Not sure who should make the call but someone should be demanding that ALL these guys wear the best protection possible. If the helmets aren’t good enough that I would dedicate a chunk of change and have my own study done to maximize the protection.

    If it were up to “the code”, helmets would not even be worn. It is so ridiculous. There is enough risk of injury in hockey as it is.

    I HAVE A QUESTION FOR QUISP, RICH, OR ANYONE WHO CAN ANSWER IT (In that order J/K )

    RE: Schenn (Or Clifford)

    If we were to keep Schenn (Or Clifford) past 9 games and lose the year on his ELC, would he then be eligible to go to Manchester? Or is it an age thing and he would still be sent back to junior. Thx!

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @Cynic,

    I remember someone asking that a couple of weeks ago. I believe the answer is no, because the problem comes down to their age. They’re either here on in junior.

    @Cynic, Obviously a very good question since I’ve been wondering the same thing.

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    [Reply]

    SplattDaddy Reply:

    @Dominick, Schenn would have to go to Juniors because he’s too young to play in Manchester at this point. Schenn could join Manchester at the end of the season only after his junior season is officially over……I think…

    [Reply]

    Cynic Reply:

    @SplattDaddy,

    Well now wait a minute…

    Didn’t Voynov play for Manch last year as a 19 year old? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vyacheslav_Voinov

    Now he played in the Russian SuperLeague as a 17 & 18 year old, so being that he was in a ‘Pro’ league already, did that make him eligible to go straight to Manchester instead of Junior?

    If true, it’s not entirely about age then. This is where it gets confusing for me.

    Moondoggie Reply:

    @Cynic, Age thing….They’d go to juniors no matter what due to age. I don’t think they have to clear waivers tho….

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @Moondoggie, I wasn’t sure on the waivers. I guess it’s just a matter of burning his ELC, because we could bring him up, or down at will then. I think sending either Clifford or Schenn down wouldn’t be the end of the world for either of them. It would just mean more playing time till they come back up.

    [Reply]

    Mike L Reply:

    @Cynic, Voynov played in Manchester because he came over from Russia. The rules don’t apply to European players who already played in the “pro” leagues.

    But if there North American and are from Junior they have to either be there till they’re 20 then go to the AHL or stay in NHL over Juniors

    [Reply]

    quisp Reply:

    @Cynic,

    1) When Schenn or Clifford plays in his 10th game in one season, it triggers his ELC, regardless of whether or not he is eventually sent back to juniors.
    2) Triggering the contract doesn’t have an effect on being eligible to play in the AHL.
    3) The reason that Schenn and Clifford can’t play in the AHL (until their junior seasons are over — like Clifford and Muzzin last year), is that the CHL has an agreement with the NHL that prohibits juniors-eligible players from playing in the AHL. It’s the NHL or back to juniors.
    4) This agreement applies to players who were drafted out of juniors (i.e. were already playing in juniors when they were drafted by the Kings).
    5) It does NOT apply to players who were drafted out of Europe (or for that matter out of any league that’s not the CHL). This is why Loktionov and Voynov were eligible to play in the AHL at 19.
    5a) it’s not about whether he (Loktionov, Voynov) was “pro” or not in Russia. It’s about the fact that he wasn’t playing in the CHL when he was drafted. For example, Kitsyn is playing in the KHL right now, but he’s juniors-eligible (in fact he is playing in the Subway Super Series).
    6) None of this has anything to do with waivers. Schenn and Clifford both are waiver-exempt.
    7) last point: since they both have contracts, there’s no reason Clifford and Schenn can’t be assigned to their junior teams and then recalled, or play for another month and then reassigned. Just because their ELC kicks in doesn’t mean they can’t still play in juniors.

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @quisp,

    I just want to clarify your last point. The only way they can be recalled from juniors on a non-emergency basis is if their ELC kicks in. If they are sent back before their 10th game they can only be recalled on an emergency basis; i.e the way Schenn was last year.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @AZ King,

    What constitutes “emergency” basis?
    I would think an injury, but I could see that being abused.

    AZ King Reply:

    @nykingfan,

    That’s exactly what it is. I believe though it can only be used for one game.

    quisp Reply:

    @AZ King,

    Of course I could be wrong, so factor that in. But my understanding is that if a juniors-eligible player does not have an NHL contract by the time the NHL season starts then he must return to juniors and cannot re-join the NHL club until the junior team’s season is over (i.e. he’s lost for the year). However, if the player does have a contract, then the player can be recalled at any time.

    For example, Oscar Moller played 20+ games in 2008, burning a year of his contract, and then was returned to juniors for the WJC in December. He was then recalled in January (but was injured).

    The agreement between the CHL and NHL is not available for us commoners, unfortunately. But my (possibly flawed) understanding is that the agreement doesn’t care about whether the NHL SPC is triggered or not.

    It would be nice if this matter could be definitively settled one way or another by someone who actually knows what’s in the agreement.

    Until then, I’m going to stick with my interpretation, which is that recall from juniors is possible as long as the player had a contract before the season started.

    There is language to that effect somewhere (in the CBA, I thought, but I can’t find it now). I will poke around later, or maybe someone else knows what I’m thinking of.

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @MiniKing,

    That’s kind of the reason for the baseline tests. You have to be symptom free for 48 hours before you can even take the test, and then actually pass the test before the doctors will clear you for full action.

    Bottom line is no one is going to take chances with a concussion.

    [Reply]

    nykingfan Reply:

    @MiniKing,

    I don’t get the feeling that they’re rushing him back. If that was the case, why not bring him back earlier?
    If he’s healthy and ready to go, we do need him.

    Check out this link.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19fvaVXNSFI&feature=player_embedded

    1) Obviously that hit was very late.
    2) Colesy is a brusing power forward looking to put a hit on DD any time he can.
    3) The play is in front of him the whole time, he may be focusing on the puck but DD is in his vision the entire time.

    DD can be politically correct in public, but privately we need atonement. Dress Westgarth next time (no use for a speed team like Carolina), and let him and Clifford go to work!

    [Reply]

    KC23 Reply:

    @ToughD, Interesting view of the play. Hadn’t seen that version of it before and it does make it clear he lined up DD for the big hit. That was no accidental, “they just happened to turn into each other” deal.

    And I think it suspendable. So there.

    paul Reply:

    @JT Snow,
    Glad you posted this view.Great to have you back doughty.

    ToughD Reply:

    @JT Snow, If you believe collisions like that happen all the time then you must mean competively via video games. Collisions happen frequently, but not cheap shots because they generally get dealt with.

    So are you claiming that Cole was unaware of who he was coming into “incidental” contact with? Get real dude. Our best player…he surely had enough time to at least try to avoid him. Suspension? Probably not. But that cheap shot needs to be dealt with. Too bad that was Richardson and not a “action first, questions later” guy like Clifford or Westy. In Richardson’s defense, even at his view it probably appeared incidental. Why don’t we wait and see the next time Colesy rolls around?

    ToughD Reply:

    @ToughD, We don’t play Carolina again this season, but still doesn’t mean traditional payback is out of the question. With Carolina going nowhere this season (pretty much guaranteed with Joe Corvo on D) and Cole a UFA next year, he is probably attractive trade bait. Fingers crossed.

  45. Cynic says:

    GOT IT!

    http://proicehockey.about.com/od/collegeandjuniorhockey/f/nhl_juniors.htm

    This answers my question well and simple.

    If Schenn/Clifford are returned before their 10th game, their NHL contract does not kick in until next year’s training camp. If they play a 10th game, their NHL contract (ELC) kicks in that year.

    IF THEY ARE SENT DOWN AFTER 10 GAMES: They go back to Junior, unless they have completed 4 full seasons of junior, upon which they can go to the AHL or elsewhere. The ELC stays active and you lose that year.

    A bonus from this is if the ELC kicks in after ten and that junior eligible player plays 40 games, he will be eligible for free agency a year sooner as you need 7 NHL seasons before you can become a UFA. This would make it possible for an 18 year old rookie to be a UFA at 25.

    I asked about Voinov and I guess there are exceptions for Euros as in the case of VV where he was 19 and playing with the Monarchs. I’m guessing it was because he played in a pro league already and that gave him exempt status.

    So, bottom line, DL needs to really think these things through to keep them both here. He could lose a year of bargaining power with both of them if they both stay.

    [Reply]

    quisp Reply:

    @Cynic,

    see my response above.

    it’s not true that they “lose the year” if they are sent down. that’s only true if they don’t have contracts. they have contracts.

    voynov’s thing is due to not benig drafted out of the CHL. not because he played “pro.”

    [Reply]

    Cynic Reply:

    @Cinic

    The age AHL thing only applies to the CHL and their draft. VV wasn’t drafted or playing for a CHL team so he could go to Manchester underaged. The same is/was true with Loktionov. He was drafted from Europe and then played in the CHL but since he was drafted out of Europe he didn’t have to play in the CHL therefore after that first season in Windsor he went to Manchester as an underaged player. Therefore if you are drafted out of the CHL you have to return to jr’s otherwise it doesn’t apply. The same could be said of college players that turn pro.

    @54FIGHTING,

    Yeah, that’s what Q was telling me. Seems like there is a bit of a benefit as far as freedom to dictate your career (A la Loktionov choosing to go to junior and Voinov not) by being drafted out of Europe than out of the CHL. I get why the CHL does what it does, but it almost seems unfair. Kind of gives Euros an edge to break into the NHL sooner and more hassle free than the North American kids.

    Is that good for the game?

    Thank goodness! I have been waiting to see him back with his team. Even though they are doing very well with him being absent, it’s not the same without him. We are gonna win win win! Kings Forever! <3 Becca
