The teams traded second-period goals and the Kings maintained their four-goal lead despite being outshot 16-6 in the period.
Kings 5, Ducks 1
The Kings got their four-goal lead back with 7:40 remaining in the second period. Dustin Brown fed a nice, short pass to Michal Handzus, who went to the net. McElhinney stopped Handzus’ wrist shot but seemed to lose track of the rebound, and Handzus tapped it in. Brown and Drew Doughty got assists.
Kings 4, Ducks 1
The Ducks got on the board 3:12 into the second period. Todd Marchant got the puck behind the net, beat Davis Drewiske to the front of the net and beat Quick from close range.
End of first: Kings 4-0
Shots were 23-7 in favor of the Kings in the first period. Ducks will be on the power play for the first 1:24 of the second period. The forward lines were posted here this morning. On defense, it’s Drew Doughty with Willie Mitchell, Jack Johnson with Jake Muzzin and Thomas Hickey with Davis Drewiske.
Kings 4, Ducks 0
Jack Johnson made it a four-goal Kings lead with 2:28 remaining in the first period. With five Ducks between Johnson and the net, Johnson ripped a slap shot that cleanly beat McElhinney. Justin Williams and Brad Richardson picked up assists.
Kings 3, Ducks 0
Ryan Smyth’s even-strength goal, with 7:57 remaining in the first period, put the Kings up 3-0. Smyth picked up a rebound in front of the net and scored on a backhand from a tight angle. Willie Mitchell and Anze Kopitar were credited with assists. Shots, unofficially, are 16-3 in favor of the Kings.
Kings 2, Ducks 0
Dustin Brown opened the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal 7:32 into the first period. The Kings controlled the puck for more than a minute with the two-man advantage, and Brown picked up a rebound on the left side of the net and scored. Assists went to Jack Johnson and Anze Kopitar. The Kings, still on [...]

Centers of attention
As previously posted, the two young centers who are in contention for a roster spot will get a long look tonight. Brayden Schenn will center the second line, between Brad Richardson and Justin Williams, while Andrei Loktionov will center Kyle Clifford and Kevin Westgarth. Chances are increasingly good that the Kings will keep either Schenn [...]
Greene update
They’re calling it the “Red Cross” jersey in Kings training camp, and Matt Greene was able to shed it for at least one day. Injured players participating in conditioning skating have been on the ice in red jerseys, but today Greene was in the traditional black uniform of a defenseman, skating and taking shots near [...]
Numbers game in goal
Jonathan Bernier has already appeared in two preseason games (five periods, 100 minutes), while Erik Ersberg — who missed several days of practice with a hand injury — has not yet played a minute in preseason. Given that only two games remain in the preseason after tonight, it’s a given that Ersberg will get at [...]

Up front, the Kings are expected to skate as follows against Anaheim tonight… Smyth-Kopitar-Brown Richardson-Schenn-Williams Ponikarovsky-Handzus-Simmonds Clifford-Loktionov-Westgarth Both Thomas Hickey and Jake Muzzin will play on defense, and Jonathan Quick is scheduled to play the entire game in goal. A reminder that tonight’s game will be streamed on LAKings.com — for those within the Fox [...]
Down to 29 (sort of)
The Kings made their four roster cuts yesterday, essentially taking them down to 29 NHL-caliber players. The maximum number of healthy players the Kings can carry at the start of the season is 23, although Terry Murray said the other day that he wasn’t sure whether the Kings would carry 22 or 23 at the [...]
Three games, three goalies
So far, there hasn’t been much competition between Jonathan Bernier and Erik Ersberg, because Ersberg hasn’t been able to compete. Bernier has started two games and played five periods, while Ersberg (who injured his hand last week) has been able to do nothing but practice. That won’t change Tuesday, as Terry Murray said that No. [...]
Rookies to battle it out
The big “winners” of the day for the Kings were Thomas Hickey and Jake Muzzin. Three defensive prospects — Andrew Campbell, Johan Fransson and Alec Martinez — left the locker room, while Hickey and Muzzin remained. With only eight healthy defensemen left on the roster, and six — Doughty, Mitchell, Johnson, Scuderi, Drewiske and Harrold [...]
Moller back to Manchester
Oscar Moller raised expectations for himself two years ago when, in his second NHL training camp, he made the Kings’ roster at the start of the season. Moller spent two months with the Kings before he left to represent Sweden in the 2008 World Junior Championships, and Moller injured his shoulder in that tournament. Since [...]
Monday practice update
In additionn to the four roster cuts, Marc-Andre Cliche will be headed to Manchester if he clears waivers. Ray Kaunisto, Colten Teubert and Viatcheslav Voynov also technically will stay on the Kings’ roster, but are injured and eventually Manchester-bound. The Kings now essentially have 29 players in camp, although that includes the injured Matt Greene [...]
Today’s cuts
The Kings will officially announce cuts today, but Oscar Moller, Johan Fransson, Alec Martinez and Andrew Campbell are not on the ice this morning, so those are the four. Scott Parse (sore toe) is also not skating, and Brad Richardson is once again taking his place on the second line.
NHL or juniors
In the time that I’ve been covering the Kings, it’s hard to remember a training camp that has held so much competition for spots, particularly among young players who might be ready to take the jump to the NHL. Brayden Schenn certainly fits into that category. In an ideal situation, Schenn probably would start this [...]
Sunday practice update
Similar to yesterday, the Kings went through another two-hour session of intense drills and conditioning skating. The ever-popular 2-on-2 “pit” drill made an appearance also. Scott Parse, still feeling the effects of his sore toe, skated for the first hour but then didn’t return to the ice for the second half of the session. Brad [...]
