Coyotes 3, Kings 2

The Kings made it 3-2 with 2:41 remaining in the third period. Brad Richardson shot from the right circle and Bryzgalov made the save. Wayne Simmonds, parked in front of the net, had the puck deflect off his right skate and into the net for Simmonds’ second goal of the game.

End of second: Coyotes 3-1

The Kings played a better second period, but even that included a shorthanded goal against. The Kings kept pace with Wayne Simmonds’ goal and outshot the Coyotes 13-6 in the second period.

Coyotes 3, Kings 1

The Kings got on the board 8:20 into the period. Brayden Schenn made a nice outlet pass to Wayne Simmonds, who beat two Phoenix defenders in the neutral zone, went in alone on Bryzgalov and scored on a backhand shot to make it 3-1.

Coyotes 3, Kings 0

The Kings had a chance to get back in the game with a power play early in the second period, but instead gave up a shorthanded goal. Derek Morris pushed the puck up ahead to Andrew Ebbett, and the Coyotes’ speed led to a 2-on-1 break. Ebbett kept the puck and beat Quick with a [...]

End of first: Coyotes 2-0

A bad period by the Kings, in almost every measure. They were outshot 16-7 and took the period’s only two penalties. The only positive is that they killed both penalties, moving to 23-for-25 on the season.

Coyotes 2, Kings 0

Phoenix wasted little time in taking a 2-0 lead. At the 7:24 mark, Quick was unable to cover the rebound of a Taylor Pyatt shot, and Lee Stempniak beat Kings defenseman Jack Johnson to the puck at the front of the net. Stempniak poked the puck into the net for a two-goal lead.

Coyotes 1, Kings 0

The Coyotes put pressure on the Kings in the early minutes, and it paid off 4:30 into the first period. After Quick had to make an athletic save, Ed Jovanovski controlled the puck just inside the blue line and ripped a slap shot. Lee Stempniak was one of the Coyotes running traffic in front of [...]

No suspension for Cole

Kings general manager Dean Lombardi said he was informed that Carolina’s Erik Cole would not face any discipline for his hit on Drew Doughty last night… LOMBARDI: “They viewed it as incidental contact, that these were two guys turning up ice and that he [Cole] wasn’t necessarily trying to finish his check, he was just [...]

Wounded but dangerous

To catch up on today’s news and notes, you can check out my LAKings.com notebook by clicking here. The Kings are without Drew Doughty tonight, but the Phoenix Coyotes are a shorthanded bunch as well, without captain Shane Doan (suspension) and center Martin Hanzal (lower-body injury). The Coyotes are expected to go with Eric Belanger [...]

Progress…sort of

The Kings’ power play didn’t really take a step forward Wednesday, but at least it shuffled its feet a bit. The Kings went 0-for-4 with the man advantage against a Carolina team that had allowed seven power-play goals in its first five games. The Kings are now 1-for-20 on the power play this season and [...]

Still a work in progress

The Kings’ third line generated perhaps the most important goal of the game Wednesday night. Carolina had taken a 2-1 lead on Eric Staal’s breakaway goal with 2:14 remaining in the first period, but Michal Handzus tied the game with nine seconds remaining, after Wayne Simmonds tossed the puck to the net and Alexei Ponikarovsky [...]

One excellent period

Jonathan Bernier’s second game this season, much like his first, was a bit uneven. Bernier looked a bit unstable at times during the first two periods Wednesday against Carolina, but was fantastic in the third period, when he made 15 saves and helped kill two Carolina power plays. The Kings will go back to Jonathan [...]

Harrold on the spot

This probably isn’t how Peter Harrold wanted his season debut to go. Harrold, a healthy scratch from the first five games, will be in the Kings’ lineup tonight in place of the injured Drew Doughty. Harrold is now in his fifth season with the Kings and played 39 games last season — some on defense [...]

He’s not saying

The answer to the question is…a shy grin. I asked Andrei Loktionov today about his first NHL goal and what his intentions really were on the play last night. Loktionov held the puck behind the Carolina net, without any real pressure, but without any real options in front of the net either. No teammates were [...]

No punishment likely

Given the time of day — beyond 4:30 p.m. in the East — it’s highly unlikely that Carolina’s Erik Cole will receive any supplemental discipline for his hit on Drew Doughty last night. Looking at the video clip, it seems clear that the hit was late. The question would be whether it falls into any [...]

Tonight’s lineup

Peter Harrold will replace Drew Doughty in the lineup and likely will be paired with Willie Mitchell, but Terry Murray said he hadn’t made a final decision on that pairing. The Kings will also go back to a fourth line of Brad Richardson, Brayden Schenn and Kevin Westgarth tonight. More notes/quotes from the skate to [...]

Doughty update

Asked for an update this morning on Drew Doughty, general manager Dean Lombardi said Doughty would be out “at least a week.” Lombardi did not elaborate on the nature of Doughty’s upper-body injury, caused by a hit from Carolina’s Erik Cole. Some players are on the ice for a morning skate, so we’ll find out [...]

Morning in Arizona

Here’s the scene this morning in tropical, majestic… I mean, in Arizona. (I’m not the biggest fan.) The Kings will have a team meeting at 11 a.m., which might be followed by a skate for some players. Hopefully, we’ll have a Drew Doughty update at that point.

Postgame notes (Oct. 20)

Some notes from last night’s game… – The Kings held on to beat Carolina, 4-3, behind Andrei Loktionov’s first NHL goal and Anze Kopitar’s first goal of the season, plus goals from Ryan Smyth and Michal Handzus. Kopitar also had an assist for the Kings’ only multi-point game. – Drew Doughty played 6:49 in the [...]

Doughty injury video

Here is the best (perhaps only) available video of the hit sustained by Drew Doughty tonight, from Carolina’s Erik Cole, that forced Doughty from the game… Doughty injury video
