Ryan Smyth’s postgame thoughts…
(on his late non-goal…)
SMYTH: “We shot ourselves in the foot early on. We had chances early on that we should have buried, so it shouldn’t have come down to that. Give them credit. They battled hard, kept in it and found ways and Spezza scored a nice goal.”
(on whether officials said it was a high stick…)
SMYTH: “Yeah.”
(on the two calls that didn’t go the Kings’ way…)
SMYTH: “That happens sometimes, and you’ve got to fight through that and overcome those types of things. It’s frustrating when they are pretty obvious. That’s what they were saying, that our video coaches were saying, that it was a good goal. So it’s frustrating, but we’ve got to overcome those type things.”
(on whether he thought it was a high stick…)
SMYTH: “Well, when I tipped it I brought my stick back down, so I think it was pretty close. I thought it was a good goal. … It would have been great. Three seconds left. It would have been a nice turning point, for sure.”
The officiating (all around) has been spiraling down for the past three seasons. More and more, bad calls and sometimes terrible ones are deciding goals and games. The NHL better get its act together and fast. Few things will destroy its credibility faster than this.
With that said, s*** happens. Kings had plenty of chances to win this game and AGAIN gave up the lead.

Who was the ref that made that call on the ice?

Props to Smyth. That’s the attitude you have to have as a player. For them, it does no good to claim they won but the the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it. (So they don’t have to play better?) They have to see that they needed to be better than they were.
For us? Yeah. We know they got jobbed.

@TiredOfIt, Don’t blame him. Blame the people who pilfered his ice-level views, or the on-ice officials.

@TiredOfIt, I think he is, but he’s keeping a lid on it, and looking at it the healthy way (“what could I have done so it didn’t come down to that?”)

@TiredOfIt, that’s what i love about hockey. having a bad day, i like to get on the ice and take those slappers! i’m sure Smyth will be taking it out on the next game if the refs don’t try and take it away from us then also.
It was a goal. I agree with the steady downward spiraling of NHL officiating. Too many rules, too many officials, and the players can’t play or police themselves like they used to.

I agree with smith we should have buried the early chances.

this loss stings. you can’t just pull the net off when the other team is about to score. that non call drove me crazier than the one at the end.
they have to win in montreal… something they can’t do. phoenix will beat edmonton tomorrow and move into 1st… let the slide begin

@kevin from toronto,
damn right! should have been a penalty shot….
you’re in toronto…why couldn’t you do something?

Lots of bad calls and things that should have gone our way. If we had played a better game all around we would be complaining as much

@Kings x, Yeah, we would. I watched a football game, a couple weeks ago, that my team won. I was pissed for hours after that game because there were so many bad calls. I hate bad officiating, even when it doesn’t change the W/L outcome. I even hate it when the team benefits from it, because it screws up the whole tempo of the game.

no way the ref should have waved that off in the first place!!!!

Id like to know if Toronto made a decision or if they just used the decision made by the offical because they didnt have a conclusive angle to make a decision?

@murphy, The call in Toronto was “the play stands as called on the ice.” That means they had no proof it was wrong. I support THAT part it.

WAR ROOMERS PULL IT OUT!!!!!

The issues I see is that the ref’s are now becoming looking to the video review to make the calls for them. When you watched the ref’s response to the call – you could see him saying – the video review will make this right. It’s a cop out, either you believe in your call or you don’t and it looked like he didn’t have much faith in his call.
Be a MAN!

@Bryan,
Maybe he did get it right. One thing for certain…it was close enough to demand a second look.
If its that close with just seconds left and the game on the line why not look at it? It cuts both ways.
