Kings 3-1

After a strong cycle, the Kings took a two-goal lead again when Linden Vey centered the puck from the corner and found Jordan Weal, who scored from close range in front at 6:09.

End of first: Kings 2-1

Not a lot of even-strength play, which is common in these rookie games. There was one fight in the period (with Deslauriers involved) and Kings goals from Hickey and Clifford, with some good offensive action overall for the Kings.

Kings 2-1

After a scramble in front, the Kings were unable to clear the front of the net and Jones got beat from close range with 3:34 left in the period.

Kings 2-0

Kyle Clifford scored an even-strength goal with 6:05 remaining in the first period.

Kings 1-0

Thomas Hickey scored a 4-on-4 goal 4:44 into the first period.

Muzzin interview

During the AHL playoffs, I chronicled Jake Muzzin’s story with this feature on LAKings.com. Now, Muzzin is preparing for his first real training camp with the Kings and seems to be gaining some momentum in terms of his chances of making the roster. Here’s what Muzzin had to say about his rookie-camp experience and his [...]

Kozun interview

Brandon Kozun is accustomed to being the underdog. Listed (probably quite generously) at 5-foot-8 and 164 pounds, Kozun has had to prove himself at every step, but has taken big steps since being selected by the Kings in the sixth round (No. 179 overall) of the 2009 draft. After a breakout season with the WHL’s [...]

Game day

Just a reminder that the Kings’ prospects will play the Phoenix Coyotes’ prospects in a game in Glendale, Ariz., at 6 p.m. today. The teams will also play tomorrow at 2 p.m. There is no TV/webcast/radio, but I will be there to provide coverage from both games, so stay tuned to the blog. Tonight’s updates [...]

Making impressions

I got a chance to ask Manchester coach Mark Morris, who is basically serving as the head coach of the rookie team, for his impressions of two closely watched players in the camp, winger Brandon Kozun and defenseman Jake Muzzin. Morris got a first-hand look at Muzzin at the end of last season, when Muzzin [...]

Training camp roster

The Kings’ training-camp roster is attached below. Note that there is one more number change this season, with Scott Parse going from 63 to 21. The Kings will start camp with 60 players, although that includes five tryout players plus the injured Matt Greene, Viatcheslav Voynov, Colten Teubert and Brayden Schenn (the latter two are [...]

Training camp schedule

Here is the complete on-ice schedule for the Kings’ training camp, which begins Saturday at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo. When I know which players are in which group, I will post that as well. All of the sessions are open to the public…

Injury report

Heidi Androl suffered an upper-body injury at the end of practice today. She is considered day to day… I wasn’t going to mention it, but since a certain team captain broke the news via Twitter… All joking aside, it was a little scary today when a puck came over the glass and struck Heidi on [...]

Morning practice update II

The second half of this morning’s rookie-camp session featured more 5-on-5 play and a better opportunity to get a look at the forwards. The defensemen still seemed to get the better of the action, and it’s tough to keep tabs on 25 guys at once, but I’ll share a couple things that jumped out at [...]

Monday practice update

The prospects are off the ice right now for mid-practice resurfacing, so here’s a quick update… I’ve been focusing on the defensemen, largely because there have been a lot of odd-man rushes in practice and it’s harder to get a real feel for forwards when there’s that much open ice. The defensemen have been under [...]

Health, finally, for Hickey

It’s been three years since Thomas Hickey was selected No. 4 overall by the Kings in the 2007 draft, and while his career since then has been a series of injury-plagued fits and starts, Hickey finally seems to be in position to make an impact. He’s healthy, and with at least one (possibly two) defensive [...]

Fransson’s opportunity

One of the focal points of the rookie camp so far has been Johan Fransson, largely because he’s a prospect who hasn’t been seen a lot. Fransson has played in the Swedish Elite League since 2002 and has never played a game in North America, but the Kings signed him in June and he is [...]

Injury update

Colten Teubert has not been on the ice during the rookie camp. He’s still wearing a cast on his hand/wrist, the product of the broken thumb he suffered late last season that has required two surgical procedures. Teubert said he expects to be on the ice Tuesday, when the rest of the crew is in [...]

Sunday morning practice

Brayden Schenn is not on the ice for this morning’s session, but everyone else is practicing, and on the same lines as yesterday. Lots of breakout drills and some 3-on-3 stuff so far and the defensemenn, as a group, look sharp. More to come…

Ponikarovsky interview

After his autograph session today, Alexei Ponikarovsky, one of the newest Kings, came to talk to the media in advance of his first training camp in Los Angeles… Question: How has it been, settling in here? PONIKAROVSKY: “I’m glad to be here, getting ready for the season, and I can’t wait to get out there [...]
