Scott Parse update

Scott Parse, who injured his groin in the first preseason game last month, continues to skate and look strong. Parse has been skating with the Kings’ fourth-line players and looks strong, but no firm date has been set for his return to the lineup. “I don’t know when, but it’s close,” Parse said after practice [...]

Strong on the kill

A big topic of discussion Tuesday remained the Kings’ successful kill of last night’s five-minute penalty. The entire situation was set up for disaster. The Kings were already down 2-1, on the road, had just lost their team captain to a game-misconduct penalty and had to kill a five-minute power play against a Minnesota team [...]

Brown not out

There’s not a whole lot to add to the Dustin Brown discussion, other than to cap it by saying that nobody with the Kings was really surprised at the lack of supplemental punishment. In addition, as soon as I saw the replay of the Niklas Kronwall hit on Teemu Selanne, compared to Brown’s hit — [...]

Doughty: wait and see

The slim chance that Drew Doughty, recovering from an apparent concussion, would join the team in Dallas on Thursday has vanished, and Doughty’s status for Saturday’s home game against New Jersey is not yet known. As noted before, Doughty’s status would be dependent entirely on his ability to pass a baseline test and be medically [...]

Tuesday practice update

As expected, Dustin Brown will not face any supplemental discipline for last night’s hit on Antti Miettinen. Jonathan Bernier will start in goal against Chicago and no changes are expected on defense. Terry Murray said he’s still undecided about the makeup of his fourth line. More notes and quotes to come…

Take a second look?

In the aftermath of the Dustin Brown hit, Kings coach Terry Murray was asked about instant replay, and specifically whether hits such as Brown’s should be subject to immediate review, to determine whether or not there was actual contact to the head. A five-minute major penalty can play a significant factor in a game, but [...]

Punishment poll

In three of the past four games, the Kings have been involved in plays in which the term “supplemental discipline” has been tossed around in some form. There was Erik Cole’s hit on Drew Doughty in the Carolina game, Wayne Simmonds’ “butt-ending” of TJ Galiardi in the Colorado game and Dustin Brown’s hit on Minnesota’s [...]

The view from Minnesota

Here’s a sampling of stories from the Minnesota media after last night’s game. After his hit from Dustin Brown, Antti Miettinen did not miss a shift but declined to talk to reporters after the game. Two-goal lead predictably doesn’t last (Star-Tribune) Wild’s special teams doesn’t live up to their name in shootout loss to Kings [...]

Postgame notes (Oct. 25)

Here are some notes from last night’s Kings-Minnesota game… – Jarret Stoll and Anze Kopitar had power-play goals and the Kings beat Minnesota 3-2 in a shootout. It was the second time this season that the Kings won a game without scoring an even-strength goal, following their 2-1 season-opening win at Vancouver. – For the [...]

Brown hit video

There’s no official video of last night’s hit by Dustin Brown on Antti Miettinen, but this is a pretty good one. The Kings have not heard anything from the league office about possible supplemental discipline, and the consensus seems to be that they won’t. Given the speed and nature of the hit, it’s hard to [...]

Here’s my LAKings.com game story for tonight, with stats and video included. Thanks for reading! Kings beat Wild 3-2 in shootout

Murray postgame quotes

Terry Murray’s postgame thoughts… (on the success against Minnesota’s power play…) MURRAY: “We didn’t do anything special. That’s the way our penalty-killing has been going, and the structure we’ve been showing all year. We try to do a real good job up ice, and kind of serpentine back through the neutral zone to put constant [...]

Kopitar postgame quotes

Anze Kopitar’s postgame thoughts… (on killing the major penalty…) KOPITAR: “It’s one of those things where you get a major called against you, and there’s nothing better than to kill that off and get the momentum off that. After that, we obviously got a 5-on-3 and we cashed in pretty quick. I don’t think you [...]

Greene postgame quotes

Matt Greene’s postgame thoughts… (on the win…) GREENE: “We got down early there, but we’ve got a lot of confidence in this room. Early on, we had a lot of chances. We just weren’t shooting the puck. It could have easily been the other way, 2-0 us. We just stuck with it. Quickie [Jonathan Quick] [...]

Reaction to Brown hit

After the game, Dustin Brown talked about his hit on Anitti Miettinen and the ensuing five-minute major and game-misconduct penalties for a hit to the head. Brown expressed certainty that he did not hit Miettinen in the head. BROWN: “If I had hit him in the head, he would probably be on the ice for [...]

End of regulation: 2-2

After a scoreless third period, the game heads to overtime. The Kings have gone beyond regulation once this season, in their season-opening shootout win over Vancouver. Shots were 31-21 in favor of the Kings in regulation.

Kings 2, Wild 2

After the Kings killed Dustin Brown’s five-minute penalty, they had no less than four outstanding scoring chances. The fourth one ended up in the net, as Anze Kopitar pounced on a rebound in front and scored a 5-on-3 goal with 17 seconds remaining. The Kings are outshooting the Wild 23-16 through two periods and will [...]

Game misconduct for Brown

Kings winger Dustin Brown received a game-misconduct penalty for a hit to the head on Minnesota’s Antti Miettinen, 8:12 into the second period. The Kings were also assessed a five-minute penalty. Brown kept his arm tucked to his body but hit Miettinen as Miettinen was following through on a shot.

End of first: Wild 2-1

In sort of an odd period, the Kings clearly got the better of the scoring chances but trailed 2-0 until Jarret Stoll’s late power-play goal. The Kings had 10 shots on goal to Minnesota’s 8 in the period. The teams will be 4-on-4 to start the second period.
