Mattias Norstrom Night

The Kings announced today that former captain Mattias Norstrom will be honored in an on-ice tribute before the Oct. 30 home game against New Jersey. Norstrom played 780 games for the Kings, second all-time among defensemen and fifth overall. From 1993-2008, he also played for Dallas and the New York Rangers.

“Matty Norstrom was an exceptional teammate, a standout player and leader, and a fan favorite for the Kings for a number of years, and we are thrilled to recognize him in this special manner,’’ said Kings president Luc Robitaille, a teammate of Norstrom for seven years.

Also, some have asked about the Kings’ schedule for alternate jerseys this season. I have it, and it stars tonight with the black/white third jerseys. They will wear the vintage “purple and gold” jerseys on Jan. 15 vs. Edmonton, Feb. 24 vs. Minnesota and March 19 vs. Anaheim. As for the black/white third jerseys, they will be worn for the following home games: tonight vs. Atlanta, Nov. 11 vs. Dallas, Dec. 26 vs. Anaheim, Jan. 1 vs. San Jose, Jan. 20 vs. Phoenix, March 3 vs. Phoenix, March 7 vs. Dallas, March 24 vs. San Jose, April 2 vs. Dallas, April 6 vs. Phoenix and April 9 vs. Anaheim.

    Very cool, please do it tastefully. Matty was never an over the top kinda guy and I’d hate to see him all embarrased out there (well maybe just a little).

    @Jammer06, He was our captain for crying out loud.

    Jammer06 Reply:

    @MacSwede,
    Indeed but I think he might want to crawl off the ice if they gave him something like a car. (not that they would, but I’m sure they’ll have something for him)

    @Jammer06, I hope they don’t give him the same tacky painting they gave Adam Deadmarsh.

    No, no leaked photos here, the ones they’ve been wearing, the “trendy” ones.

    @Kingsfanone, mannnnn the all black alternates are garbage. Keep the Purple! We have one of the best and unique color schemes in the league!

    I was just thinking this past week about how it would be nice for the organ-eye-zation to have a Matty Norstrom night. Very class move by the team. He wore the “C” well and deserves the honor.

    How nice would that be having Matty Norstrom on our team right now.

    The warrior gets some well deserved recognition….Luc probably had to talk him into doing this.

    [Reply]

    Bill M. Reply:

    @Barry’s Mullet, Yeah. Cause, you know…our blue line absolutely sucks these days.

    Nothing bad against Matty, he was a good player, and a good captain, and it’s great that the kings are honoring him for his contributions to the club (which are noteworthy), but I’ll take doughty and mitchell on the blue line any day.

    [Reply]

    Barry's Mullet Reply:

    @Bill M., You obviously didn’t see this guy play. He was one of the few bright spots on many bad Kings teams.

    No offense, but Willie Mitchell couldn’t hold this guys jock strap and lets see how many shots DD gladly blocks with his face or clears out the front of the net. DD will hopefully win many awards and help bring us a SC, but he won’t win any awards for unsung hero or ultimate warrior. Norstrom is in that class of players who gladly lets players like DD bask in the limelight while they do all the little things that go unnoticed…A PRO’s PRO!

    So happy to be able to see the organization honor Matty. Class guy all the way and a great representative of the Kings in every way. I already knew I was going to blow out my voice on October 30th booing Kovalchuk, but now I have something positive to yell for too!

    That’s a cool thing for Matty. He was a true professional.

    as far as the purple and gold worn the other night in Vancouver…
    What moron decided not to put the names on the jersey’s?
    That was without question, one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.
    It’s opening night. We have new players on the team…why make life harder for the fans..just to show what it was like 40 years ago? For that matter they shoiuld have shown the game in black and white like they had 40 years ago, or why not just have it on radio only?
    Sorry about the rant, but that pissed me off in the beginning of the game.

    Shakes Reply:

    @nykingfan,
    It’s funny that you say that because I think there isn’t one person who would’ve said “man they really screwed up the retro night by having the names”… I agree with you nyk….but maybe in a slightly more chilled out way.

    By the way you gonna catch the Kings against the Rangers or Isles this year?

    nykingfan Reply:

    @Shakes,

    It didn’t bother me as much that sounded lol Just thought it was a dumb idea. By the 3rd period, I had my bearings going!

    It’s interesting that other than tonight’s game every black jersey night is against the pacific division.

    Anyone have the time/energy to find out what the team’s record was in those sweaters last season? IIRC it was pretty good.

    It can’t be a coincidence, can it?

    Well Deserved. Good on Luc and the organ-eye-zation. Maybe they’ll let Moller skate that night so we can have Sweden represent in the lineup on the ice for Matty as well.

    Since Ersberg got sent down, we are Swede-less.

    The Kings need to make the third jersey their primary jersey. It’s way better than the ugly black/purple jerseys. I would be the players like it better too since they chose to wear it in the playoffs.

    Shakes Reply:

    @puck73,
    If you repeated that sentence, inserted “Ducks” for “Kings” at a game in the Pond that sentence would make perfect sense without any reference to where the seats are. I mean literally, they only shoot twice per game so far.

    I wonder if there will be a chance for any of us Norstrom fans to get to meet him to say thanks and have him sign an autograph or two. I had bought a jersey with his name on it right before he was traded to Dallas, and it has always been a hope of mine to meet him. Awesome idea to remember our great players–bring back Ziggy and Allison too!!
