Painful night

According to Adrian Dater of the Denver Post, the Colorado Avalanche had a rough night against the Kings, beyond their 4-2 loss. David Koci suffered a jaw injury during his fight with Kevin Westgarth, and Peter Mueller suffered a concussion. Westgarth apparently won that fight pretty decisively, and it’s unknown when exactly Mueller suffered his unfortunate injury.

    c’mon man, I’m glad we won but Mueller is only 22 and this could probably mean his career.

    @Noel,

    Yeah come on.. Peter Mueller is a great young player. Very unfortunate to get a concussion in preseason.. Especially the first games of the the season. As of the broken jaw..:) :)

    See you guys tonight!!

    @Noel, I agree, I dont think anybody wants to here the news that someone got knocked out of the game because of a concussion. That being said, this organization is starting to get more physical and defensive minded.

    @puck73,

    Unless they’re joking that it’s Deadmarsh karma…

    But yeah, as I say below, I hope it’s not too bad. Never want to win a game because of a fluke causing the other teeam to put out a roster less than their best.

    @simonsez,

    Fantastic news that a promising 22 year-old player on the Avs suffered his third significant concussion in his career?

    You are awesome.

    @Jamer, Seriously? You REALLY didn’t catch that? Do you think that the Colbert Report is a hard hitting right wing commentary? Or is this some kind of sarcastic sarcasm that is an extra level above? I can’t decide, but I’m guessing it’s the former, not the later.

    Hey Rich is there any way we can get some footage of the scraps?

    Naturallawyer Reply:

    @chris, I was thinking the same thing… If you go to Frozen Fury you might get to see a rematch, unless it’s a serious injury (like a broken jaw or something).

    While I hope Koci and Mueller make full recoveries, it’s nice to know Westy will be able to cover for the star players on the Kings. Koci is not small.

    Although I didnt watch the game, I did listen to the whole game and it sounded like the Kings played the majority of the game in the Avs zone and on the PP. Now that we see the report above, that pretty much confirms it. Also, it is unbelievable that the Kings controlled the game with a lot of players from Manchester in there. WOW ! What a great time to be a Kings fan !

    Glad to see the guys put up a good fight against a strong roster the Avs put up last night… but sad to hear about Mueller. I’ve been a fan of him for years, and I just hope it’s not too bad. He has great potential.

    Hey Rich, can you find out if Kevin Westgarth is Native (American/Canadian) Indian? If he is, he’d be the second for the Kings – I miss watching Gary Sargent play. And PLEASE find a way to show us a clip of that Westie/Koci fight.

    Not to my knowledge. Perhaps a very small part, though, both he and Brett have always struck me as more Gallic in appearance than Native.

    Real sad news about Meuller. Don’t wish that on anyone.

    On the up side I don’t think that there will be as many teams taking liberties on guys like DD and Kopitar. I remember a game in Calgary last year where someone just nailed Kopitar with a cheap shot on an iceing type touch up situation and next to nothing was done about it.

    I hope Westy can play good enough to stay in there.

    @KC23, For some reason, Calgary was super physical with us last year & took many runs at Dustin Brown in particular IIRC… I guess it was a good strategy, because we had trouble beating them last season…

    As I previously stated, I was at the game last night.

    Mueller was still in there in the 3rd period as much as I remember, but he did get creamed, and I mean hit HARD down in the corner at one point in the 3rd. I did not see who hit him, but I believe it may have been Ponikarovsky.

    As for the Westgarth/Koci fight. Westy landed a good solid 5 or 6 hard shots, including two serious uppercuts. I give Koci credit for staying on his feet, and at the end, Westy was actually holding him up (I suspect to keep Koci from getting hurt). He even patted Koci on the back, but as both were skating to the boxes, you could see Koci feeling around his jaw and kind of flexing it, so I’m not shocked he got hurt. Westgarth really nailed him with multiple shots to the chin.

    koci is big and mean, but is always getting badly hurt in fights. he’s the one who was not only breaking his nose, but rebreaking the original break in fights a couple seasons ago.
