Mike Murphy, the NHL’s senior vice president of hockey operations, told Jim Fox that video-replays officials had “no view available that would allow them to change the call on the ice,” which is why the no-goal, called on the ice with three seconds left, held up. Neither Ryan Smyth nor Terry Murray aggressively contested the call after the game. More reaction to come…
NHL is a joke. They need to have standard angles in all NHL arenas as a rule. I can’t understand why they dont already.
[Reply]
Key word being “AVAILABLE”.
[Reply]
I will only be angry if a definitive view shows up late tonight or tomorrow confirming the goal was good…
Remember what happened last year in Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh video producer lost his job over a bad call with video proof held back from the War Room to review.

Referees:
Tim Peel, Eric Furlatt
Linesmen:
Derek Nansen, Bryan Pancich
There’s only so much Toronto can do to overrule their calls. I pretty much hate them right now.

I’m mad at the refs but I don’t think it’s a conspiracy so much as incompetency. I don’t even think Toronto was particularly happy with upholding that call at the end, frankly.
But Carkner’s net-shove, that’s the one that irks me to no end. He’s right there, staring at the puck about to go in, reaching out to hook his hand around the goal post. It’s inexcusable to me that a ref misses that. At the very least, it’s delay of game.
I guess I have an easier time rationalizing bad calls away when it’s only one bad call instead of two. I know these things happen. But dang.
I only hope the Kings come out roaring next time and win by such a wide margin that no one can mess with it.
The best view was showing the stick just above the goalies arm…the goalie was on his KNEES guys. Use common sense. That’s a HORRIBLE call.

@John, Unfortunately without almost straight on view level with the cross bar, it’s all but impossible to definitively tell the level of the stick. In a situation like this the league is always going to default to the judgment of the on ice official. To do otherwise without conclusive evidence would weaken the presence of the referees. Yeah, it sucks for us, but it’s also an understandable decision by the league.

Murray needs to show some passion here and raise holy hell about these calls. If nothing else maybe it will fire the team up a bit. Worst game I have seen Jack Johnson play as a King. Sit him for a game to think about it. Would Muzzin really be much of a downgrade for a game?

@LAPD line, For us, we know they got screwed…but TM can’t go off like that. He needs to let the team know they had to play better, and if you’re him or the players, you have to keep your chin up and not make excuses–even when they know they got jobbed. That’s part of sportsmanship.
Again, for us…it’s different, but for them….

@LAPD line, I completely agree – Once in a while, the team needs to see the coach back them by aggressively going after an official. Its not going to overturn the call, but it sends a message to your team. To me, tonight was a perfect opportunity.

That was the second horrible call in this game by the same ref. The first horrible call was on the Clifford/Simmonds “No Goal”… Where Carkner clearly pulled the net off with his right hand. There wasn’t even a penalty given on that play. The rules says if a player Intentionally pulls the net off and the puck enters the net, a goal can still be awarded. But it’s not reviewable…
two horrible calls by that ref tonight!

Refs are biased for Canadian teams. No way that on ice official could see Smyths stick was above the crossbar however he knew it would be impossible for Toronto to over-rule the on ice call. Murphy had no guts to over turn call.

How come we can all tell and they can’t?
The ref on the ice is not too competent: he took away two goals in calls that went against the grain. On the first goal I was looking whether the D was pulling the net off. Why don’t the refs look too as it unfolds? This has happened other times when I notice the D being sneaky. Then on the last goal, normally it would be good from ice view and then they could double-check to be sure. He over-reffed negating something good.

In my eyes, Jack Johnson has never been a true King even all the way back to his first season with the team. I see him as an egotastic dude that doesn’t really want to give his 100 or let alone play in LA. THAT’S MY TWO CENTS!

@SixSix, JJ had a lousy start to the year and a worse game last nite. he needs to exhibit some of the grit and nastiness that was promoted by his cheap shot in some college game when he was traded here. I do get the sense its JJ 1st and team second in his view. that being said i’m not saying trade the guy – he’s the type of person you need in the playoffs. he isnt afraid of the spot light, in fact i think it makes him a better player ( like when doughnuts was injured). i just think he needs his ass kicked so his head will pop out and get fitted on straight with team first priorities.

@carol vadnais, ffft! Yeah, right! From where I sat that was a tough save, and also from where I sat, it seems like they played well enough to win, minus the way Greene played that third goal. The Jack Johnson screw-up was half on him and half on the no-call penalty that should have been interference or hooking, depending on what you want to call the corkscrew move these days.
[Reply]
If the people in Toronto can’t review the play to make a definitive call on the play, what’s the use of a “war room”? NHL should have it’s own cameras in certain strategic locations because of this debacle. And whats with that Simmonds non goal. The pucks laying there with a wide open net, its going to go in, the defensman knows it, he’s sliding by and blatantly, deliberately grabs the post to pull the net off the moorings to avoid a goal. At best, I thought there was a delay of game for this kind of thing or did I miss something? We still shot ourselves in the foot regardless, with the mistakes made tonight but the outcome should have been much different.
[Reply]
What a BS call!! The best view showed Smyth’s stick parallel just under his jersey logo. His knees are slightly bent so there is no way the stick could have been higher than the crossbar. I would hate for these numbsculls to be accident investigators or reconstructionists. Their failure to use reference points makes going to replay useless unless there is a perfect angle.
No need for last second goal if JJ isn’t playing with his head up his A.
[Reply]
I would like to know what did they see to say that the goal was knocked in with a high stick? Every angle I saw looked to show at least a couple inches below the crossbar and stick was level. With the first look it showed it below and I never saw anything that was close to being over the cross bar. Of course you’ve got Toronto looking at it, and an Eastern Canadian team . . . there’s no way it’s a goal.
[Reply]
Simmonds was robbed. The net did not move until the puck passed the line.Smth was robbed, too. LeClaire was on his knees and Ryan’s stick was parallel to his waist. If Peel and Furlatt come to staples, we should throw rotten fruit at them.

@poe, It clearly moved before the puck crossed the line–they replayed it several times and it was obvious. However, the bastard PULLED it off deliberately, and that was also obvious. Guess that’s at least a penalty…maybe an automatic goal, depending on the specifics in the rule book.

I keep thinking Carkner learned that move watching footage of Luongo during last year’s playoffs. I hate getting robbed the same way twice.

That’s a ridiculous excuse. This is not an unsophisticated league. There were sufficient/available angles to see that the stick was at waist level…certainly equal to the cross-bar or lower. Smyth didn’t knock it down from up in the sky, he batted at it/chopped at it to bring it down into the net. I’m not Mike Murphy but I’ve followed hockey for 43 years. Its pretty clear that it was a goal…and that is NOT because I am a Kings fan. Also earlier in the game, when the net is yanked off its moorings, it should have been a penalty shot. Its time that there is some consistency and backbone in the league. Murph should know better. That was a travesty.
