After three months of rehabilitation and countless hours of skating and practicing, Matt Greene will be back in the Kings’ lineup tonight. To make room for Greene on the active roster, the Kings are expected to put Drew Doughty on injured reserve — he would be eligible to return on Thursday, per league rules — [...]
Afternoon in Denver
I forgot the morning picture, but it looks pretty much the same in the afternoon. There was light rain yesterday but it’s dry and cool today…
Tonight’s defense
Matt Greene will pair with Willie Mitchell, while Jack Johnson will pair with Rob Scuderi and Davis Drewiske will play with Peter Harrold. Up front, the Kings won’t make any changes in personnel or lines.
Greene returns
Matt Greene will be in the Kings’ lineup tonight. Jake Muzzin will likely be out, although that has not yet been confirmed. More to come shortly…
Ersberg cleared waivers
Erik Ersberg has cleared waivers and the Kings are in the process of terminating his contract, which will allow him to join a KHL team. The Kings were able to terminate the contract because Ersberg left the team (Manchester) without permission.
Kozun, King scoring
Brandon Kozun and Dwight King are off to great scoring starts for the Manchester Monarchs. Kozun had two goals and King had one as the Monarchs beat Bridgeport 6-3 last night. Kozun and King each have five goals in six games this season. The Monarchs took a 3-0 lead, then scored twice after Bridgeport closed [...]
Today’s notebook, etc.
A collection of a few things here… First, to catch up on today’s news and notes, please check out my LAKings.com notebook by clicking here. Second, a reminder that some tickets are still available for the LAKingsInsider.com suite night at Staples Center, for the Nov. 11 game against Dallas. Tickets in the main “super suite” [...]
Forwards staying put
Even when the wheels started to come off for the Kings last night in Phoenix, Terry Murray kept his top two lines intact. He did some shifting with the bottom six forwards though, at one point going with a line of Brad Richardson, Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds, a trio that seemed to have some [...]
Ready to step up?
Depending on how you look at it, it’s either “pressure” or “opportunity.” Terry Murray prefers to call it the latter, but clearly there will be significant attention on Jack Johnson while Drew Doughty is out of the lineup. Now, Johnson is clearly the Kings’ best puck-moving defenseman and its best option as a power-play quarterback. [...]
Shoot, shoot, shoot
The Kings’ power play has not produced this season. You might have noticed. The Kings are 1-for-22 on the power play this season and, as was noted yesterday, they’re actually a “minus-1” on the power play, given that they have surrendered two shorthanded goals. Terry Murray now gets questions about the power play on a [...]
Trying to pair up
With Drew Doughty out of the lineup, there’s not likely to be much stability on the Kings’ defense for a while. What to do? With Matt Greene about to return — perhaps as soon as tomorrow — do the Kings take out Peter Harrold, who did an admirable job against Phoenix (and who can also [...]
Greene, Parse updates
Here’s the official word for Terry Murray, regarding his thoughts on whether Matt Greene might return to the lineup tomorrow… MURRAY: “I haven’t decided yet. He had a pretty good practice. I know he’s feeling good. I think we need to decide, as coaches, and I need to decide if he’s game-ready. … There will [...]
Friday practice update
It’s possible that Matt Greene might make his season debut tomorrow. After practice today, Terry Murray said he would consider putting Greene in against Colorado, but said he hadn’t made up his mind and didn’t say who Greene might replace. Scott Parse continues to make progress but his return is not imminent, Murray said. Jonathan [...]
Ersberg heading out
Erik Ersberg has been placed on waivers and is expected to join a KHL team. Technically, in NHL terms Ersberg has violated his contract, and after he clears waivers, the Kings will be able to terminate his contract and cut ties with him. The Manchester Monarchs have already called up Martin Jones from the ECHL.
Postgame notes (Oct. 21)
Some notes coming out of last night’s game… – Wayne Simmonds had his first two goals of the season but the Kings lost to Phoenix 4-2 after trailing 3-0 early in the second period. – The Kings had their three-game winning streak snapped and are now 4-2 this season. They have allowed a shorthanded goal [...]
Tonight’s game story (Oct. 21)
Here’s my LAKings.com game story for tonight, with stats and video included. Thanks for reading… Kings lose to Phoenix 4-2
Simmonds postgame quotes
Wayne Simmonds’ postgame thoughts… (on his two-goal game…) SIMMONDS: “It’s kind of a win-lose situation. We lost the game, and obviously you want to get the two points, so that’s disappointing. The first period is what did us in. We’ve always got to come out with a good start, and that’s where we paid the [...]
Murray postgame quotes
Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the game…) MURRAY: “In the second period and third period, I thought we picked it up pretty good in those two periods. We outshot them 2-1 in the second and outshot them in the third, and had chances. But the first period is where it’s at in the NHL. You [...]
Brown postgame quotes
Dustin Brown’s postgame thoughts… (on playing without Drew Doughty…) BROWN: “Whenever you lose one of your top-end players, it becomes a situation where everyone needs to up their game a little bit. We’ll see what happens. I’m not sure what’s going on with him, but as a team we can’t be concerned with when he’s [...]
FINAL: Coyotes 4, Kings 2
Phoenix’s Lee Stempniak completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal with 34.6 seconds remaining. The Kings ended up outshooting the Coyotes 30-27, and put late pressure on Bryzgalov, but couldn’t complete the rally and had their winning streak end at three games. More from the locker room to come…
