Lombardi on Fan 590

Dean Lombardi was on Toronto radio, The Fan 590, talking all things Kings, including the 1,314th mention of Ilya Kovalchuk. (doesn’t it ever get old?) For those playing along at home, the first mention of the New York Yankees comes at the 1:21 mark.

  1. Hate to hijack a thread, but to all Bakersfield area Kings fans, a deal has been struck to get us to a Kings game, through the Bakersfield Condors: (please let this link through, Rich!)

    http://people.bakersfield.com/home/Blog/CondorsTalk/61557

    The text of the post from Bill Allison, now of the Kings:

    Former Bakersfield Condors account executive Bill Allison, now working in that capacity for the Los Angeles Kings, has put together a Bakersfield Pride Night for Bakersfield fans who want to take in a Kings game.
    Tickets prices for the Nov. 6 game against the Nashville Predators at Staples Center (the Condors are in Stockton that weekend and who in their right mind wants to go to stockton?).
    Individual tickets are $93 for100level season (A saving of 7 bucks); $61 for 200 levels seats (save $6) and $31 for 300 level seats (a saving of $4).
    But the real bargains are for groups of 15 or more with the pricing at $84, $53 and $23 for the various levels. Also, the first three groups of 15 or more will get a pregame photo on the ice and a commemorative LA Kings/Bakersfield puck.
    Contact Allison at (213) 742-7216 or ballison@lakings.com

    Thanks, Rich!

    Are there any video replays of last night’s goals just for reference’s sake? I missed Brown’s goal (I know it was on the 5-on-3) because I had popcorn spilled on me at the moment of the goal :)

    @Jonathan,

    It was a tap in on a net scramble. Nice goals that he should get standing around the crease like that I hope all season.

    @vindogla,

    Hate to bring this up… well, not really. The Kings have playoff aspirations this year, and they should; defensively, they’ve looked really strong all year. And without Greene! When Greene comes back, and whichever one of the rookies that makes the squad plays the same way (he needs to; Hickey, Muzzin, Drewiske, or whoever needs to know that making the roster out of camp isn’t it. They could always be demoted, so they need to play every single game like it’s a 1-game trial period), our defense is gonna look incredible.

    Also, the Devils have a very strong team. They won their division last year, and they’ll really benefit from getting Kovalchuk for a full season, Volchenkov and Tallinder are good additions (and should help ease the pain of losing Martin to PIT, who of course, also got Zbynek Michalek), and I’ve always been an Arnott fan going back to his first stint with the Devils. And of course, Brodeur shows no signs of slowing down. They have a good chace of making it to the Finals (They’re like SJ of the East though: great regular season, and playoff letdowns.

    (Now, the Devils actually weren’t my pick to win the Atlantic. But they can win it.)

    Realistically, the Devils can make the Finals. I think the Kings *can* make it, as well. Wouldn’t that be an epic battle? It would certainly be exciting… not to mention, we could try to do what Anaheim couldn’t, and beat the Devils :)

    It seemed like the whole interview centered around Kovalchuk. Yawn! I wanted to hear him talk about the Kings.

    Dean talks about having to sign the kids, he named a goalie, it wasn’t Quick. Just more writing on the wall. I like quick, but unless he stops givin up SOFT goals he won’t lead us to lord Stanley

    quisp Reply:

    @Pesus,

    Possibly because Quick is already signed.

    I think DL is the G W Bush of the NHL with the nick names and all. I find it kinda funny! Kovilgate just wont go away….and I think DL dident rly want him here… an im all for that If JMFJ keeps playing like he did last night! That Kids a BEAST! Quick needs a constant supply of smelling salts during time outs and water breaks! Other than that how must quacks fans/management feel after last nights beat down?! Sbesa vs schenn was a joke and westgarth will shave that porno stash of peros before to long!

  11. Dominick says:

    Too bad DL got cut off at the end. I was interested in what he was starting to talk about when they ran out of time. I hope DL finnishes his point on another interview. Great stuff. I know I sound like a kool-aid drinker(so! deal with it), but we’re truly lucky to have such smart GM.

  12. KC23 says:

    I have to admit my cup run ith over with the DL kool aid. I really do believe in his methodology. Any system has flaws, but DL seems to have the fewest. It really keeps the Kings strong over the long run.

  13. Mike in Oregon says:

    Count me in the Kool-Aid crew too. This guy has done such an impressive job with this team. You can’t say he “rebuilt” anything, because no Kings GM prior to him built anything but total mediocrity. You gotta take your hat off to him and give him well deserved praise. Now that Kovi-gate is over, I am SO glad he didn’t sign with Kings. Who’s to say Kopi is not the game breaker? Who’s to say it’s not Schenn? Lokti? Moller? It’s great stuff. DL, you da man! Anthony, RIP bro (sorry to revisit that folks).

    luc20rules Reply:

    @Matt George, Not only that, the structure clearly shows that they are going for 1 good year then selling the team. Otherwise whats the importance of the 2 years at 6 mil/yr, then 11 mil/yr for the next 5 years. The whole thing stinks, I just can’t believe the league didn’t come down harder on them. The NHL caved and approved Kovi’s contract out of fear of losing a high profile player to the KHL.

    5holer Reply:

    @luc20rules, @Matt George, Vanderbeek is suffering a slow financial death in NJ. When McMullen passed away, the minority owner, Vanderbeek, was left holding the bag with no Capital (declining like everyone else’s is!). That winky deal for Kovy was to put him in a better Saleable position for the Franchise. He could dump at a profit or a wash with Kovy in fold, but big loss without him. Its a good old boys league still and Gary saved his NJ owner with passing on the bogus deal with tentacles attached. But LAK got USED and Abused in the deal! A Kovy lover I am not, but a goal scorer is a needed commodity here, anywhere! BTW don’t shoot the player when he had nothing to do with any of this Big Boys Stuff! A fish stinks at the head(Louie and Grossman) not at the stick(Kovy)! So don’t stick it to the innocent, aim higher! I believe DL alluded to getting worked when he said something stunk in the pile that ominous Friday before the 102ML Pile of dung came down! My nickles worth.

    @5holer,

    Don’t agree. As DL stated in this very interview … for Kovi it was about making more money than Ovechkin, period. He couldn’t care less what it does to their cap space. If Ovechkin gets 60 plus goals I’ll still be glad we didn’t get the punk.

    Matt George Reply:

    @5holer,

    Interesting about Jersey’s financial sitch.

    I personally don’t hold Kovalchuk NOR Bettman as the villain here.

    Grossman. I’m quite sure the leak came from him (tho, again, I have absolutely NO way of knowing that as fact .. just a gut feeling).

    I also grow very tired of all the Bettman bashing … the guy has screwed up several times no doubt but on this one … I’m right there with him. Spank the bitches.

    I am starting to love this Lombardi guy. It’s like he’s the first Kings GM to think in terms of infra-structure.

    Dave Taylor had his moments, but generally it was in the vet-picking department.

    @tuan jim,
    Welcome to the party. Some of us have understood that this is what he was all about going on, oh, four years now.

    puck73 Reply:

    @tuan jim, Agree about DL. As far as Dave Taylor was concerned, he did a ggreat job on trades such as Deadmarsh and Miller for Blake, Allison for Murray and Stumpel and Palffy for basically minor leaguers. He also drafted some good forwards like Brown, Fro, and Kopi. Where Taylor failed miserably was on drafting defensemen and Goalies..he sucked at it, and ultimately it was a hole that he couldnt climb out of.

    Rich–Offer thanks to those who provided the streaming. I was curious if it had come up in previous posts and in your interviews with DL regarding the parallels and differences as to his building process with the Kings and his process in San Jose. San Jose is obviously a well drafted team that has acquired premier players (i.e. Thorton, Boyle and Heatly) to compliment the core players.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @Bonvivant1, Exactly, Lombardi built the core of that team that has been consistent for so long. Interestingly, he was fired because he couldnt get the team to the finals. Since that was the case, then I have one question..why does Doug Wilson still have that gig ? Last time I checked, he hasnt got the Sharks to the finals either.

    [Reply]

    Bonvivant1 Reply:

    @puck73,

    You would think the pressure would be greater on Wilson because of his recent trades.

    I have a feeling that Lombardi has a trade up his sleeve within the next few months now that he has assessed our prospects. Obviously this is contingent on the availability of certain players that will fill holes and how well the team does the first half of the season.
