According to the Kings, prospect Brayden Schenn suffered a knee injury during a training session in Canada. Schenn is headed to Los Angeles for an MRI tomorrow, and at the moment there is no timetable for his return to the ice. Schenn recently completed training camp with his junior team, the Brandon Wheat Kings, but it’s unknown whether he was hurt on or off the ice. More updates tomorrow…
Aww heck. I was really looking forward to seeing if he could break through this year. Now his roster spot will either go to someone else, or a trade, and he will have to wait for a call up.
Bummer.

Well.. There you have it.. More bad news, I bet this really turns the heat up on DL to make a trade

those were my thoughts exactly….Schenn injury is bad newz for sure….one of the favored rookies to make the team this year, and very highly regarded by all hockey knowledgeable people….a forthcoming trade will now be viewed as more necessary than optional…

@AK47, we have 4 or 5 guys who could play center 6 minutes a game. This is not a game changer. It is better for his development in the long term anyway.

I don’t think he would of broke the line up anyway. He needs more developement. The guy needs to bulk up a bit, his body is still maturing. Moeller was/is much more likely to make the team imho.

I only hope we don’t have a repeat of that season a while back we led the league in man games lost. (knocking on wood!!!)
A deep bruise or mild strain or less would be acceptable. Anything more serious might impair his development or his “chance”.

The MRI will tell all. If he heard or fealt a pop then see ya later ACL. I had my fixed in June this year…no fun let me tell ya! Get well soon Brayden
[Reply]
Figures. Right after I posted my training camp scenario that (Of course) included Schenn, this gets posted right after. Hopefully it’s not too serious and he can still have a shot at camp. If not, then it would seem to me the 4th line job is Moller’s to lose (and share with Richie), even though it’s been said in order to be effective he needs to be top 6.
Just an open door for one of the newbies to impress the hell out of people at camp this year.

@Cynic,
Right after you posted your scenario!!! Which I liked very much. The open door for the newbies means they not only need to impress but to follow through and keep going and not just be happy they make it. That leads to a situation like Frolov being “comfortable” with just being here and not wanting or needing to continue to improve.
I have a bad feeling about Schenn, and I hope I’m wrong. If no one really impresses at camp, will that force DL to go get someone and at what cost???

I’m with you on Schenn. My gut says it’s not good also, although when you’re a longtime Kings fan, you’re gut reactions are ALWAYS bad.
I think this bodes well for an interesting camp. We’re overblown at center, so the competition will be FIERCE! I would not be surprised to see an injury or two just from camp with guys laying out to make the squad. Could be VERY interesting. My darkhorse is Lewis this year. He could be a real surprise.

Kings fans amuse me sometimes. The sky is always falling. Chill people. There hasn’t even been a diagnosis yet.
I especially love the assertion that Schenn’s injury somehow paints the Kings into a corner and makes DL think he “has” to make a trade now. No offense guys but if a completely unproven rookie had an NHL roster spot locked up before rookie camp even starts, the Kings are in worse shape then we all thought. I’m sure that when DL got off the phone after learning about the injury he DID NOT think “Dam#?@t now I gotta go out and make a trade.”
Schenn was probably not making the Kings this year anyway. Too many forwards ahead of him on the depth chart.

I agree with you completely except for Schenn not making the squad. DL said it quite a few times that this was a must-prove training camp for Schenn. “Would he be as hungry as Simmonds was 2 seasons ago?” DL was hoping for that this training camp, so it’s not improbable that Schenn would have made the team.

How about Simmonds three years ago? He was hungry but he was also undersized, unknowned, unexperienced and ended up not making the team only to come back year later better prepared to make the team…like Schenn will.

Completely agree! Schenn was going to have a hard time making the club out of camp even if he skated his arse off because of his cap hit.
I saw him starting the year in Manchester and being the first one they call up. I really believe until Stoll or Williams contracts are up or they get moved he really had no shot at making the club right out of camp…not with so many other prospects with a lower cap hit.

@Barry’s Mullet, Schenn is too young to play in Manchester. Unless Brandon Wheat Kings released their rights to him he has to play either in the NHL or with Brandon until he’s 20 years old. At least the last time I heard that was how the rule goes.

@Paul From Oxnard, Even if the Wheat Kings released is rights for some incredibly stupid reason, he still isn’t AHL eligible. Players drafted out of the CHL , and under the age of 20, can ONLY play in the NHL or Junior (at least until their Junior season is over). Also, once a player is returned to Junior, they cannot be called back up, unless it is a 1 game emergency fill in like Schenn did last season versus Vancouver.

Sections 114 is on the goal line on the left wing, 113 is over the left wing face-off circle.
117 and 118 would be the corresponding sections on the right wing.
Go Kings go!

Wait, that didn’t happen? Well… okay, what about the re-signing of Randy Jones or Raitis Ivanans?
Actually, this has been a pretty good offseason. Sad to see it didn’t last.
In reality, our Top 3 centers are Kopitar, Stoll, and Handzus. I’d have loved to see Schenn crack the roster (and who knows if he still can), but I don’t want him to make it just to get 4th-line minutes.
This really isn’t too devastating. Of course, I don’t know how severe the injury is, but it’s not like he was gonna score 40 goals for us this year anyway. Give it some time.

Time to make up our minds…Dont get any offense through trades because we are going to give our kids the chance OR our kids still are not ready to crack the line up yet (When not injured). Quit selling us a bunch of goods and changing tunes. What are we doing to get better? Mitchell to me is a great pick up but DL dont compare him to Stoll on the ” we have not had any problems with stoll concussions” Mitch is being called on to play a way different game then Stoll. Poni is not the scorer Fro was (Even though Fro played every 3rd or 4th game hard)So where does this leave us as the off season comes to a close? I am a bit worried here.

I know I stated this previously, but I wish we could have gotten Selanne for a season or two because he would have been a good bridge player for the youngsters and really taken the pressure off them. Brandon Sun – PRINT EDITION – Schenn to have MRI on knee
By: James Shewaga
9/09/2010 1:00 AM
Brandon Wheat Kings centre Brayden Schenn is expected to undergo a precautionary MRI exam today in Los Angeles after suffering what is believed to be a minor knee injury in practice on Tuesday.
While wild speculation ran rampant on Internet sites that Schenn may have suffered a major injury, Wheat Kings head coach/general manager Kelly McCrimmon said initial indications are it doesn’t appear to be serious.
“I think it’s pretty minor, just tweaked his knee in practice (Tuesday) and didn’t skate (Wednesday),” McCrimmon said. “And he was scheduled to fly to L.A. (today), so they will pick up on it there.”
While Schenn was unavailable for comment, his father Jeff confirmed via telephone from Saskatoon that an MRI is scheduled for today, but also described the injury as minor and doesn’t believe any surgery will be required.
The 19-year-old centre suffered a sprained medial collateral knee ligament in Game 3 of last season’s WHL Eastern Conference final against the Calgary Hitmen, but never missed a game and looked to be in top form during this year’s training camp. He left Tuesday’s practice a little early and was already scheduled to fly to Los Angeles today to attend Kings training camp.
Schenn was drafted fifth overall by the Kings in the 2009 NHL draft and, despite missing a month while playing for Canada’s world junior team, led the Wheat Kings in scoring with 34 goals and 99 points in only 59 regular-season games.
Schenn is one of six Wheat Kings heading off to NHL training camps this week.

@LBlocal, Thanx for that info dude, I feel a little better after reading that. I know that there is no such thing as a “Cant miss” prospect, but when you look at Schenn’s goals, assists, and plus minus in the minors, and the fact that he is only 19 you gotta like this kids chances in the NHL sooner then later.

@puck73,
Next thing we’ll hear from Eklund or Twitter from a reliable source is that Schenn’s leg was severed at the knee by a skate blade and he is currently on his way to Cedar Sinai to get it surgically reattached.
as a Kings fan for over 25 years, I wouldn’t expect anything less than a bit of bad news. It’s like I’ve been here before.
[Reply]
Sort of a bummer.
I was hoping he would shine in camp and make the team.
Oh well..This just opens the door for another young kid to show what he can do to win a job during camp. He wasn’t our only top prospect.
I see no need for DL to make a move because of this injury. It’s a job that must be filled from within. We always hear about the prospects. At some point you go from prospect to player..seems like this would be the time for a couple of them.
The roof falling theory would be if we lost Koppi or DD to injury..not a young kid hoping to make the team.

@nykingfan, The voice of reason…@nykingfan. Now, I know I told you this before but, you absolutely need to make it this season for at least 1 game dude ! Why ? Simple..there are some Kings fans out here who still dont believe, or who have lost their way and your common sense approach will have a calming effect on them.
[Reply]
As Kings fans, we are pre-conditioned to expect the worst, and to make any adversity into the worst possible case.
What we know is that Schenn has a knee injury, and will have an MRI today to determine the extent of the injury. Maybe it is worst case, maybe not. We can hope for the best, and we will know when the results are made public.
As far as how this injury “changes” the season, I think we should hold off a bit on the “damage assessments”.
Schenn was a possibility for making the team, but to think there was a pre-determined role for him, such as 2nd line center, was a prediction, at best.
Schenn’s injury is not good, regardless of the extent. It appears it will impact him at least somewhat in the preseason, and it may in fact cause him to miss time this year. We hope the injury is as insignificant as it can be.
This team is good going into this season. I would honestly make the case that we are certainly better than we were last year, at least on paper. Adding WM, losing the castoffs, gaining the experience from the past season, the younger guys maturing, all leads me to believe that we are a stronger team.
I feel bad for Schenn on a personal level. No one wants to see him deal with this. But, the impact for the Kings season is most likely pretty negligible.
This is less important for the Kings than the need for Brown and JW (to name a couple key players) to have a productive years.
[Reply]
Great take, Rack him !

Hopefully B. Schenn is alright. I was hoping to see him play in at least a few games this year (actually, by a few I mean all of them). Here’s to the injury just being a mild sprain. Get better kid.
