Bernier wins backup job

Terry Murray has announced that Jonathan Bernier has won the backup goalie job. Erik Ersberg is not on waivers and — this is just my amateur analysis here — probably wouldn’t be until tomorrow at the earliest, in case Bernier should get hurt in today’s game. More updates to come…

    Bernier will be our number one goal tender for many years and probably by Game 20 this year

    @TJking, Agreed, but I think he’ll #1 by the end of October.

    I could see the Ducks grabbing Ersberg off waivers. He’s a better option than McElhinney.

    @Linda M.,
    apparently not. in that article from Tues OC Times, the writer said Bernier would be good to fill in behind Hiller AND McEl. so by default, EE would be behind those guys. A) EE cant catch a break. and B) that writer is typical OC duck crap.

    @jayhay,

    I’ve watched McElhinney for years, there is no way that either of Bernier or Ersberg would be behind him on the depth chart. The fact that the Ducks believe so is evidence enough that they will remain in the cellar, which is fine by me.

    Will Bernier giving up several bad goals tonight (*and every one will be bad if we’re fair in comparison when EVERY goal Quick gives up is bad therefore every goal either goalie gives up will be bad) change your mind on him being the messiah that will save us all?

    @Dan H,

    I made a similar comment on another thread and got call “ms. quick” but someone. So I’m guessing the answer is no.

    Do the Kings get anything in return if Ersberg is claimed off waivers? Should they have traded him earlier?

    [Reply]

    AZ King Reply:

    @punkgothdoc,

    No, the Kings won’t get anything if he’s picked off of waivers. Not really much trade value in him, even if they traded him earlier, since the market is saturated with goalies right now.

    @punkgothdoc, No and yes. lol

    @Kris, punkgothdoc
    I thought Ersberg would be traded over the summer. But goalies were not exactly in short supply this summer, and the market was kind of glutted. Heck, nobody even touched Turco until Chicago signed him at a discount.

    Plus, I guess anyone watching the Kings (and I assume that the other 29 GMs pay attention) could see that Ersberg would the odd man out. If you were interested, you could just wait for exactly what is happening now and take your chances with a waiver claim.

    @punkgothdoc,

    Technically, if EE is picked up on waiver, the Kings are compensated $75,000.

    quisp Reply:

    Even though the market is glutted right now, I think there’s a pretty good chance he gets picked up by someone. He’s affordable and pretty reliable as a back-up.

    @quisp,

    Thanks for finally adding some sense to this thread.
    EE has both of those things which you mentioned, as well as he is younger than most of the other goalies that were/are available. He will be eagerly sought after, and I’m sure will continue to be successful with his new club.

    A good chance he go’s home to Sweden.Good league, and lots of play time may keep him more sharp. Next summer the goalie market could bring him back to the NHL. Wishing all my best for him. Please no haunting us in the future Eric.

  10. Barry's Mullet says:

    Good luck EE, not too many goalies in this league can play as well as you did only playing two games a month. And don’t feel bad for EE, he’s probably the least surprised person in the organization.

    Going forward…in order for the Kings to become a legit contender, JB or JQ must become that elite goaltender that we have all dreamed about for way too long.

    JQ had ONE good season and EE was never going to be the guy to take us all the way. In order for us to contend year after year, one of these guys has to establish themselves and start WINNING games for us, not stealing a game here and there, letting a soft one in every other night.

    Solid goaltending wins you cups, so I’m looking forward to seeing if one of these guys has what it takes to finally take us to the promised land.

  12. Pumpernicholl says:

    Come on, we knew this was going to happen. Ersberg will now be waived as I expected weeks ago.

    How can Bernier be kept down any longer?

    EE was plugging a gap last year, which was a factor in why he played so little. A “bridge player” all the way.

    I have nothing against Ersberg, truly. He has played some very strong games for the Kings. I wish him well. But this can be a tough business and some situations like this one, there is just no way to sugar-coat.

    So, does anyone want to continue arguing with me on the fact that it was a competition for the back up in words only?

    Or should we go back to the wacky theory that Ersberg was never injured in the first place? That may have been my favorite camp conspiracy theory this season…

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @holly, I agree. I was pretty outspoken about my doubts as to wether it was really an open competion.

    I thought we should have dealt him before camp, to eliminate any possible distractions (which didn’t really happen, I think), and give EE an opportunity to start a camp with a team where he had a real chance to win a job.

    Giving him away even for future considerations would have created a focus on Quick and Bernier battling it out for the #1 position.

  15. Cynic says:

    Nice they at least get it announced so EE doesn’t have to guess anymore. That’s some consolation. I hope he gets traded, even for a low round pick. We seem to do really well in the lower rounds anyway, why not stock up on those rather than just plop him on waivers.

    If we can trade Jason La’5-hole’ for a 7th rounder we should be able to get a 6th rounder for EE. ;-)

    Good for Bernie, bad for EE. Iceberg never caught a fair chance from TM, & maybe cuz TM knew JB was on the way. I might have done the same under similar circumstances.
    Thanks to EE tho, he gave us time to settle into a VERY FAVORABLE goalie situation now. Wish EE the best, cuz he did his job too well!!

    Is it Oct.12 yet? Can’t wait for the home opener!

    TM never gave him a chance…. I’ve been pondering on what player to get on a jersey and now I know…EE

    JQ is and still to me no true good championship kinda goalie.Just like last night I see a trend of one soft goals per game by this guy.

    JB doesn’t have my vote yet BUT I think he will be a better choice in the long run vs quick.

    54FIGHTING Reply:

    @gEE805,

    Seriously. What a joke.

    Bernier was never in any competition with EE. EE played and hurt himself out of a job last year and then again in training camp.

    [Reply]

    billanthony Reply:

    @gEE805, Agree Bernier is possibly/probably seen as the long term #1, but not to forget, Quick’s development trajectory has shown steep improvement the past couple of years. Quick likely still has some significant upside to his game.

    Great job the Kings have done in orchestrating the bringing along of two excellent goalie prospects, roughly a year a part in their development.

  24. Manchester Connection says:

    Hi Gang:

    Well it was obvious, even from my chair in Manchester, NH, that EE had no shot. The Kings have invested way too much in JB to make him a 3rd goalie or send him back to NH.

    TM & Hex told him last year to go back to the AHL and become the BEST! Well Goaltender of the Year took care of that.

    Now we will see if he can handle the NHL! There will be 1 very easy way to find out what kind of night he will have.

    Watch his first 3 save attempts. If he handles the puck like he hasn’t a care in the world, then he and the Kings are in for a great night.

    That was the biggest difference in JB from last year and 2 years ago…alot more relaxed and his focus was unreal. I think all the King’s fans will be very happy with JB.

    As far as JQ…play well my friend cause watching from the Zamboni enterance (like you use to in Lowell) sucks just as much.
