year, but it is obvious that for right now things will remain the same. I am not for them trading key roster personnel or top prospects right now, but I’m afraid they wouldn’t even trade marginal prospects or mid-range roster players right now for a veteran goal scorer if taking on that player means adding money to the payroll.
I will continue to be optimistic and hope that getting Mitch and Poni back will get them back on track. There was nothing wrong with this team 2 weeks ago. So I guess the question is, is it the injuries or have the players quit on the coaches for some reason?

I like JJ but you have give up something valuable in order to get value in return. The Kings could get a proven goal scorer for JJ and it would fill a huge void and it wouldn’t be devastating to the team. Martinez can fill the void left by JJ and there are more puck moving defensemen developing in our system.
I hope the Kings do not settle for another injury prone or underachieving player. I would rather they leave the roster intact and work thru this slump. I know they are struggling but this is a solid team.

I think breaking up Kopitar and Brown is a must. They just dont work well together.
I would roll lines like this:
Smyth – Kopitar – Williams
Brown – Schenn – Simmonds
Clifford – Handzus – Richardson
Lewis – Stoll – Westgarth
Zieler/King – Scratched
This would get Schenn into the lineup and playing with better players. I always though Schenn looked out of place playing on the 4th line, but when the powerplay rolled out he always had chances and had a presence around the net. This would also leave us with 4 semi balanced lines.

That sounds good in theory… not sure I could envision Stoll playing on the 4th line though. He needs more minutes than that.

@SoftDumpnChase,
Switch Stoll and Zus, and you might be on to something. I’m still not sold on Schenn this season. 7 points in 7 games with Manchester is pretty good, but I would have hoped he would have been more productive down there, especially considering who he was playing with.

Uh…. oy.
Smyth-Stoll-Williams needed to be broken up. The magic had ended (although not sure you can truly blame them, the whole team sucked to find offense the last four games).
Wasn’t expecting to see Lewis as the 2nd-line RW, but nothing else has worked… hopefully a game against the Panthers can turn things around.
And WHY is Schenn not in the lineup? Either play him or send him back to Juniors. He needs ice time, either 12 minutes with the Kings or 22 minutes with… whoever it was he played for, I don’t remember (London or Brandon?) Him skating with the team doesn’t do him any good… especially when the skating sessions aren’t doing any good for anybody else, either.

Now’s the time to put Schenn back into the lineup. And Dwight King is off the four lines, which is halfway to where he should be, so Terry is making progress in properly assessing the players. I wouldn’t even rule out calling up Loktionov. We need someone with something that resembles offensive skill.
