Schenn gets beyond scare

Brayden Schenn gave the Kings a bit of a scare this month when, while training with his junior team, he tweaked the knee that he injured near the end of last season. Schenn missed last week’s rookie camp, but was able to fully participate in drills Saturday afternoon. “When I first had the MRI, there [...]

What about Ersberg?

We’ve covered two of the goalies, so why not the third? It’s hard not to feel for Erik Ersberg a bit. He really hasn’t done anything wrong during his three seasons with the Kings, and in fact, at times he has been quite good. Yet the consensus seems to be that Ersberg is about to [...]

Bernier ready for prime time?

Jonathan Bernier will be perhaps the most-watched player in Kings training camp. Off the ice, he might not be as easy to recognize as in previous years. Bernier buzzed off most of his hair, the result, he said, of a minor accident that caused him to have a couple stitches in his head. On the [...]

Quick, and slimmed down

The words are practically tied together. When coach Terry Murray says the name Jonathan Quick, it’s almost always followed, in the next breath, by the words “No. 1 goalie.” Murray wants to establish, early and often, that Quick is the Kings’ clear-cut goalie, and eliminate any suggestion of a competition between Quick, Jonathan Bernier and [...]

On the lines

Given how often Terry Murray changed line combinations last season, it’s fair to take this with a grain of salt, but it appears as though the Kings will start the season with new looks on each of their forward lines. Dustin Brown steps into a first-line role on the right side, next to Anze Kopitar [...]

Here’s how the afternoon group is skating… Parse-Stoll-Williams Richardson-Lewis-Westgarth Clifford-Schenn-Moller Clune-Elkins-Holloway Harnden-Czarnik-Meckler Mitchell-Doughty Hickey-Campbell Kolomatis-Fransson Deslauriers-Groulx Zatkoff Jones Berube Zemlak

Saturday morning practice

The first practice session has wrapped up in El Segundo, with the other group just about to go on the ice. First, to clarify the injury situation, off the ice are Marc-Andre Cliche (knee), Matt Greene (shoulder) and Colten Teubert (thumb). Slava Voynov skated this morning but, as thought, as not been cleared for contact. [...]

Morning lines/pairs

Here’s how the first group of Kings is skating this morning… Smyth-Kopitar-Brown Ponikarovsky-Handzus-Simmonds Dw. King-Loktionov-Kozun Nolan-Azevedo-Vey Kaunisto-Weal-Toffoli/Brace Scuderi-Johnson Harrold-Drewiske Martinez-Muzzin Dy. King-Mullen Quick Ersberg Bernier Also on the ice, surprisingly, is Voynov, who is in a gray jersey with no number and might not be cleared for contact yet.

Open Forum time

With just hours to go before the start of training camp, let’s sneak in an Open Forum session. Feel free to ask your Kings/NHL-related questions that you think I, or your fellow readers, might be able/qualified to answer, and I’ll start posting the answers ASAP. Ask away!

Camp groups/schedule

The player groups for the first three days of Kings training camp have been announced. Click below to check them out, as well as a re-posting of the schedule for the first three days. It’s always interesting to see which players are put together in the early days of training camp. Sometimes it means something, [...]

Prospects’ chances

Based on what I’ve seen in the rookie camp and games, I’ve come up with some projections on the likelihood of certain players making the Kings’ roster out of training camp. A couple disclaimers… One, I didn’t include Brayden Schenn, because he has been injured and hasn’t participated. Two, I certainly reserve the right to [...]

Mitchell talks numbers, Kings

New Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell chatted with Heidi Androl about joining the team and shared the story of how Drew Doughty offered to give up his number to Mitchell. Here’s the link to the video, or click below to see it embedded… Willie Mitchell interview

Behind the bench

As I mentioned before, I spent Tuesday’s rookie game behind the Kings’ bench, and also had behind-the-scenes access to the locker room before, during and after the game. It was a fantastic experience and I hope you enjoy reading the story. Big thanks to coach Mark Morris, assistant coach Scott Pellerin, director of hockey operations [...]

Postgame reaction

In Tuesday’s rookie game, there were probably an equal number of positives and negatives for the Kings. Wednesday, it was a clean sweep of negatives over positives. The Kings lost to the Phoenix Coyotes 7-1, allowed four power-play goals on five chances and failed to score a power-play goal in their four chances (they went [...]

FINAL: Coyotes 7, Kings 1

The Kings went 0-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-5 on the penalty kill. That’s a simple explanation for the loss. More from the locker room later…

Coyotes 7-1

The Coyotes improved to 4-for-4 on the power play this afternoon as Geordie Wudrick got his second goal of the game with 3:04 remaining.
