Fan salute

Did the Kings start a new tradition last night? After the win, team captain Dustin Brown led the Kings in a “raised stick” tribute to the fans, a nice gesture that a couple other NHL teams have also picked up over the years. After the game, the players said the idea was Brown’s, and Brown said he had done it at other levels of hockey throughout his career.

BROWN: “The support here that we’ve gotten, not only in the past couple years but ever since I’ve been here, has been unbelievable. It’s something very simple that allows us to show how much we appreciate them each and every game.”

I am going to sound like a naysayer here….but it is a bit gimmicky…the Rangers have been doing it for years.

I’d rather they just play their asses off and be too exhausted to stay out on the ice.

It is a nice gesture though, considering it was Vancouver.

I think it is unnecessary on a regular basis.

I think the regular fans KNOW that we are appreciated by the players. It is mentioned alot in postgame interviews.

    :)

@deelo, I think it is great. the more the players recognize the fans, the more the fans will salute the players. We want Staples to be the loudest building and tuff to play at for visiting teams.

    BakoCAkingsCondorsGuy Reply:

    @deelo, @Dominick,

They do it often in the minor leagues and have been for awhile. It’s classy and sometimes painful (if its done after a loss), but it gives the fans a chance to reward a good effort and the players really appreciate that reward… You’d be surprised!

Sometimes I don’t feel like applauding the effort, however. Other times I feel like bowing to the players for their struggles. I know one thing: it gives me good photos!

    [Reply]

    Shotongoal Reply:

@deelo, I thought it was very cool, and done at the right time, for the right game and reason. Do I think it should be done after every home win? No, not necessary, but for a big win, or emotional win, sure I think its a great gesture. Anything done too much becomes boring and not special.

Very nice! I agree that the occasional salute would be the best way to maintain the impact of its intended meaning. Just an opinion.

What would be a special occasion – that’s for the players to decide. They’ll know when the time is right. Whatever happens though, the Kings fans and players respect and value each other. No argument there.

  17. Edward R. Meek says:

Saluting the fans after the game, win or lose, is only fitting and proper for the players to do. The fans shovel out thousands of dollars a year (joke)without any real appreciation from the players or the organization as a whole. They do it in the minor league level…..in fact, if you see soccer and sports in europe, it’s a normal and natural thing. So, why not have the NHL fat cats do the same here? Dustin Brown deserves high marks for getting his mates to do what’s right.

I think we dont want to take the luster off it by doing it every game. What made it a special thing to do was that they put in the effort it takes to take down the team that eleminated us in the playoffs. Its the best tribute to the fans yet this year. I see it as a ;hay you have our backs, and we have yours moment between the players and fans. Our collective passion is strong, so lets ready with our love when we struggle. With out some adversity we might grow as much before playoffs.

Last night was the first time outside of the playoffs where almost all of the fans stayed in their seats after the game and watched the team come out to congratulate Quick, so when Brownie and the boys raised their sticks it really was a magical moment. There’s a real bonding going on this year between this team and the fans…and it’s palpable. I loved the salute. It was a signal that we’re all in this together, fans and players. It’s a connection I haven’t felt in twenty years of going to the games, and if we’d seen this gesture anytime before now it would have seemed fake. But not anymore. Thanks Brownie. You are a real leader. Go Kings!

I enjoyed the salute. A nice gesture to their loyal fans. Not sure it would mean as much after a loss nor would they get as nice of a response. Probably should limit it to after home wins. It’d be cool to see at the Pond after a win over the Quacks though.

    Jeff Hoffman Reply:

    @Tom,

To me it means just as much after a loss. Winning or losing shouldn’t have any bearing on if the players thank and appreciate the fans. Sure we all want the team to win, but doing it all the time win or lose to me gives it more meaning, not less. So I don’t really understand those saying it would lose meaning if they did it every game.

    [Reply]

    Leo of Pico Reply:

@Jeff Hoffman, after a hard fought loss is the time that the fans are suppose to show their appreciation would you really want the team after a loss come out and salute you what else you want it should of been enough for the teams play

    [Reply]

    Shotongoal Reply:

@Jeff Hoffman, Sorry dude, I totally disagree. The last thing I want to see if they lose is them raising their sticks. I want to see heads down and getting back to the locker room ASAP so they can focus on why they lost that game and start to think about winning the next game. This is not Peter Pan fantasy stuff, every game in this league is important now. I’ve been a TRUE fan of this team for almost 40 years and I want a Cup, not fan salutes. Just my opin….

The Ontario Reign do this at the end of every game they win (not sure why not every game) and have been doing that since game 1 two years ago. It’s a very classy thing to do for the fans, a quick tip of the cap. Keep it up!

I liked seeing the guys raise their sticks to the crowd, but one other thing got me more… they all came out on the ice and congratulated each other. The showed they are a team. The stick raising was a nice cherry on top to the fans.
I want to see the guys work as a team and win. The team wins, the fans win.

I’m not sure where who started the tradition. I do know that the Guelph Storm, both Brown’s and Doughty’s alma mater, have been doing it forever at end of every winning game (just saw it last night again as a matter of fact). And, I’m not sure how long the Rangers have been doing it, but Ryan Callahan was a former Storm that took part in the post-win ritual.

Personally, I like to see it and it just caps the night off nicely!

I’m not sure where the tradition originated. I know that the Guelph Storm (Brown’s and Doughty’s OHL team) have done it forever and continue to do so after every home win – just did it last night as a matter of fact. Also, Ryan Callahan on the Rangers is a former Storm player and was well-trained in the post-win stick salute.

I like it – it caps off a winning night nicely.

Brown just shot way up in my book. Everyone around me last night was talking about what a classy move that was. When he got the “C” I wasn’t sure it was the right move, but he’s proved me wrong time and time again. I ran into one of his teammates over the summer in a Starbucks, and the player talked about how Brown had talked him into training with the team instead of going away for the whole break. The kid has turned into quite a leader. Keep it up, Brownie.

Remind me not to forget a gift receipt if I ever get you fickle fans a gift, then you can just returnit instead of complaining. You have a right to your opinion but came off to me as ungrateful. Not everyone just a few on here really stuck out as rude imho.
