Mitchell update

Willie Mitchell was not available for comment after the game, and Terry Murray was typically vague about the nature of the “upper-body” injury, but just to quell any speculation, the injury did not take place as a result of a hit to Mitchell’s head. Murray claimed to not even have seen the injury take place.

“It was right down, on my right, in their zone, in the second period,” Murray said. “So it was on the other side of their bench. I don’t have much of a view there, unless I glance up to the clock.”

    Just curious, what is up with these vague injuries reports_ Upper Body, Lower Body. Why can they just say what happen?

    This all started a few years ago with some teams and now every team does this, why?

    It is freaking annoying and I find it insulting to the fans.

    @Seattle757, Agreed! It used to just be a playoff thing, now it’s done throughout. The paying fans have the right to know!

    @Fletch, Why? The only people who have the right to know are the player themselves, the coaching staff, and the management staff. Beyond that, nobody has the right to know.

    To give the bloggers something to write about…

    I think CBGB already has reported that mitchells head fell off.

    but in all reality its a wrist injury.

    @Seattle757, It’s not about keeping the fans in the dark, teams just don’t like publishing specific injuries because they don’t like the idea of someone targeting that player’s injured area. For major injuries it’s impossible to conceal but for minor injuries where a player might leave a game after taking a puck to the hand or something they don’t want to disclose “hand injury” if the players going to play with the injury the next game as he may find himself the target of a few extra love-taps to the glove or maybe the other team will pressure said player with the puck more in hopes that he turns the puck over due to weak hand strength. Its just something where you don’t want to expose potential weakness of one of your players and it’s best to be in the habit of doing it regardless of what the injury is.

    @Seattle757,

    I agree, however, what I heard is if another team finds out what the injury was, they tend to play on that. Meaning, if they report, Mitchell suffered a right shoulder injury, and other teams heard about it, and he played the next game, the opposing team would take liberties at his right shoulder to injure him more seriously! Its just what I heard.

    @Seattle757,

    It started in the playoffs when players would play through an injury, the teams didn’t want to specify what the injury was so the other team couldn’t focus on it.

    @Seattle757,

    They do that to confuse scouts and try to keep them on their toes. They don’t want to divulge where the injury takes place right away because if it is a minor injury but requires the play to sit out the rest of a game, it might give the opposing players something to look for to aggrivate on a later game. If you just say UBI, that could be anywhere above the waist. You don’t really know. Same with LBI.

    I am annoyed with it too, but I see how if a scout for an opposing team is interested in the affairs that occur during a game against the team you may be going up against tomorrow or the next day, it becomes more of, “Okay. Rewind tape, Where did this UBI/LBI occur? Can’t really tell. Crap! No useful intel.” It keeps the opponents guessing.

    @Mesquite Smokie, Well if the opposing teams do target a player’s arm, wrist, etc after coming from an injury, then they should be charge with an intend to injured and kicked out of the game!

    @Seattle757,

    You would think so, but usually it’s suttle. A little extra tap to the hands or ankels, things that already happen 20 times a game and don’t get called.

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @Seattle757, I have played for 25+ years. If I know an opponent has a sore shoulder, I’m aiming for that shoulder. If I know an opponent has a bruised knee, first thing I do is take a slap shot, right at that knee.

    The goal is the win the game, not be best friends on the ice.

    It’s not your right, it’s not my right, it’s not the media’s right to know ANYTHING about any players injury, period.

    I’ve played games with sprained ankles, and I will actually walk into the rink, limping on the OTHER SIDE, so that nobody knows. The only people who know are my teammates so that they know I may have some trouble moving to my right or left, whichever side the injury is on, so they can help cover me.

    mrbrett7 Reply:

    @Seattle757, So should they tell you, the fan, that he has a broken hand, or a sprained wrist, so that when he does come back, the VERY FIRST THING AN OPPONENT DOES IS TARGET THAT SPOT?

    Please…you do NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO KNOW, Period.

    For those of you who DVR’d the game, the injury occured@ 17:52 in the 2nd. Willie spins to avoid a check along the boards, then Hornquist checks him. He looks to favor his left arm, and skates th the bench with it hanging at his side.

    Hope its minor. Mitchell has been a rock on D. I think the steadiest of the Dmen to this point in the year.
    I would also like to say JJ with another solid game. Its about the 7th game in a row he has turned in the Olympic stud JJ performance.

    If they tried to make a go of it, it’s got to be a bad bruise, or a sprain of some sort (just guessing though).
