Bernier gets a chance

Jonathan Bernier’s season debut will come for the Kings tonight, the first of what could be 20-25 games — at least according to coach Terry Murray’s plan — for Bernier in goal this season. As usual, Miikka Kiprusoff is scheduled to start for the Flames. The Saddledome hasn’t been kind to the Kings in recent seasons, but Bernier did make two of his three starts on the road last season (Nashville and Dallas) and won both. Here’s what Murray said this morning about swapping in Bernier for Jonathan Quick…

MURRAY: “We really like our goaltending situation. Two young guys who are very capable of playing a lot of big and important minutes for us this year. Jonathan Quick is our No. 1 guy. He’s going to play upwards to 60 hockey games. With Bernier, I want to keep him active. I don’t want to end up like last year, like I did with Ersberg. I want to keep him going and keep him fresh, with probably a game a week over the course of the year. He’s geared up for that, mentally. I know it’s going to be a change for him, because of being the No. 1 guy on all of the teams that he has been on, but it’s an adjustment that he can make, and he’s ready to support.”
