Best wishes to Bob Miller, who is scheduled to undergo a non-emergency surgical procedure tomorrow, with the hope that he will be back and ready for the Kings’ season opener on Oct. 9. Incidentally, the home opener (Oct. 12) will be Bob’s 72nd birthday. It’s been said many times, but it can’t be said enough. Bob is a treasure to the Kings and the broadcasting community, so I’m sure everyone will join me in wishing him well.

I met Bob for the first time in the strangest place; Richfield, Ohio, which evokes some memories. It was the season opener in 1976, Kings vs. Cleveland Barons. That franchise folded rather quickly; if you were ever there you would understand that the arena was poorly located, midway between Cleveland and Akron, sort of in the middle of nowhere. The population centers were miles away. My brother, who I was visiting, although a native Ohioan, had no idea where Richfield was, but my sister-in-law said she could find it, so off we went to find Richfield. About an hour or so later we arrived at the arena. There didn’t seem to be much traffic around, and we wondered if we’d come on the wrong night or something. No, we were just a little early, so we got good seats at center ice, and I soon spotted Bob not far away, so I approached him and struck up a conversation, catching up on the latest Kings news, since I’d been out of touch for a week or two. I remember telling him about me being a season seat holder the past two years, and commuting nearly a hundred miles each way to the games, and so on. I came away with the feeling that Bob was a terrific guy, who seemed truly interested in my story. Although it was only for a few minutes, Bob made that night memorable. The game not so memorable, a 2-2 tie.
Get well quickly, Bob; we’ll all be holding good thoughts for you tomorrow.

Kings voice Bob Miller to undergo ‘precautionary’ surgery
September 9, 2010 | 3:35 pm
Bob Miller, the Kings’ play-by-play announcer since 1973 and a Hockey Hall of Fame media honoree, is scheduled to undergo what he called a precautionary surgical procedure on Friday and will miss the Kings’ Fan Fest Saturday.
However, Miller said in a phone conversation that he hopes to be ready for the Kings’ upcoming season, which begins Oct. 9 and will be his 38th in the broadcast booth. The problem is not life-threatening, he said, but he didn’t want to elaborate.
Miller, who will be 72 next month, said he expects to spend a few days in the hospital. “It’s the only time we could do it and still be OK for the start of the season,” he said of the procedure.
All the best to Miller, a walking encyclopedia of Kings history — his Jack Kent Cooke stories and imitations are hilarious — and one of the top broadcasters in hockey or any other sport.

Bob is the TRUE King. Known him since the early 70′s both as a Season Ticket Holder and a friend. Actually had Bob come speak at career day at Paul Revere Jr. High School when I was a student. Went to his Broadcasting School he used to work with in the early years. He always went out of his way at the Forum, Staples, Road Trips etc to walk across and say hello to me. Got to see him last year in Nashville when the Kings were in town. Bob, from my family to you and your, best wishes for a successful surgery and speedy recovery. Hurry back!

Get well Quick Bob…Hope you’re back and ready for the season opener. It wouldn’t feel right without both you and Jim talking to us.

When attending games at Staples, I wear my white (old home) Chevy sweater. It has no numbers and no player’s name on the back,
It has but two autographs, Jim Fox and BOB MILLER. I wear it with pride.
I’ve chatted with Bob on several occasions over the years. He’s always been gracious. But, I don’t think he really understands that he is the direct link between the fans and the Kings. But that’s Bob. Honest and enthusiastic.
My favorite recent quote of his was when Oscar Moller first started playing. Somewhere in the second period of the game, Bob finally says, “You know, when this kid gets the puck, I’m just gonna start saying ‘he shoots’!”
Wise. Wise-cracking. Accurate. That is Bob Miller.
Best thoughts to you, Bob, and we’ll all get back together soon at the drop of the puck.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.Bob is the CHick Hearn of the Kings, can’t listen to a game without him

I recall the greatest announcers in the game danny gallivan and foster hewitt Bob compares to them without a doubt !!!!!
Here is why The great one is truly the greatest of them all what a line !!!!!!
And i will never forget his comment albeit a little over board when Jarri Kurri got the hatrick his first game with the kings Bob shouted how do you like the trade now no doubt Bob is one of the best !!!!!

Well I for one am pretty upset with him and the Kings staff. Why wasn’t he given a post-season checkup? Why did he wait and have this elective surgery just before the beginning of the season? Poor decision. I tell you, decisions like this weren’t being made while Bush was president!!!
Thats my Friday morning attempt at comedy. Best of luck and a speedy recovery to you Bob. You’re the best.

We’ve been blessed in LA to have the best announcers around.
Bob Miller and Vin Scully have such a cadence to them that when they call the game you don’t have to watch to know when something is imminent and when something is about to happen.
I’ve met Bob a lot since I had season tickets right above him in section 318 and he’s just a super nice guy along with Nick, Darryl, and Jim.
I wish you a speedy recovery Bob. We love Jim but when he filled in last year I thought he was going to blow an artery trying to keep up. lol
