No Doughty in Chicago

Drew Doughty, who tonight will miss his third consecutive game with an apparent concussion, will not be able to play Wednesday against Chicago. The Kings had held out hope that Doughty would be able to return, but he has not been medically cleared to play.

    Do concussions only become serious after the third or fourth one? Like why did Mitchell miss basically an entire season last year with one but Doughty is likely to play in the next week or so?

    oldthunder Reply:

    @andy, I’m no doctor, but there are varying degrees of concussions. Doughty’s was likely a mild one and they are being cautious while Mitchel’s was more likely a severe one and required far more recovery.

    @oldthunder, the more the concussions the worse they get. if you get too many you can develop Dementia pugilistica, think Muhammad Ali.

    @andy,

    It’s so hard to say, without all the clinical and physical exam information.

    It seems that Mitchell’s symptoms of headache and confusion remained way below baseline for an entire season.

    It seems that DD’s symptoms are way less severe.

    Truth is, we don’t know diddly, for certainty.

    I see no point in rushing his recovery…let him take as much time as he needs to get better. There’s way more hockey left to play not only this season but in his career here so It’d be stupid to try and rush things.

    One of the more painful memories in recent Kings history.

    At least in his case it was his 3rd or 4th and were much more serious hits to the head. The one that did him in was a knee by Craig Johnson, ouch.

    [Reply]

    Doc. Mark 1968 Reply:

    @Cricket,

    Yeah, I remember that horrible knee.

    Bob Miller always used to say that it was the fight with Ed Jovanovski that did it. But the one that always sticks out in my mind was when he went to throw a check against the Avs and triped head first into the boards going full speed…painful memories both literally and figuratively.

    Dewey should be fine but whenever they say “he’ll be back by such and such” and then it gets delayed, I worry. I think about Deads and Allison.

    They will do this for months. You people seem to forget the circus show around Deadmarsh. He was out for almost an entire calendar year, and the organization kept saying “Hopefully, he’ll come back soon”

    I won’t be sitting on pins n needles the next few weeks, I learned my lesson in 2003.

    So, you are expecting Doughty to be out till next year?

    [Reply]

    Jayrew Reply:

    @Deader2818, No, that’s not what i Said. I’m saying simply, don’t sit and play this waiting game…I’ll put the over/under at 10.5 games.

    I’ll take the over…

    [Reply]

    DougS Reply:

    @Jayrew,
    Think about it: What the heck do you expect them to say? Of course they don’t know for sure when Doughty will be back. It’s a concussion, and there’s no way to know for sure how long it will take for the symptoms to disappear. Any answer that sounds definite would be dishonest,

    And what do you expect the organization to say, under those circumstances? Of course, they hope that he’ll be back soon. As long as there’s a chance that he’ll recover more quickly than slowly, you can always hope. That strikes me as about as honest and as accurate as one can get.

    [Reply]

    Jayrew Reply:

    @DougS, I’m just sayin he’s out awhile don’t sit on pins n needles.

    BTW Rich just posted he’s on IR. I know it’s retroactive, but the tone in Rich’s writing makes this sales guy think it’s gonna be awhile….

    [Reply]

    DougS Reply:

    @Jayrew,
    And I’m saying that with an injury like this, nobody really knows anything. Take a look at what Bako has been saying this entire thread. So when the organization says that they don’t know how long he’ll be out, but they hope he’ll be back soon, they’re being straight up with us. I don’t see why it’s so hard to understand that.

    And if it pleases you to diss me without addressing the logic of my argument, then yes, I will call you out on it.

    puck73 Reply:

    @Jayrew, you dont have ta worry, Dewey wont have Andy Murray speeding up his rehab.

    @Jayrew, COMPLETELY different. I will give you everything I own, every penny I have, and will ever earn, my car, my house…and be your servent, FOR FREE, if that same thing happens again.

    It’s a mild concussion that they are being cautious with.

    Deadmarsh had 6 concussions in about an 8 year period…seen him lately? He STILL slurs his speach.

    Bummer. Seems pretty obvious his bell was rung a little harder than we first thought. Did DD ever have concussion issues in junior?

    [Reply]

    BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy Reply:

    @wavesinair,

    Have no clue.

    The key is the individual’s response to strenuous physical activity in the current moment; the symptoms, whatever they are, must not return.

    There is a similar complex of symptoms in a condition called ‘spinal headache’ which rarely occurs after a lumbar puncture. An individual can be fine in the sitting position, but cannot get up out of a chair or walk outside to the mailbox without dizziness, nausea or headaches. No pain reliever or medication makes things better. Since the site of trauma is known exactly (the spot where a needle penetrated the covering to the spine, or dura), treatment can be administered in the form of a ‘patch’, where the patient’s own blood is used to try and seal the small hole in the dura. The treatment usually works, in addition to additional post-procedure rest time.

    But in the case of a concussion, the site of a small leak of the fluid around the brain and spinal cord could be anywhere. All it takes is a tiny, never-healing leak and the symptoms persist indefinitely.

    In DD’s case, only time will tell…

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,
    I’m very familiar with spinal concussion’s (my wife’s family seems predisposed) and I’ve never heard them compared but that certainly makes much more sense by your description. Once again I learn something from another poster.

    @BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy,
    Helene says that DL said DD had a “setback on Saturday.” Does that mean he didnt pass the test as expected? Or his condition worsened? What kind of setback can you expect w/ a concussion?

    @wavesinair,
    No recollection of Doughty having any major injuries in junior, let alone a concussion, and I saw him play quite a bit with the Storm. I expect they are being very precautionary – young lad with a huge future ahead of him and quite the investment as well. Why rush it to capture 2 or 3 additional regular season games?

    I was looking forward to going into the UC with a healthy squad to see how we match up with the Hawks. But given the circumstances, let’s have DD save the energy and put on the foil for Kovalchuk.

    Rich,

    Can you elaborate on the situation? Is he not being cleared to play because he is not yet symtom free, or is it more along the lines that they are being extra cautious at this point?
    You mentioned he has been skating, and I heard speculation that he had a setback on Saturday. Also heard that he must be symtom free for atleast 48 hrs. How has he felt after he skating sessions? Any extra info would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    TJB

    Rich Hammond Reply:

    Any player with a concussion must pass a baseline test. “Setbacks,” or being symptom-free on the ice, isn’t the deciding factor. The way a player feels on the ice is only really an indication of whether or not the player should attempt to take the baseline test. In general, a player won’t attempt the baseline test unless he’s been symptom-free for two days. I have no idea about the particulars of how Doughty is feeling. He’s in Los Angeles and I’m on the road, so I can’t talk to him. To my knowledge, Doughty has not had a baseline test.

    Ya don’t rush him back! It is way more important that he take his time and be healthy coming back at 110% rather than trying to force it trying to get back into the lineup. Our defense can handle the load until then for sure. Rest up and hope to see him back in the lineup against New Jersey

  17. Slim says:

    I had no idea it was a concussion. The way the hit looked his shoulder/chest seemed to take all the energy. Getting that first (reported) concussion at a young age is definitely a concern for such a promising player. Obviously, he shouldn’t come back until he’s feeling 100% and passing every neurological test with flying colors. As a die hard fan, I’d sacrifice playing short-handed on the blue line and taking whatever extra losses necessary to get DD back with every possible chance to be successful in the long term.
