Postgame notes (Oct. 23)

Some notes from last night’s game…

— The Kings got a hat trick from Brad Richardson, plus power-play goals from Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown and an even-strength goal from Alexei Ponikarovsky, to outlast the Colorado Avalanche 6-4 in the teams’ first meeting this season.

— Richardson recorded his first career hat trick against the team that drafted him (in the fifth round in 2003). Richardson spent parts of three seasons with the Avalanche before they traded him to the Kings in 2008. Richardson entered the night with 30 goals in 254 career NHL games and with zero goals and one assist in six games this season.

— Richardson started the game as the fourth-line left winger, but was moved up to the first line in the second period in place of Andrei Loktionov. Richardson scored his three goals on a team-high six shots on goal.

— Special teams were enormous in the game. The Kings, who started the night with one power-play goal in six games this season, went 2-for-5 with the man advantage. On the penalty kill, the Kings had allowed only two goals in six games. They allowed two Colorado power-play goals, but also scored a shorthanded goal for the game-winner.

— Wayne Simmonds received a game-misconduct penalty and a five-minute major “butt ending” penalty for a hit against Colorado’s TJ Galiardi 8:40 into the third period.

— The Avalanche outshot the Kings 32-30. It was the fourth time this season, in seven games, that the Kings have allowed more than 30 shots on goal, but they have a 3-1 record this season in games in which they are outshot.

— The Kings won 33 of 59 faceoffs (56 percent).

— Jonathan Quick stopped 28 of 32 shots to improve his personal record to 4-1 this season.

— In his first game of the season, Matt Greene played 21 minutes, 24 seconds, second-highest among all Kings, and had a plus-2 rating and was credited with a game-high six hits.

— Anze Kopitar led all Kings forwards in ice time at 21:25.

— Davis Drewiske was credited with a team-high three blocked shots.

— Of the Kings’ 18 skaters, 12 recorded at least one point, with Richardson recording the only multi-point game.
