Jonathan Bernier’s postgame thoughts…
(on the loss…)
BERNIER: “We were a step behind on the plays, and they’re a good team. They have skills and they were making plays in our D zone. Like I said, I think we were just a step behind. And myself, I think I have to be better.”
(on how he felt before the game, in his hometown…)
BERNIER: “Obviously nervous a little bit, but I knew it was coming up. I felt pretty good.”
(on the buzzing the Canadiens did in the zone…)
BERNIER: “Yeah, they did. They came out really strong. You’ve got to give them credit. They battled hard and they were winning pucks in our zone. That’s what happens.”
(on the traffic he faced in front of his net…)
BERNIER: “I think that’s one thing we’ve got to maybe work on. I just feel that they were good at getting front of the net and staying there.”
The NHL can be awfully humbling, dont ya think Jon?

this ain’t the AHL son learn how to fight traffic in front of you, do that or go back to he AHL and be the goalie of the year again i can careless! you cried for so long that u deserved to play in the nhl level, well its been 7 games now!

no worries JB when i grow up i wanna play like QUICK too
[Reply]
Lets not hang this one on bernier. This game could have easily been 8-1. So many point blank chances.
That said, we may have to lean on quick a little more as we go through this rough patch.
When is Willie coming back again?
[Reply]
You think you have to be better? Cmon JB, you can’t be letting in 3 goals per game man…
Granted the defense in front of you sucked balls, but some of the shots you’ve been letting in have been weak.
[Reply]
Yeah because Quick has been stellar on this road trip right? They’ve been losing as a team this whole trip, you can’t just try and hang them on Bernier.

@Oz, It’s not JB’s fault alone, but he is not allowing the team to get into the game. He doesnt seem to have the ability to steal a game, or come up with a momentum changer save like Quick does.

I don’t fault Bernier,, this call is on coaching and management..you never play a kid in front of parents and family…who runs the show the families…he was in over his head, end of discussion

@Harty,
Yea Terry should have made more saves from the bench it’s all his fault. There is nothing a player wants more than to play in front of family and friends to show what he can do. If I have a player that does not want that challenge then I don’t want that player. Great players always want to play……… end of discussion

A lot of people here are quick to jump on the college-aged rookie goalie for having a bad day at his (new) job rather than on the men in front of him who completely failed at a job they’ve held for years.
I don’t understand why so many Kings fans take such glee in pointing the finger at a prospect in his first handful of NHL games. He’s had a bumpy ride, and he may or may not pan out as a great goalie, but why are people already treating him like he’s Cloutier? Give him a chance to develop and stop expecting him to play like Brodeur in his first year in the nhl.

@puck73, On the fourth goal he wasn’t even close to being ready for a shot. He is out of position alot. Quick is second in the league in goals against. Why is he not playing every night. This is a bunch of crap. Terry Murry is blowing this big time. Let quick play and get hot again like he was early. Bernier hasn’t been even GOOD in any of his starts that I can remember.

@brian spain, Quick is not playing every night because he played every night last year, and Quick sucked in April. Last year, the Kings didn’t blow any third period leads until April…when they did so four times…all at home…twice in the playoffs. Goaltending was a big part of that. Check the tape.
Quick will be better in April if he doesn’t play every night now.
Of course Quick has been the better goalie so far. No disputing that. But if you’re complaining about Bernier not being good, you better have written a novel about each other player not being good, because Bernier is the least of the problems. Nobody has been good the last few games.

I think you guys are all being unfair to JB. In the losses he took this season he sure didn’t get a hell of a lot of help from his “teammates”. Sure there were several goals that should have been stopped but like tonight he faced what? 41 shots? What kind of help is that? My biggest complaint against him is the rebounds he gives up but he didn’t do that tonight. Tonight the Kings let the Canadiens dance around them on their way to the goal. Could we have won with Quick in net tonight? Probably not.

@Goring 19, The Kings are definately struggling right now,no question about it. I didnt think we were winning the Stanley Cup when we were 12 and 3, nor do I think we will finish in the cellar because of the way we are plying currently. Its a long season and there will different twists and turns and ups and downs as we go along. Heck, our roster may look dramatically different as we go along, who knows, but a couple of things seem clear currently…The Kings miss Mitchell, Poni, and Parse. And #2 I agree with most people on this site that Dwight King does not belong on the top line playing with Kopitar..He is not ready, nor qualified at this time to be playing with Kopi and Brown.

@puck73, definitely King does not belong on the top line. If anything, I’d put back the Kopitar-Williams-Smyth line back together for the time being just to get something going. I’d predict were going to have a blowout game with us being on the right end soon because lets face it, the Kings are due for one.

@puck73, You guys are fast to forgive Bernier for stinking up the place in Montreal. But are fast to condemn King for being on the first line. Give him time to adjust to the NHL. The game is much faster in the NHL compare to the AHL. Dwight King is a big power forward and I have been impressed with his play so far. The guy that I’m not impressed with, is Drew Doughty. I don’t know what happened to this kid but he is not playing up to his potential, the same can be said for Matt Greene.

@brian, I will tell you this..If I am trading you a former #1 draft pick and a probable franchise goalie that you are going to have for the prime of his career then these are the names I wanna here, Eric Staal, Ryan Getzlaf, Zack Parise, Bobby Ryan, Phil Kessel. In other words, guys that are 27 or under. You do not trade young franchise goalies away for 33 year old Jarome Iginla..END OF DISCUSSION!

Tonight is a different issue where the team in general sucked, but I mean, like in San Jose, there were easily some stoppable shots and shots that big goaltenders tend to stop(AKA Jon Quick). I recognize that it is his rookie year but I expect you to take initiative that good goalies do make saves with screens in front of them, and you are expected to be a top-end goalie, and you need to show it.

@Kingsation8, Terry Murray on Jonathan Quick, Nov. 30, 2009:
“This year, his game has been good. There were times, in games this year, that I think he’d like to have a couple of those goals back, but that’s part of the process of young players, young goaltenders in particular.”
Quick let in some easily stoppable shots last year (in fact, quite a few of them), but you give him time and he develops into a more solid goaltender. He’s much better this year after a year of experience. Why would Bernier be any different? Nothing wrong with having two great goalies. Just give the guy some time. He’s played behind a horrible team the last couple games.

@Naturallawyer, Ahhhh, I see, they set Quick all season so they can find out if Bernier is an NHL goaltender, then if they happen to make the playoffs, they’ll play Quick. nice. The Kings don’t have two GREAT goaltenders right now,. they only have an excellent to outstanding goaltender and that is Quick.

Last year I was a big Bernier supporter and was looking forward to seeing him become the #1 goalie. This year he hasn’t looked the same, I would say that the D has let him down a bit however I didn’t like his comments after tonights game calling out the D.

C’mon people, our issues right now go way deeper than our back-up goaltending. We could have 2 Quicks and we’d still be in deep trouble. I (as well as the rest of you) could make a list a mile long of our problems at the moment that are completely unrelated to our goaltending.

I must admit that I was wrong. Last year, I would tell anyone who listened that Bernier was the next Martin Brodeur. I was mad the Kings didn’t use him against Vancouver. However, several key points here:
1. The team’s problems began when Mitchell and Poni went down, especially Mitchell.
2. Bernier has had to adjust to playing infrequently. This could be a contributor to his current huge slump.
3. Don’t give up on him, and trade him. That would be a horrible past Kings management move.
4. Here’s something no one’s talking about. What has happened to the superstar play of Drew Doughty? His play this year doesn’t even compare to last year. Is it possible he’s still suffering effects from the concussion?

Bernier however can’t score goals and the Kings only scored ONE tonight. They’re not going to win a lot of 1-0 games and if they expect Bernier to shut the other team out, or Quick for that matter, to win games…not gonna happen.
