    I think they need an on ice seminar on how to shoot a puck during a PP.

    @Mesquite Smokie, Yeah if all we have is a soft wristshot from the point and Kopi stuck on the boards we might as well ask the refs not to bother calling penalties against opposing teams

    @Kings Fan in Temecula,

    The only advice I can give that might help out.

    The only thing I wind up hearing from either Bob or Nick, depending upon how I get to watch a game, is:

    Doughty to Johnson. Back to Doughty. Slides it over to Kopitar. Down to Brown. Back to Kopitar. Across to Johnson. Over to Doughty. To Kopitar, Back to Doughty, Shoots, Blocked, Cleared.

    And usually by that time the Power Play is over and that is assuming they can get set up.

    @Mesquite Smokie,

    We have already seen the answer for our PP this year. Turn Kopi loose and let him go to the net. JW has done this susccessfully and when Kopi has done it, we have either scored or had a great scoring opportunity. The comment made in an earlier thread that our PP is completely “predictable” was right on the money. We have some very talented players who need to be turned loose and sent towards the net.The fact that we win games despite this problem shows just how good out players, coaches and administrators are. A few adjustments and ……..

    [Reply]

    Mesquite Smokie Reply:

    @DesertKing,

    Turning Kopi loose is Kompon’s job and apparently there no one is communicating. This is why the PP is a travesty. There is little communication between the #1 PP unit and Kompon. The umbrella is not working as well as it should and the only answer is to stop using it. The PP is broken and needs to be fixed.

    A lot of other times the Kings had an effective PP they were actually shooting and hopping on rebounds before the opposition. This year, there are “no” shots.

    11 for 76 on the PP They should be better than this.

    rontheking Reply:

    @DesertKing,

    you have to get the opposing pk to start moving by moving yourself. pass the puck and then skate toward the net through the defense–or something…movement creates problems for the defense…otherwise they are just going to sit in front of you and block your shots and clear it. just my opinion….

    Sorry for the repost but I had internet connection troubles, and by the time it went through, the previous post was old.

    Kopi, Doughty, Simmonds…our stars are playing solid hockey. but they just are not playing with that FIRE!

    I wonder. Has a taste of the playoffs turned us into a team that struggles to focus in the grind of the regular season? Maybe our stars really won’t come to life until the season is on the line.

    If that is the case, well it’s not great…but I’d rather be the playoff sleeper than the presidents trophy winning playoff choke artist.

I thought this game showed reasonable improvement (especially in context of the back-to-back roadie after 3000 miles travel, after the last few let-downs, against a pretty good team, in their building, etc., etc.) I look forward to seeing them look even better in two nights.

  7. Bonvivant1 says:

    The Kings are a fantastic team. They are a contender and they play in the Western Conference. There is so much parity in the Conference and to be tied after 19-20 games for first in the Conference with the Red Wings is something special.

    There are very few teams besides Detroit and Washington that can overcome shortcomings (i.e. injuries, poor power play production, poor penalty killing etc.) Every team goes through lulls. We went through a lull and recovered. Let’s hope we can follow up this game with another streak.

    [Reply]

    Mesquite Smokie Reply:

    @Bonvivant1,

    They have not fully recovered from the lull. They need to get back to holding opponents to fewer than 3 goals. In the last 5 games the Kings have given up an average of 4.5 goals. Before the game against San Jose, The Kings gave up less than 2. Something needs to be done.

    I would love to see a streak start up. Perhaps the Kings can get it going against Ottawa, but Ottawa migth be looking for some retribution. They have been bitten on offense. Ottawa has been outscored 17-4 in their last 3 games. They might look to use the “struggling” Kings as a means to get back on the right side of the score sheet. This looks to be a slugfest.

    [Reply]

    mcsorleyfan Reply:

    @Mesquite Smokie, I’d love to use the struggling Sens to get our scoring differential straightened back out!

    [Reply]

    Mesquite Smokie Reply:

    @mcsorleyfan,

    I’m with you. I would love to get that scoring differential back to a less than 2. That might take a few shutouts, but if history has taught me anything, that won’t happen. It will happen over the span of at least 4 games. The Kings need to hold the next 4-5 games to only one Goal Against.

  8. Mesquite Smokie says:

    Just did some number crunching for the Kings and their Power Play:

    No of games > 1:1 Shots per power play: 12
    No of those games with at least one PPG: 8 (10 total among those games)

    No of games <= to 1:1 Shots per power play: 7
    No of those games with a PPG: 1 (2 man advantage)

    My conclustion for this is that if you actually shoot at the net you have a greater chance of scoring a goal.

    So far this season 563 shots on goal. 114 of those shots on the Power Play. They need to shoot more on the Power Play.

    Mesquite Smokie Reply:

    @KC23,

    That is the point I am trying to make. We need to improve it and I think the best way to do that is to shoot more. 8 out of 12 games where we actually average more than one shot per power play, we actually score more. I would like to see that.

  13. Nyck says:

    Interview with Jamie Kompon: (just in case anyone cares)

    Overall, are you pleased with the 0 for 10 powerplay execution in the past two games?

    “Yes. It’s not like we’re 0 for 11, or something really concerning like that. I think we have to just keep doing what we’re doing, which is keep the puck along the half boards, pass along the perimeter, and try to shoot pucks, directly into the penalty killer’s shin pads.”

    Do you see the powerplay, as being a key reason for the Kings lack of success in the last 3 games?

    “Sorry I didn’t hear the question but yea you know it’s really no big deal. Dean is so nice to me, and we’re nice to each other, and I just walk around behind the bench alot, we don’t call time outs ’cause Terry doesn’t really like me having more than 15 seconds with the players because I might draw up the world’s best powerplay scheme and then they may fire him and appoint me as Head Coach.”

    What exactly did you tell the guys during the timeout in Boston, when you were about to go on your fifth unsuccessful powerplay that could have potentially ended the game?

    “I told them what I always tell ‘em, “shoot the puck…especially if it’s from the outside, and we have no traffic. The last thing we want, is for a goal to be disallowed because of an interference. We have Drew back there, who’s just been amazing. I think he has 15 goals already this year. We like to have him and Jack stationary on the blueline, so there is no chance for passing lanes to open up, and when we turn the puck over, Boston can catch two of our point men flat footed, and it would be exciting. Ultimately, we feel most comfortable, chasing the puck around in our own zone on the powerplay, it’s really just a thinking outside of the box scheme; so far, so good.

    I need to defend Jamie here though… the boys have to execute. Kopitar especially has to shoot the puck. The 2nd PP line has been executing fine, they just haven’t got any through. The 1st unit has simply not executed. Period.

    At the end of last year, I believed JK was not using guys to their full potential with his PP schemes (Although he had an entirely different Jarret Stoll on the point last year). THis year, I believe the 1st unit is just not executing gameplans. I believe TM should step in and change the PP personnel a bit IMHO. It’s not all on Jamie right now.

Worked his ass off to be better. Great to have two solid goalies but play the hot tender. Many goalies used to play every game and be good. Marty played every game, hasek, Roy. . . Quick is solid and young, he can do it. Berny is def a great goalie but quick is on fire now. Team is playing in front of him.

  16. #1faninVegas says:

    Alright, the voice of reason from Vegas is here with a calm prevailed head! LOL!

    First things first, these has been repeatedly asked to me and everyone else. Even I asked these questions and thought it through for a very LONG time!

    Do we need a SCORING LEFT WINGER for the top line? Answer can be summed up simply with one word: NO! We have the talent if it can be utilized properly.

    Should we make a trade for Iginla? Answer to that is NO! Calgary would be in the drivers seat for that and we would end up losing alot of depth!

    Well, we need scoring help should we trade? NO, reason is I have seen teams trade and it ruins the chemistry and they faulters like a bunch of hienas!

    Well, than what do you suggest Mr. Voice of Reason in Vegas?

    Simple ~ Kings can’t produce on power play, by the time this road trip ends… FIRE JAMIE KOMPON!! Get a new PP coach in there with some better ideas! ((Even with out Mitchell, we are still pretty darn good on the PK, thanks to a new PK coach in John Stevens))

    Next: Wait until the trade deadline, by that time, NJD are going to be running wild like Chicago did during the off-season, so with that, DL is in charge of a trade to get Parise. I believe that is the best option for a trade/deal to be made. I dont want us to give up too much depth that we worked so hard to make into pros. I feel if we were to do a trade now, we would have to give up so much, that would cost us in the long run.

    So, final analysis: Fire Kompon, bring new PP coach in and see a change. Wait to do a trade til the deadline, which would help us better in the long run.

    If our PP starts to click and works magic and produces, we can win practically every game. We are scoring better 5 on 5, we are doing great on the PK, we just need magic on the PP to solidify us as a top notch team.

    Tonight, was a good game, sad to see a 3-0 lead take us to the SO, but we still got two points, so two things happend tonight.

    1~ We ended a 3 game losing streak

    2~ We got two HUGE points.

    Hopefully, we can continue feeling good going into Ottawa and start a new winning streak of 10 games or more. GO KINGS GO

    [Reply]

    Mesquite Smokie Reply:

    @#1faninVegas,

    Excellent analysis.

    The Kings might not need to trade at all though, if they can just stay healthy they might not need a Parise to carry through to the postseason. The injuries to Mitchell and Poni will just prove the depth the Kings have is enough.

    As far as Kompon, I completely agree. He is completely ineffective. If he wants to keep his job he needs to just shut up and coach at the TSC and work on set plays off faceoffs on the PP. This PP needs to shoot and stop just passing the puck around. So far in the first 1/4 of the season the Kings have done nothing on the PP.

    Look up 7 initial posts and I number crunched the Kings PP woes. If they just put the puck on net more, they will get better and score more. In the actually 8 games total where they actually scored a PPG they are 7-1. Now translate that to the rest of the season they might just finish at a record comparable to last year or better.

    [Reply]

    #1faninVegas Reply:

    @Mesquite Smokie,

    Agreed on the shooting the puck more on the Power Play, but when Kompon takes the headphones before the 3rd period, or even talking to Foxy and Bob, does he at all tell them, that he told the club to shoot more? I havent heard it! So maybe it is time for a change!

    This game was as big a game as they’ve had all year and they responded with a W. There’s no negative in that at all.
    Boston seems to be the best of the east along with Washington. They walked into their building having played the night before and took 2 pts.
    It may not have been pretty, but it sure was gritty.
    You knew Boston was going to get back in that game at some point. Quick was exactly what they needed from an elite goalie. He was solid throughout. There are certain games during the season you’re going to need your goalie to win one for you. He won that game for the Kings last night and it couldn’t have come at a better or bigger time so far.

    Relax with the fire Kompon crap. If that was his only job on the team you might have a point, but its not his only job and you know that..or at least you should. Fire an asst coach while the team’s in 1st place? Do some of you ever read what you post and think back to how ridiculous it sounds?

    On to Ottawa and hopefully another 2 pts.
    Go Kings!

    @nykingfan, You have a point about not overreacting about Kompon but dude, cmon, you and I both know that you cannot keep going 0 for whatever during an NHL game and expect to win games. Quick really did bail this team out tonite and lets be honest, if this team can score 1 or 2 goals on the PP in games they would be vey difficult to beat. As it stands right now, the PP looks as predictable and misguided as I have seen. Kompon either needs to make adjustments during the game or he should be relieved of PP responsibility because any PP that has Kopitar and Doughty anchoring it should look more intimidating then this one does.

    You’re talking about a small window of the season. Look at where he had the PP last year?
    It’s a long season. Every PP goes thru peaks and valleys. We’re sure in a valley right now, but they’ll breakout at some point and hopefully in a big way.
    Their 5 on 5 play has been outstanding and the pk has been well above average overall.

    @nykingfan,

    Ok, maybe we are overreacting a bit, but still, it is mainly his job to handle the PP as Stevens is the PK. Stevens brought our PK up a notch, so Kompon, needs to step up his game, and help the Kings not look so predictable on the PP! Tomorrow nights PP will look exactly like the nights before. He seriously needs to tell them to SHOOT!! I want to hear him say it on TV before I change my mind on getting a new Assistant Coach. He really needs to jump the gun a little bit, and force the boys to looking like the talent they are!

    @#1faninVegas,
    say it on tv?
    Would you also like him to give you a detailed strategy of how the PP should work so every other team in the league can find out as well?
    Relax and wait until the final numbers are in before jumping to conclusions based on a 1/4 of the season.
