Nothing to be ashamed of.

fail goal-tending on this one… i get some heat on it but im sorry but its true, how many times you going try that poke and get burned… and whats with the rebounds..

Kings looked like the better team tonight. The Hawks did not deserve that win. If the Kings play like this every game we’ll be just fine, but it’s frustrating not to get at least a point after that performance.

Bernier= The 2nd coming of LolBarbera!!

Oh well, great effort by the Kings and a good outing by Bernier… Unfortunately, someone to finish on the offense would have been nice. They worked their butts off in the third and deserved a better fate. But the Hawks are still the defending champs and they’re still a great team. Great game, unfortunately, no points… On to Dallas…

Bernie wasn’t exactly awful but he did have rebounds bouncing everywhere. Of course. Drewiske was on the ice for two Chi goals.
I think Bernier will get better. For now it appears not playing regularly is a problem for him.

I meant he wasn’t playing his game. Usually he smothers the puck with relative ease. Handles rebounds with precision. Positionally sound. These are the reasons that give Kingsfans hope, that he’ll develope beyond where Quick is. Tonight he did’t make things look easy.
If Turco had been in our net tonight we would have killed them.
[Reply]
Frustrating, but we played a good game overall. Could’ve have scored about 14 goals that 3rd period but were just inches away every time.
Bernier wants the last two goals back. Second time a goal is scored on what should be a fairly easy poke check. But then at other times he makes some really solid saves, so it’s hard to be too mad at him. I wouldn’t go as far as to say that he lost the game.
[Reply]
Nothing to be ashamed of at all. Good effort against a very strong team on the road with a back up goalie in and our best player out of the lineup.
Meh can’t win em all!

Not too bad against the champs. Didn’t get the bounces. Hey, where’s that guy that kept saying “that’s why Bernier will be the #1 goalie” whenever Quicker got scored on? Dallas next up! GO KINGS!!

Yeah, nothing to be upset about in this game except the final score. 100 points is no problem if the team skates like this every night.
If this is the level of play we’ll be stuck watching all season all I can say is OH YEAH!
[Reply]
Maybe we should tell the guys who are on the points for offense to shoot at anything that ISN’T the net, then maybe they’ll hit something!
[Reply]
Agreed everyone. The Kings played well enough to win, but didn’t get a couple of bounces.
Let’s get the Stars tomorrow with Quick in net.
[Reply]
Put bluntly, the outside goaltending, the Kings played well enough to win. The goaltending was the difference tonight. Besides a period or two, Bernier just doesn’t look like the same guy as last year–so far.
[Reply]
We outplayed them tonight in my opinion…First two goals should not have happened…Hit a few posts…Cost us the game…sucks to let points like these slip away, but needed better goaltending and these are the types of games where it is apparent that we need a finisher. We had multiple chances in the 3rd and could not convert. Better get a win tomorrow night to keep pace with the rest of the top crop in the West. I would stick with the line arrangements we had in the 3rd.

WOuld you like to know how often ONE goal is all you need to win a game? The Kings scored ONE. If the plan was to wait till the last five minutes and then tie it up and win in OT, that’s a stupid plan. We got lucky a couple of times this year and it worked. And a couple of times it didn’t.
If we lost that game 6-5, then you can talk about the goaltending.

@Quisp,
I’d say goaltending was exactly the difference. Turco doesn’t stand on his head, the Kings score three of four times. Bernier stands on his head, he gives up, maybe the first goal, and that’s about it.

@kenneth
i understand your point. I responded to it in the other thread (Bernier’s quotes post?).
i think the “turco stands on his head” argument only works retroactively. There were several bounces that didn’t go in for the Kings that could have and at least one for the Hawks that was just dumb luck.
I mean, seriously, what if while Turco was “standing on his head” Kopitar simply “refused to be denied”?

@Dominick, 115 Comments after Game 2 a 2-1 loss to Calgary this year. Not many nice things said, mostly directed at DL for not having grabbed a scorer. I am guessing these will be the same blogger that wrote DL & TL should lose there jobs for not signing Kovi. I am sure if asked now they would say they should lose their jobs for making an offer to Kovi. I am guessing in 2 or 3 months we will pick up a Selanne or someone else on a losing team with 1 year left on his contract for peanuts. Even if Parse comes back and fills the scoring nitch we probably will still do it for depth.

30 goals a season is 3 goals every 8 games. that’s five games out of every 8 with no goals.

Bernier is not playing as well as last year. As a backup he probably isn’t used to the inactivity. I still believe it would be in the greater good to send him somewhere he can start between call ups to rest Quick. I am not sure though how the waivers rule applies to Bernier age/games played? If he is exposed to waivers of course its out of the question.
I am happy to see JJ settle down and have another solid game. We outplayed them its just not always reflected on the scoreboard. The travel on no rest 0-2 lets end that in Dallas.

@Michael_DD8,
Oh that’s just stupid. Scuderi got burned. He didn’t “tie it off at the end there.” He. Got. Beat. For a defenseman, getting beat one-on-one is the equivalent of a goalie getting beat on a slap-shot from the blue-line at the boards with no screen.
Bernier missed with the poke check. Since the odds of him succeeding on the poke are better than his odds of stopping Sharp without it, and since he still has a chance to stop him if he misses the poke, I have no problem with him doing it. None. If it had worked, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
Bernier could have saved Scuderi’s a**. He didn’t. That’s not the same thing as “it’s Bernier’s fault.”
I have never seen the Kings look so good and lose…I will take this one all day just didnt get the bounce’s they needed. LOOKED OUTSTANDING! GO KINGS! See ya tomorrow in Dallas!

Solid all around performance by the team.
I think this was Scuds worst game by far. He looked tired out there and was a minus 3. I think he has the worst plus minus on the team. Still love the guy.
If those goal go in, all things being equal, we would not even be mentioning Bernier’s name in vain.
We have to beat these elite teams in order to continue gaining respect. Turco was a damn fool out there. It happens-Kings outplay, out shoot and run into a goal tending performance that shuts em’ down.

@Bonvivant1, We shouldn’t be using Bernier’s name in vain. He is a young kid that has never been a back up and may never be suited to be a backup. Its tough not playing for a week or 2 then playing just one. If it doesn’t expose him to waivers it may be best if we send him for tune up game at Manchester or Ontario before starts with the Kings. If the Kings continue to play well they will maintain the president’s trophy pace even losing some games where they don’t get the bounces.
[Reply]
Absolutely nothing to be ashamed of tonight, the Hawks were lucky to get away with a win like that. Just some bad bounces and hit posts. Bernier could have had a better game I’m sure he would acknowledge. I’m sure coach Murray will address that issue with him. Those last two Hawk goals should never have happened. Bernier did not look sharp on the second goal, on the third goal, you can’t miss the poke check plus he didn’t get any help from Scuds who got beat. I still say, they’re tough, but the Kings are a better team than them. Sometimes it just happens this way when you outplay a team and lose. Every team goes through it from time to time.

Great effort boys. We did look like the better team tonight. Great hustle and grit. At least we can keep up with the Hawks. Scuds needs to lean to hit the net from the point though. Get’em in Dallas boys GKG

-Hawks scored off a deflection and a 1-on-1. The lone goal the Kings managed to get in the net Turco got beat by Williams easily.
-Kings largely outplayed the Hawks except for the first half of the 2nd period.
-Turco got lucky by shots off the post and an early called off play when he clearly did not cover the puck.
-A Kings game without Doughty.
It’s a loss but it wasn’t a bad loss. I chock it up to luck for the former cup champs and nothing more.

@MR King,
The fault on the third goal belongs to Scuderi. But Scuderi is great. This is not some endemic problem. Defensemen get beat. When I played I was a defenseman. I almost never got beat one on one. But it would happen, say 5 times in a 50 game season, give or take. Sometimes it was because I made a stupid mistake. Sometimes it was because the player was really fr**king good. Now, even with elite forwards bearing down on you, a solid defenseman is still going to be able to stop him most of the time. But just as a hitter doesn’t have to hit every pitch, he just has to hit one — so it is with patrick sharp bearing down on Rob scuderi. 9 times out of 10, scuderi stops him. one time, sharp makes him look silly. two elite guys in a battle. sharp made a great move. and next time he tries it on scuds, it won’t work. the door is closed. i thought it was a fabulous goal, frankly. i didn’t like it, but i appreciated it.
it’s like when kopitar burned pronger in his first game. you take your hat off.

All performances were good enough to win, except the goaltending–not because it was terrible, but because it was the one thing the Hawks did demonstrably better than the Kings.
It’s not the end of the world, nor is it a surprise. Bernier has had some trouble against lesser teams this year, and again against the Hawks. He’ll work through it. I’m sure he’s getting exactly the same kind of support Quick got last season when he was disappointed with his play as well.

@danny, I totally agree Danny. Being the backup, Bernier has a totally different mindset this year. It is a much different to be the backup then to be the first round draft pick or prospect who gets called up to play a game or two to see how he does at the NHL level.
Ersberg knew how to keep himself focused while being the backup. You have to practice and keep your mind focused like you are the starter!

@danny and various anti-bernier commenters,
Announcing how “unimpressed” or “disappointed” you are in a goalie’s play over three games (two of which the Kings only scored one goal, WHICH IS NOT ENOUGH TO WIN), is about as silly as announcing how unimpressed or disappointed you are in a team’s performance over three games, or anything in fact, over three games. It’s three games. It’s too small a sample size for anyone to make an assessment of anything. That’s not an excuse, in case you’re wondering. There’s no need for an excuse. Your own opinion, by virtue of being so ridiculously premature, is self-mocking.
My suggestion would be, first of all, to learn the difference between a goal that’s primarily a goalie’s fault and a goal that primarily isn’t. Then, you need to watch the whole play develop, from the face-off to the goal. Then, you need to be able to identify the break-downs, of which there are usually several before we ever get to the goalie.
If you look at any Vezina winner, goal by goal over a season, you will see several soft goals. So what? It’s meaningless. You can make a little highlight reel of those soft goals and “prove” the guy is an idiot.
Personally, I can’t listen to someone blame the goalie in a loss where the team only scored one goal. That’s not enough to win.

It is very frustrating to watch the team work so hard, and so well, to get quality shots, but then fail to finish. If we somehow could find a sniper or two, we would be a true contender. A guy who can put the puck in the net would score a ton on this team.

Although the Kings lost, I was really pleased by the way they kept on going. Personally, the best effort so far in this season. Onto the next game.

@lepper,
I have a question for all of my fellow Kings fans. Can you ever remember the Kings playing two games in a row like this one and the one before? That is some of the best effort I seen out of this current team. If they continue playing like this they will win the division for sure.

Oh & how did that puck not past the line?
[Reply]
3 goals in about 30 shots from the Cup Champs is not bad. Bernier was a little floppy, but he was not bad. He bailed us out a lot in the third.
It was the PP.
Our 5-5 was great.
But without starpower and a QB, our PP was down right pathetic.
When CHI was on the PP they were terrifying Hossa, Keith, Kane, Toews
Us?
Harrold, Richardson, etc.
PP we need: another QB for the PP like a Jones, but better, and a LW that can pass.
Great job Williams.

There’s this Doughty guy. I’m hoping Dean can swing a deal for him.

Not saying that the sky is falling,.. But it sure would be nice to have a sniper on the first line. Sorry, Brad Richardson is not a first line player

There is lots of discussion here…
But not one word about Sharp stepping around or D and humiliating our goalie.
Ironically, it had nothing to do about our D or the goalie, but everything to do about Sharp and his skill. That’s what the game is all about. That is why the ‘Hawks are champs.
The important thing here is that these two teams should meet in the play-offs. It would be the best match=up in years!! If the regular season game is that good, look out for the spring!!

@Doc. Mark 1968, You hit it right on
That’s why they shed all of the players they did -in part to keep Sharp! League leader in goals and what a move -Bernier could not of done more -D-man could have used his body, but he was already not moving so there was no stopping it.

Yes.
Sharp is incredible so far.
With the stutter step, I couldn’t tell if I was watching hockey or hoops.

All that’s been said is valid in one way or another, but how about the lack of calls on their defensemen? It sure seemed the refs were sucking on blackhawk jock-fillers cause I saw their d-men holding Zeus on more than one occasion, saw the same bunch of D-ongs take DB down behind the net, hook (or at least do what Smyth did when he got a hook) all over the ice…AND NOTHING!! Rookie, or fairly new refs are the biggest black-eye to our sport!!!
[Reply]
the kings were the better team on the ice with one exception….
not the end of the world but bernier has to elevate his game…second time he’s been poked in the shorts in exactly the same way by his own poke check. i said he would learn after he tried that the first time…i was wrong. he needs to learn it now.

@rontheking,
why? why does he have to learn it now? i thought that was a perfect time for a poke check. didn’t work. why was Sharp skating in on him like that? I forget.

@Quisp,
well, it was almost a carbon copy of the last time he tried the poke check and got burned in his previous start. apparently it doesn’t work very well in that particular situation….
and the fact that scuderi was in sharp’s back pocket limits the time and the alternatives available to sharp. maybe bernier could have waited him out instead of going for the all or nothing move. i’m just saying….

Drewiske, what a great player not only is he useless with the puck but also away from it. I have never been a fan. We chose that over muzzin nice I would rather play five d than six with drewiske. Also I am tired of old man rivers skating around and always turning the puck over smyth in my eyes is way over rated he is at the end of his career this is a much faster league now the game is way to fast for him.

As I thought earlier today, Bernier needed to play a good game in order to give the Kings a chance. He played below average, not controlling rebounds and appeared to be fighting the puck instead of being in control.
Tough loss, which also proves that the Hawks have not lost as much as some had thought.

Bernier gets beat by the Stanley Cup Champs and all of a sudden he’s LaBarbera. What a fan base..
Quick has been great. But he still let in soft goals in Minnesota and Colorado, but everyone wants to hop on Quick like he’s Patrick Roy.
You guys do realize Bernier would’ve had to pitch a shutout in order for the Kings to win tonight… You do, right?

@Josh N.,
So. He could’ve had a shutout if he was solid. Goalies DO get shutouts in this league. He was never comfortable, fought the puck all night!
However, he’s clearly NO LaBarbera (or Ersberg, for that matter), that’s an insane comparison! He’ll get better & it’s games like this that will make him better, he’ll learn. It’s a process with these kids. Look how well Lewis & Clifford played tonight! Sometimes you have growing pains – but it’ll all pay off in the end.

The comments on this site are way too reactionary.
I’ve read all the comments here tonight and nobody has mentioned the great game played by Turco. Not to mention the fact that we played without our starting goaltender and Doughty, our number 1 d-man.
Even with Turco’s amazing game and us missing, due to injury, or resting,crucial pieces of our team, you people bitch about every vagary under the sun when we drop a game against the Stanley Cup champions.
Be realistic. Bernier is starting his first full season with the NHL club, he’s going to have an adjustment period from a personal expectations perspective. Look at his quotes, he’s too hard on himself. He played a solid game and deserves credit for keeping it close against a solid team.
We have a solid hockey club here in LA. Enjoy it.
[Reply]
Just because the difference was goaltending does NOT mean Bernier sucks. It means Turco was better this game. That’s really all it means. We all know Bernier is better than he played, and we all know Turco isn’t going to play that well every night. Bernier will improve as he adjusts to his role.
I’d say, normally, if you’re not playing the defending champions, even the performance Bernier was unhappy with would be good enough. On just about any other day, Turco’s not that good. On just about any other day, the puck bounces a little differently.
One good thing is that people are upset about losing a road game against the champions. I guess that means the Kings have arrived. Hey, Chicago’s still a really a good team (I don’t think another team, even Vancouver has played them so well.) The Kings probably had them gripping at times, too. Everyone just needs to reset, and things will be okay.

Judging by the amount of comments, 100+, we must have lost.
30-40 comments would indicate a win.

It’s the nature of people’s response to losing. What’s “great” is that the team is good enough to be disappointed by a loss in Chicago.

Oh, and it’s a reason I usually don’t linger after a loss (I might comment, but don’t usually read the comments until the next day.) Usually the negativity is disproportionately strong after a loss (I guess the obvious thing is really obvious.)

Everyone is blaming Bernier for the third goal when no one is talking about Scuderi getting abused by the little hesitation move. Scuderi was just a cone on the ice he stopped moving his feet and no one is blaming the D for the fact that Sharp should have never made it to the front of the net in the first place.
The Kings for the majority of this game dominated possesion and spent most of the game in Chicago’s zone. The D was agressive in pinching at the blue line and holding pucks in. There were more than a couple of instances in the game where Chicago finally got the puck back and were so tired they just had to turn it back over to the kings to get a line change. Too many positives other than the final score to be disappointed with the Kings last night. I sure hope after that effort they have enough to take care of Dallas tonight.
