Terry Murray and Dean Lombardi caught an early-morning flight back to L.A., and Murray will be behind the bench at Staples Center tonight with Manchester coaches Mark Morris and Scott Pellerin. Jonathan Quick is scheduled to play the full game tonight. In Phoenix, Jonathan Bernier will get more work, playing at least two periods. Jeff [...]
Postgame notes (Sept. 22)
– After significant flip-flopping, the Kings’ goals were awarded to Michal Handzus, John Zeiler, Brad Richardson and Justin Williams. Jarret Stoll had two assists and Williams had one assist for the only other two-point night for the Kings. – Jonathan Bernier played the entire game in goal, stopped 21 of 23 shots and shut out [...]
FINAL: Kings 4, Avalanche 2
The Kings rallied from a 2-0 second-period deficit and won behind goals from Michal Handzus, John Zeiler, Brad Richardson and Justin Williams. Jarret Stoll had two assists and Williams also had an assist. Jonathan Bernier went the distance in goal as the Kings unofficially outshot the Avalanche 42-23. Some game notes to come…
Kings 4, Avalanche 2
The Kings scored their fourth consecutive goal to take a two-goal lead 7:29 into the third period. The 4-on-4 goal came after Andrew Campbell sent a pass to the far post. Justin Williams got there, and tipped the puck past Grahame to make it 4-2. Jarret Stoll also got an assist.
Kings 3, Avalanche 2
The Kings took their first lead of the game 4:32 into the third period. Justin Williams took the puck up the right side and centered to Brad Richardson, who beat Grahame with a backhand shot. Thomas Hickey started the play and got an assist.
Scoring disputes
Officially, the Kings’ goals are being credited to Bud Holloway (from Jarret Stoll and Peter Harrold) and Thomas Hickey (from John Zeiler and Corey Elkins) rather than Michal Handzus and Brad Richardson. Seems as though there is some dispute as to which players should get credit. Personally, I’d trust Nick and Daryl far more than [...]
End of second: 2-2
Quite a busy period for both teams. There were three goals and two fights, and the Kings were unable to score on a two-minute, 5-on-3 advantage late in the second period. The Kings are now 1-for-9 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill. As for the fights, Daryl “Larry Merchant” Evans called [...]
Kings 2, Avalanche 2
Colorado turned to John Grahame in goal, and the Kings greeted him by tying the game. John Zeiler took the puck to the net and, after a scramble in front of the net, Brad Richardson knocked the puck past Grahame to tie the game. Corey Elkins also got an assist with 7:34 remaining in the [...]
Avalanche 2, Kings 1
The Kings scored on their seventh power play of the game to make it 2-1. Jarret Stoll took the shot, and Michal Handzus knocked in the rebound at the 7:32 mark. Peter Harrold also got an assist. [EDIT: Officially, Bud Holloway was initially credited with the goal, then it was changed to Handzus.]
Avalanche 2, Kings 0
Former Kings defenseman Kyle Quincey beat Bernier with a slap shot 5:06 into the second period to make it 2-0 Colorado. Milan Hejduk provided a screen right in front of the net.
End of first: Avs 1-0
The Kings went 0-for-4 on the power play in the first period, including a 41-second 5-on-3 advantage. The Kings went 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. The Kings outshot the Avalanche 13-6 in the first period. Thanks to Adam Foote’s double-minor for elbowing and roughing on John Zeiler, the Kings will be on the power play [...]
Avalanche 1, Kings 0
Philippe Dupuis scored a 4-on-4 goal 2:28 into the first period to give the Avalanche a lead. Dupuis beat Jonathan Bernier high, after the Kings got a power play 28 seconds into the game but quickly took an Alec Martinez hooking penalty. Craig Anderson is in goal for Colorado.
Smyth in top form
If you’ve heard Dean Lombardi speak at any length, you’re probably aware that he’s prone to making grand statements that can carry a bit of hyperbole, particularly when he’s excited about something. So it was interesting, at the start of training camp, to hear Lombardi say that Ryan Smyth had showed up for camp “in [...]
Kopitar’s next step
We’ll go with a “first line” theme today, and naturally that starts with the center and the Kings’ leading scorer from last season, Anze Kopitar. Kopitar finished with career highs of 34 goals and 47 assists last season, and can he get better? A simple analysis of last season would suggest that he can. Kopitar [...]
Preseason streaming
The Kings will stream tomorrow night’s exhibition game — the game against Phoenix at Staples Center — live on LAKings.com. I will post a link to the stream before the game. Based on this morning’s practice, it appears as though this will be the game lineup… Smyth-Kopitar-Brown Clune-Lewis-Simmonds Clifford-Schenn-Moller King-Loktionov-Kozun Mitchell-Doughty Johnson-Scuderi Muzzin-Fransson Quick
Is Moller ready?
Following up on the Trevor Lewis item from yesterday, Oscar Moller is another young player who is in the mix for a forward spot, and Moller looked strong in today’s scrimmage, with one goal and a couple other chances. It’s been an up-and-down ride for Moller so far, even though he’s only 21. A big [...]
TV/radio schedule announced
The Kings’ TV schedule has (finally) been announced, and 77 games will be televised this season, between Fox Sports West, Prime Ticket, NBC, Versus and KDOC. Bob Miller and JIm Fox will do 70 games, while one game is tentatively schedule for NBC, five more are on Versus and one will be a Ducks telecast [...]
Who goes where?
Earlier, I posted the roster for this week’s two exhibition road games, and it’s much heavier on NHL-caliber forwards than defensemen or goalies. Veterans such as Handzus, Ponikarovsky, Richardson, Stoll and Williams will make the trip, while Drewiske and Harrold are the only defensemen who spent a majority of last season in the NHL Today, [...]
Second chance for Lewis?
Trevor Lewis’ 2009-10 season went downhill fast, and dramatically. Lewis made the Kings’ roster, coming out of training camp, as the fourth-line center, but after appearing in five of the first 10 games, he was assigned to Manchester, never to be seen again in Los Angeles. Even worse, injuries — including a significant shoulder injury [...]
Ersberg update
As posted earlier, Erik Ersberg will not make the trip to Denver and Phoenix. Ersberg suffered a hand injury when he was hit by a shot during practice Sunday, but Terry Murray said Ersberg might get some playing time during Thursday’s exhibition home game against Phoenix. MURRAY: “Everything is fine. We had it x-rayed and [...]
