The answer to the summer’s biggest question has arrived. Willie Mitchell will wear No. 33 for the Kings this season. Kevin Westgarth, who had worn that number during his brief stint with the Kings (and in Manchester) will switch to No. 19.

That’s one heck of a great number for an LA Kings defenseman.

@Little Willy,
Larry Robinson was a VERY intimidating presence on the ice, esp. in his early years in Montreal.
I graphically recall one of those Saturday morning nationally televised game when the Kings just got creamed…..Mike Corrigan got a little feisty with #19, and was immediately challenged to a fight by LR; instead, Corrigan skated away backwards, and then turned and “ran”
from Robinson; the only time I think I’ve ever seen that level of intimidation….
it may have been the same game: Billy Smith in goal for the Kings, in his rookie year, letting in bad goal after bad goal….far from his later Cup winning form…

@Real 7,
Larry Robinson and Billy Smith were on the Kings in the same season? Huh?

@Real 7,
I remember that game too! It was crazy watching Robinson chasing Corrigan around the ice. Was the same same game Bob Murdoch fought someone for running Rogie behind the net? Oh the good old days!
Good choice!
Go Kings!!

#19 SHOULD BE IN THE RAFTERS.

@LBlocal, I concur….
Butch was the 1st really popular King….
I was there in one of his 1st games in his rookie season….his hustle just ignited the crowd with excitement….it was electric…
there goes Goring! he’s all over the ice! he intercets a pass! he steals the puck & breaks away! he shoots! he scores!

@LBlocal,
For Kyle Calder, right?
Butch was before my time… but from what I’ve heard from everybody, and stories I’ve heard from my father, he sounds like the first guy to “have the crown tattooed on his ass”. And if there’s a single Kings player who deserves to have his number in the rafters (aside from the obvious five we already have), Butch is that guy.
By the way, I know it’s Wikipedia, but is it true that “In the 1970s, on a road trip with the Kings, a burglar broke into his hotel room and stole everything that belonged to his roommate but left all of Goring’s clothes hanging in the closet untouched” because of his poor fashion sense? (The link doesn’t work)

@LBlocal,
Butch should be up on the wall and in the hall of fame. The few years he played with Bob Nevin and Danny Maloney were great. It is a undisputed fact that until the NY Islanders got Goring they didn’t win the Cup ! And his scoring totals while with the Kings, Islanders, and Bruins are Hall of Fame caliber. He was a top NHL center for over 10 years in the league while on both an over achieving team and a Stanley Cup team.
The same is true for Bernie Nicholls. 19 & 9 should be on the wall and in the Hall!

I miss palffy :/
How was modin wearing 33 last year and westgarth?
As for Willie he is a class act and I couldn’t be happier to have him as a king.

@KH,
Westgarth didn’t play for the Kings at all in 2009-10. He wore #33 in Manchester, but of course never had to for LA.

The greatest move the KINGS ever made was hire Rich Hammond!!! Finally gave this organization some much needed CLASS AND PROFESSIONALISM!!!!
