If the Kings were hoping for a big third-period turnaround, that’s not how it started, as Derek Hulak scored on a rebound for the Coyotes’ fifth goal, 4:59 into the third period.

Coyotes 4, Kings 0

Garrett Zemlak replaced Berube in goal halfway through the period, but he couldn’t help the Kings’ special teams. Phillip Lane scored with 3:45 remaining in the second period, on the power play, for a 4-0 lead. Phoenix is 3-for-3 on the power play. We’re now in the second intermission.

Coyotes 3-0

Jordan Szwarz scored his second power-play goal of the game, 1:13 into the second period.

Phoenix took the lead on Jordan Szwarz’s power-play goal at the 3:49 mark, with Michael Pelech in the box for kneeing.

Wednesday lineup

The Kings will go with a different look in this afternoon’s rookie game. It appears as though Elkins, Mullen and Kaunisto will be scratched, and replaced by Brace, Groulx and Pelech. The goalies will be Berube and Zemlak, although it’s not yet known whether Zemlak will get in the game.

Game recap/quotes

The first Kings game — unofficial as it might have been — was played tonight, with the Kings’ prospects beating the Phoenix Coyotes’ prospects 5-4 in a shootout. The Kings took a 3-1 lead into the third period, were quickly tied 3-3, led 4-3 and then won in a shootout on Brandon Kozun’s goal. Click [...]

Postgame reaction

Not surprisingly, there was concern about the Coyotes’ three-goal third period, but optimism about the number of offensive chances created and the overall play of Martin Jones. I have some quotes from Mark Morris that I will post ASAP, as well as some thoughts on the game, but right now it’s postgame dinner time. Being [...]

Brandon Kozun scored the only goal in the shootout and Martin Jones made three saves to give the Kings the victory. More from the locker room later…

The Kings got the lead back at the 6:35 mark. Jordan Nolan got to the net and dropped a nice pass for Robbie Czarnik, who got alone in front and scored from close range.

Tied 3-3

Phoenix tied the game with Blair Riley’s shorthanded goal at the 3:24 mark. It came from close range after a faceoff in the Kings’ zone.

End of second: Kings 3-1

The Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play and Brandon Kozun got stopped on a quick breakaway, but the Kings scored the only goal of the period and are getting the better of the offensive chances, by far.
