FINAL: Senators 3, Kings 2

The Kings appeared to have tied the game with three seconds remaining, but after a lengthy video review, officials determined that Ryan Smyth knocked in the puck with a high stick. The Kings outshot the Senators 30-19 but lost for the fourth time in five games. More from the locker room to come..

@Nick in 318, To be honest, they made the wrong call on the ice both times, and it was difficult for Toronto to do anything about it. The first time there was nothing Toronto could do, and the second time, they had to have a better view to overturn it, but it certainly doesn’t seem the blade of Smyth’s stick could have been over the crossbar.

@What’s the frequency, Kenneth?, Blade above the crossbar my foot. The only thing that really matters there is the shaft of the stick.

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

We know there was nothing above the crossbar, but even if the Toronto guys wanted to believe it, they can’t prove it. It was the guys on the ice.

    USHA#17 Reply:

    @cjms,

Objectively (Huh! At this site?) it was close but appeared good.

They’d have to look from two vantages. One showing the height of the goalies head which the stick appeared to even to or below.

If the head was even or above the crossbar then IMO no goal.

Wonder if a head shot angle was available.

  4. FM3 says:

I dont know how they could determine that it was above the cross bar. I bet they couldnt see enough to overturn the call on the ice. Refs screwed up twice tonight and cost us a win.

And the stick one was seriously a 50 50…we saw TWO ANGLES. of probably 10 Toronto has. It was close…very close…you look at Smyth…stick is just above his belly button..he is probably 6’4 or 6’5 on skates…a goal is a 5 by 6……I mean if his stick is tilted up it’s..to me..not all the inconceivable that it was too high.

@Jay, the call on the ice should always be that a goal is scored and only video could overturn the call.

    [Reply]

    Quisp Reply:

    @Jay et al

The problem is that the rule book is at best ambiguous about who has jurisdiction on such plays. The rules say, (1) the ref has final say on everything, and (2) if the play is referred to video review, video review has the final say, yet (3) the ref can use video review to make his determination, yet (4) per “2″ he doesn’t have final say then, and (5) video review always reviews all goals and potential goals anyway and reports its determination to the scorers’ table.

Also, the rule does not say that if the video review is inconclusive the call on the ice stands. In fact, if the ref asks for the opinion of video review, the video judge MUST make a ruling, according to the rules. He can’t just say, “can’t tell, whatever you think is best.”

Also-also, if the determination is that the point of contact with the puck is AT the level of the crossbar, then it’s a good goal.

Also-also-also: look where the ref was when he made the call. he’s behind Smyth in the corner.

Also-x4: It doesn’t matter what the original call is. The ref is NOT, as many people seem to think, locked into his first call. He is free to change his mind at any time, after consulting with video review. The rules never ever ever say that if he washes out the goal he can’t reverse himself.

Canadian bias. The first dis-allowed goal was a perfect example. The refs lean away from the Kings on judgement calls. And why are Harry and Whiskey paired together? Plus/minus doesn’t tell the whole story. Every time the Sens set it up in our zone and got good pressure, it was Whiskey and Harry. Not to take away from what they offer, but they get exploited on the road. Other teams see them step on the ice and they send out their top line or some grinders, then the get time/pressure in our zone.

I don’t know what to say! We got robbed twice tonight by the same ref at the same end of the Ice. The first “no goal” Call on the Clifford/Simmonds goal where Carkner pulled the net off with his right hand and then that Goal by Smyth. Same ref that said Carkner didn’t pull the net off, said Smyth Hit his good goal in with a high stick. Which everyone clearly could see his stick was the same level as the Sens goalie’s arm (Which was well below the crossbar).

    That’s a tough game there…

I am wondering about if when Poni comes back, can we move him to the #1 line with Kopi and Brown? I think Clifford has been doing a great job in the shutdown role on the third line. I would like to see this when poni Comes back..

Am I the only person who feels this should be the way the NHL acts with plays like this:

If the puck goes in the net, then it’s good. Use video replay for any controversial plays, and only call off the goal if there is conclusive evidence it was put in illegally.

I’m tired of games, ANY games, being decided because the ref on the ice decided to call it “no goal” rather than a “goal”.

And in 2010, how do we not have good enough technology to where we can eliminate any “inconclusive evidence” scenarios? Put a camera on the dasherboard at the goal line, or something.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Kevin Y, Well, as a philosophy, it’s difficult, but usually there’s a lot more time left in the game than three seconds, and you don’t want the only goal scored, or the winning goal in a 2-1 game to be a bad call.

Frankly, I’m not to crazy about the rule that disallowed the goal in the first place. It seems to me there should be more to it than just the height of the stick. One thing I don’t want is for the rules to get so twisted they resemble the NFL rulebook. I think that’s one reason why (and I earnestly believe this) the NFL replay is so much worse than the NHL replay.

    [Reply]

  104. Kevin Y says:

But one thing: anybody who says that Toronto is BS’ing the Kings is ridiculous. Remember, Game 3 against Vancouver, everybody was saying the exact OPPOSITE! And they got the call wrong IN OUR FAVOR!

The NHL has no bias towards anybody, because they KNOW there’s much more to lose by skewing the results any one way than there is to gain by calling it right. And with the uncertainty of the CBA coming up soon, and the NHL still the lowest of the Big 4 USA sports, they simply want the best, and FAIREST, product out there.

I don’t think there’s anything on their agenda about screwing up a Kings team that’s good enough to overcome a tough loss like this! Fact of the matter is, the Kings are a good team. These kinds of things happen to everybody. Edmonton got screwed last night when a puck that went through the photographer’s camera “hole” in the class was called for delay of game. Anaheim scored on the ensuing PPG.

Remember, there was a play that occurred earlier this year, a controversial goalie interference call, that prompted one of the GMs to propose a challenge flag system. EVERYBODY has the breaks go against them. In ANY sport. The great teams are the ones who don’t let that get to them. The Kings are gonna have to be just that team, and a victory in Montreal would make us forget about this tough loss.

    [Reply]

    What's the frequency, Kenneth? Reply:

@Kevin Y, It’s not Toronto. It’s the guys on the ice…and it’s not a conspiracy (unless someone kept a replay view hidden from them.) It’s simple bias.

He will help establish some cycling down low which is lacking on that line. He is a guy that kopi could make better and make that line a real threat. The stoll line should not be touched. Way too much chemistry. The fourth line with richie And Lewis and westy could actually turn into a line that chips in offensively. Now if DD could get into shape and JJ could check his ego. I don’t know is a healthy scratch or less minutes appropriate ? The lines look promising. But…
