Postgame notes (Oct. 28)

Some notes from last night’s game…

— The Kings broke open a tie game with two second-period goals and beat the Dallas Stars 5-2 on Thursday night.

— The Kings finished their eight-day road trip with a 3-2-0 record and, with a 7-3-0 record, woke up this morning as the top team in the Western Conference and with the most points in the NHL.

— The Kings went 1-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill and also got Willie Mitchell’s shorthanded goal. On the penalty kill this season, the Kings have allowed only five goals and have scored two shorthanded goals.

— The second-period goals by Alexei Ponikarovsky and Wayne Simmonds came nine seconds apart, but that’s not a team record. Three times in franchise history, the Kings have scored goals six seconds apart, most recently in 1999. It first happened during the Kings’ inaugural season, in 1968, when Bill Flett and Eddie Joyal scored six seconds apart.

— The Kings were outshot 32-24, including 14-6 in the second period, but they outscored the Stars 2-0 in that period. The Kings have a 4-1-0 record this season when being outshot.

— Dustin Brown started the scoring with a first-period power-play goal, and the Kings are 4-0-0 when scoring the first goal this season.

— Jonathan Quick turned in arguably his strong effort of the season, with 30 saves, and improved his personal record to 6-1-0 this season.

— Willie Mitchell had a shorthanded goal and an assist for his first goal, and first multi-point game, as a King. Mitchell’s goal was also the first goal scored by a Kings defenseman this season. Mitchell played a game-high 24 minutes, 56 seconds.

— Jack Johnson had three assists and has seven assists in 10 games this season. In the five games since Drew Doughy has been out of the lineup, Johnson has six assists.

— Wayne Simmonds had one goal and one assist before he left the game early in the third period with an undisclosed lower-body injury. It was Simmonds’ second multi-point game of the season.

— Dustin Brown had a first-period goal, his fifth goal in 10 games this season. Brown also led all Kings forwards in ice time at 21:03.

— Rob Scuderi assisted on Wayne Simmonds’ second-period goal for his first point of the season.

— Anze Kopitar had one assist. The Kings have a 6-1-0 record this season when Kopitar records at least one point.

— Justin Williams’ empty-net goal was his fourth goal in 10 games this season. Williams had a team-high five shots on goal.

— Davis Drewiske’s third-period assist was his third of the season and gave him points in two consecutive games.

— Dustin Brown and Kyle Clifford were each credited with a team-high four hits. Rob Scuderi, Willie Mitchell and Davis Drewiske each were credited with three blocked shots.

— The Kings won 35 of 68 faceoffs (51 percent). Jarret Stoll won 14 of 19 draws (74 percent).
