`Kings 1, Canucks 0′

Per reader request, here’s a cool video of Willie Mitchell up in Vancouver, participating in a charity fishing tournament that he helped start as a member of the Canucks. Mitchell won the event with a 47-pound catch, and got in a little pro-Kings dig at the end of the video. Click here for a link to the video, and I will also embed it below. Hopefully the Kings can bring them back for at least a couple of games this season, I think a lot of fans would get a kick out of that !

    @Paul From Oxnard,

    As Quisp has said, the problem is that those contracts hurt the union players and only help the top 1% of the guys because of the way the players are funded.

    This was a bad contract and broke the rules and the NHL and the NHLPA got together to save one guy and NJ and the player don’t get hit for anything. That sucks.

    [Reply]

    USHA#17 Reply:

    @Dan H.,

    To complete Paul’s thought and Quisp’s point:

    Assume a 20 year contract that if front loaded with millions and leaves only a few hundred thousand for each of the last six years

    Front loaded contracts penalize other players via salary being withheld in an escrow account designed to absorb (league wide) payroll overages.

    In a perfect world these “overages” are then made good at the back end of a long, massive contract when the salary becomes very low. So, in theory all is well in the end…if everyone negotiates and plays out the contract in good faith.

    If there is no intent to play out the contract then players are short changed because no funds return to the escrow account (when our superstar is only earning $500K/year) to be distributed back to the players.

    This system was designed with an assumption of good faith in a player’s intent to play out his contract.

    What surprises me is that more players are not speaking out as Mitchell is doing.

    This of course is good news for Ilya because no player in his right mind would check the guy and risk ending Ilya’s career early.

    Seeing Willie Mitchell in the Kings road Jersey that they wore from 1988-1989 to 1997- 1998 sure brings back memories of a certain guy who owned the team from 1988 to 1994. I think in celebration of those days, the Kings ought to bust out a “3rd” jersey in memory of that. You remember the game Monopoly, right? And how one of the landing spaces was “Go to jail” right? Well, what they should do is design a jersey that has Black Iron bars on a white back drop with Mcnalls face behind them ! NOW THATS A JERSEY I WOULD BUY !

    I have said this before, but I think the first month of the season will be very meaningful for the Kings this year. They need to get on top of it right from the beginning. It will be good to see The Whale right on day one.

    Now that the Devs finally got their willful suffering soul, the Kings should be on the phone, perhaps looking to make another deal.

    Lets not forget we all loved Deadmarsh as well. Great guy, hard working individua,l but could not stay healthy. Big time concern here with Mitchell. We are looking to this kid for toughness and grit, but how much will the coaching staff allow with the fear he is one good hit, check, punch or Kopitar trip away from the dreaded ” Upper Body Injury” and a day to day status from Murray? We still need offense and a better 5 on 5 mentality and nose for the goal. Cant wait for Oct for this all to play out…Still steaming over 17 years 102 to 15 years 100 with no penalty, fine or some other kind of message sent. Kovy’s cap is less than Kopy’s cap and he is a proven 45-50 goal scorer.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @rjb, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a little concerned, but as DL said in the Willie Mitchell interview..”I signed Jarret Stoll, and he had 2 concussions previously and since we have had him we havent had a problem”. Also, according to DL, Willie has passed everything that the Kings doctors have required so we will just have to pray that everything works out for Willie and the Kings. Dean also said something that I agree with when he said…With a player like this, the payoff is so huge that it is worth the risk.

    [Reply]

    DougS Reply:

    @puck73, rjb
    The health risk is definitely a concern with Mitchell; there’s no getting around that. I also remember all too well what happened with Deadmarsh. But I agree with puck that he’s been checked out as well as one can expect at this point, and the upside is very high.

    Also, the fact that the contract is only for 2 years limits the risk. If he’s only healthy for part of the term, it’s not like the Kings will be paying him long after he’s become just a bitter memory, as with Cloutier.

    [Reply]

    puck73 Reply:

    @rjb, Oh, and as far as Kovi and the NHL go, totally agree with you 100%. Let’s be honest here, whats the big difference between 17 years 102 mil, and 15 years 100 mil ? The fact is I think alot of us middle class people are sick and tired of these rich people and their lawyers finding loopholes. And also, the NHL got tired of this and just let it go which is too bad because the Kings were the ones that put together the legitimate offer that complied with the rules that the NHL set forth. I agree with you, I hope the Devils get fined, and hopefully they will lose good players that they can no longer keep under the cap.

Well he’s a nobody and his 15 minutes of fame are up!! Remember, this is the same guy that “danced” at Kings games just to get noticed. He sucked then and still sucks now. Do you really think that anybody that has a solid NHL reputation is going to waste their time informing him? If the answer is yes, then buy yourself a subscription to the National Inquier!! On a brighter note, there is a rumor going round that the Kings are interested in trading for Fisher from Ottawa, interesting thought but I say PASS and go after someone at the trade deadline. Let’s see if Schenn, Loktionov, Kozun, Clifford or some other prospect rises to the occassion. With our defense and goaltending, we can afford to see what develops with our prospects. Also, I truly feel that Williams is going to step up and be a factor!!

    [Reply]

    Dominick Reply:

    @LucLivesOn,
    I agree with you on Willy. Last year was hardly his fault. It was just an unfortunate accident(getting tied up with Kopi). There is no gaurantee that it won’t happen again, but at least it wasn’t some lack of conditioning, or playing habbit(like playing with your head down) that caused the injury.

    Willy’s corsi number(16.78) and shooting%(9.4) are still above average for right wing NHL players, and the first half of the season he had really great #’s offensively.

    His #’s dipped because he was comming back from an injury and not fully recovered from it. The team didn’t have a better option on the right side going into the playoffs, so he played. So the lack of impact that he had on the team at the end of the season can be a little misleading.

    Gee I hope I don’t get blasted for sticking up for him.lol

That’s very bold and trade offer,at least 2 roster players a prospect and picks or 3 roster players and picks going the other way.. Now if you can remember when the Kings were looking at Heatley,Ottawa wanted Simmer,Tuebert,Kozun,Frolov,JJ,i believe Voynov and Schenn just for Heatley.. Now the Kings are asking for 3 big fish from Ottawa which in turn would probably ask for the entire Manchester Monarchs roster in return… I’m afraid that we will 1 or 2 of our young guns, plus players like Stoll,Williams and or Zues,Hopefully Schenn,Simmer,Kozun,JJ will not be going but like i said that is a bold offer,almost too bold than signing Kovy…….

Unfortunately, he played with double vision and the Kings got whacked in the best of three. What a disappointment after a great season.

    Goring 19 Reply:

    @HeyChief, I remember when that happened. Butchie was lucky he didn’t get it right in the eye. I still have an old goal magazine that has a picture of Butch right at the moment that happened.

    @Goring 19,

    There was a stretch of games that season when Frank St. Marseille couldn’t miss the back of the net if he tried!

    And could forget Brown stepping up in the playoffs that year?

    And Hutchenson. I remember him with a big grin on his face, skating backwards while holding a guy by the ears and repeatedly kneeing the guy in the face.

    It only got better when Hutchenson and Holt would share ice time.

    @USHA#17, wasn’t Frank St. Marseille something! I saw him score a couple of goals against the California Golden Seals (anyone remember them?) He always seemed to have a great backhander. What I really want to know is, at the forum, who would sit in that 1 lonely seat that was all by itself near the pillars in the colonnade section. My hockey buddy and me always get a kick out of that when we think of the “Fabulous Forum”

    USHA#17 Reply:

    @Goring 19

    There used to be a number of guys (and one girl) who used to sit around the top with cassette recorders practicing their play by play.

    When I think of the Forum, aside from hockey it was parties between periods, parking at sears, the scalpers across the street with $5 & $6 tickets and beer at the Melody Bar.

    @Goring 19,

    In my opinion, best KINGS’ TEAM ever. A pre-New Jersey Devils, if you will. Low scoring / Good team defense, and GREAT goaltending by Rogie.
    The off season trade of Harper (heart) and Maloney (soul) to Detroit for Marcel completely changed the chemistry of the team.

    Goring 19 Reply:

    @Hat Trick, yeah, I wasn’t happy when they traded Harper and Maloney. Don’t get me wrong, Marcel was great and everything, and Cooke got the superstar he wanted, but I feel we were a better team with Terry and Danny.

    @Goring 19,

    I was at the playoff game 6 Vs Boston when we came back from 2 down in the 3rd and Butch won it in overtime. IMHO the best game in King’s history. The loudest event of any kind I’ve ever been to. I can still see Butch getting carried off the ice on the King’s sholders. Gives me chills just thinking about it. Can’t believe it is not one of the King’s classic games on NHL game center.

    Goring 19 Reply:

    @KC23, that game I remember very well. Listening to Bob, I remember we were down by a goal and Mike Corrigan was laying on the ice and centered the puck and it went off Gary Cheevers stick that he had dropped and the game was tied. Then Butch scored in OT. Awesome game. I was at that series as well when Dionne got the hat trick against the Bruins in a 6-4 win. Of course the best playoff game I ever went to was the Miracle on Manchester. I can still see Jerry Buss leaving his special section when the Kings were down 5-0 Of course we know what happened next…..

    So im wondering do we not have an enforcer this year?? No one to respond to BS??

    [Reply]

    Real 9 Reply:

    @pr0cess,
    Westgarth is the designated enforcer….he even has the perfect #33 for the job….that is, if he earns his way onto the team….if not, then it’s anybody’s guess, or enforcement by committee….
    Clune? Simmonds? Muzzin? [or maybe Kozun can step up....just kidding] where’s Dan Maloney when you need him…

    The guy I went to games with used to say “those guys are crazy” when he mentioned Harper and Maloney

  43. VanKingsFan says:

    He will have to play well in camp but I think Westgarth has a chance in this role. Otherwise I think we go with middleweights; Greene, Simmonds, Clune, Mitchell, Ortmeyer (if we pick him up)?

    [Reply]

    Cry Baby Reply:

    @VanKingsFan, Green should not fight…plain and simple! I love the the fact that he is willing but I cannot recall one that went his way.

    Remember when Jovo KO deadmarsh…Mitchell should not fight either.

    Well since we are going to have a battle for the #1 goal tending spot, we should always dress the tender not in net, and designate him the enforcer… whoever survives the season gets #1 :)

    @GreyPaws, Ha. That just reminded me of our goalie, junior year of high school, who was also a black belt. a bench clearing brawl broke out in the second to last game of the season, and I just remember looking over to see him drop kick some dude, full pads and skates. Laid him straight out.

    Off topic but I just picked up NHL 2011 and it has our lineup from last year with jones, frolov, etc…and poni is still on the penguins and Willie still with the Canucks so I try and trade for them and get rid of all the guys we don’t have anymore and but both teams said they won’t trade away their veterans…what BS haha

    @KH, connect to your internet, my rosters updated an hour after I got the game. Everyone is where they should be. Our Defense is beastly, but I replaced Harrold with Hickey as the 6.

    @KH,

    Yeah, I was at Walmart at midnite with all the other Santa Clarita NHL 11 geeks. One guy dressed in a full hockey uniform. Course, everyone there was half my age. What can I say, I’m a 54 year old King’s fan nut.

    Love the game though. Never did the “be a pro” thing before. Always played “season mode”. Be a pro is great fun, but the view is hard to get used to. In allstar mode I got sent to the AHL despite a decent pre-season with the Kings.

    @KC23, I got NHL ’11 yesterday for the PS3. I did the software update as well as the PS3 update. However, when I start a season mode, it still has last year’s roster. Interestingly enough, I did a play now game against Vancouver and Hamhuis was already on the team. Do I need to do anything specific so the Kings roster gets updated with Mitchell, Poni, etc.?

    @Dan H., I would be so shocked if he did. Would not be good for business either after all that Getz has done for the franchise. It would be like if Simmonds was given a bigger contract than Kopitar next year.

    I’m going to hockeyfest this weekend. During the autograph segments, do they provide pictures or materials to get signed? Or do I need to gather up the player pics I collected throughout last season? Needless to say these aren’t in the best of shape. I’m referring to current roster players only of course. Thanks!!!
